WHAT IS A YAHOO?
Baboons of South Africa Perm Bads
of "Gulliver's Travels."
In the course of his -travels, sthe
eelebralest Gulliver came across a
country where horses were the real
people,
the nearest representatives of
humankind being a most degraded and
bestial race called Yahoos.
Dean 'Swift, who wrote the story,
got his data from what he had learned
of the baboons of South Africa, which
\re great, apes remarkably humanlike.
"ee. travel in bands of two score or
ore usually and 'at night post send-
nelseeehores .may of warning in cede of
dangereis "Yah-hoo, yah-lioo!"
The baboons are undoubtedly re-
mote gousins of our own, but they do
us little credit. Of all animals they
are the ugliest tempered, and no
amount of kindness will ever tame
them or (in captivity) inspire in their
minds the slightest affection for their
keepers.
Nevertheless, they are perhaps the
most intelligent of all beasts—so much
so, indeed, that to kill or capture them
, is exceedingly,.difficult. They fear a
man, but not a -woman. And if the
man is without a gun they will not
run away from him.
Hanging about the neighborhood of
farmsteads and small settlements in
South Africa, they raid the fruit or-
chards and kill the sheep—first dis-
posing of the sheepdogs.' This last is
an easy neater, for not even the most
powerful 'mastiff would have a chance
in combat with a creature such as a
baboon—larger and stronger, with
mighty teeth and four hands to fight
with.
The only effective Way td tackle
baboons is to surround a bunch of
them' at night, wait until daybreak
----iiilently and shoot them down with
rifiea in the morning aNethey emerge
from cover.
Milk, to keep properly, should not
be warmer than 50 degrees- Fahren-
heit.

War.
Moon, moon, what have you seen
The other side of the ,laj?
A blasted land that once .vas green,
Whcte fields and forests die:
Naked hill and plains that shiver
Desperate with their niad: •
A broken valley and a rivet
Bunning deep with blend.
Moon, moon, what of the men
Where rivers thus ran re41
1 saw them fell and fall egaie:
1 could hot count the dead.
OW their souls like hosts of stars
limb the elcyez dark blue hill.
Oh all In vain the other wars
Sinee men are fighting stilil
Moon'moon, why is your look
So pitiful and 'white?
it is because of ono who took
The lonely road to -night:
Who fought like Valor's favorite child,
Who burned the Inc like flame,
And want with Death, unreconciled,
Crying his country's mind
The Angel.
Way over there in France somewhere,
Somewhere beneath God's sky",
While bullets pour and cannons roar,
And glorious banners fly,
Our brave boys fight there day and
night, e
And for their country die.
And over there in France somewhere
Where lies the road to fame,
To glory, immortality,
One day an angel carne,
With soft words on her smiling lips`,
And Kindness VMS her name,
And when our wounded soldiers felt
That angel's gentle touch
Their hearts were filled with grati-
tude,
Their happiness was such
They kissed the very ground sheetrod,
And wept with joy and prayed to God.
And asked: "Are you an angel from
Another universe?"
Then with a sigh she made reply:
"No, I'm a Red Cross Nurse."

Let folks step on your feet here
after; wear shoes a size smaller if you
like, for COMB will never again send
electric sparks of pain through you,
according to this Cincinnati authority.
He says that a few drops of a drug
called freezone, applied 'directly upon
a tender, aching corn, instantly re-
lieves sorehess, and soon the entire
corn, root and all, lifts right out.
This drug dries at once and simply
sluivels up the corn or.eallus without
even irritating the surrounding tissue.
A small bottle of freezone obtained
at any drug store will cost very little
but will positively remove every hard
or soft corn or callus from .one's foot.
If your druggist hasn't stocked this
new drug yet, tell hire to get a email
bottle of freezone for you from his
wholesale drug house.

Lieutenant Ralph Kynoeh, of the
Gordon Tfigillanderli, was Speaking.
He has been at the front S11100 the
war started and has seen fighting In
all its plms. kle was warm in his
praises 0 the deg as mall's eampane
ion in lonely pieces. He merely echo-
ed what every other soldier thinks.
"People Nyho haV en 't been at the
front don't knoW what a littri. com-
panionship means to a man on patrol
duty, or in a dugout, or what a frisky
.pup means to a whole company, Doge
were ever:ter' to be man's compenion,
and I'm blessed if I don't think the
dogs know it better than we do.
"It doesn't seem to matter what
kind of dog it is, You'll find highly
bred animals at .the front and you'll
find doge that wouldn't be admitted
to any self-respecting dog show when
it comes to looks, but for loyalty and
devotion the thoroughbreds don't out-
class the mongreles They all seem
to have the same spirit. The dogs
know the clangers of the trenchea.
Some of the mascots have been there
since the war started. They have seen
hundieds of men killed and have seen
other dogs stretched out by shell fire.
'The pups know when a barrage is
on where they can find safety, and
they go there, unless the man they
look to rts master is going somewhere
else. Trust the dog to stick hard bY,
no matter whether it is in the danger
zone or not.,
"They hang around till doomsday if
they are allowed to do so. And when
the master is killed the dog still sticks
around, and sometimes it is a long,
long time before he picks up with
some one else.
"Take it from one who know, the
life of a soldier would be far more
lonely if it were not for the dogs. And
other animals are worth having, too.
Some of the boys train birds and
chickens and even rats. The laddie
who's got a fine Airedale or a Scotch
terrier is the happiest soldier on the
line, though."

ONE BRITISH WARRIOR.
N..
Winning the War Depends on the Co-
operation 0 the Stay -at -Homes.
In a bus the other day I saw a wea-
ther-beaten soldier who' Will have a
great deal to tell his children and
grandchildren some day if he comes
through the -war, says a London writ-
. er. He lumbered into the bus with
his steel helmet hanging over his
shoulder, his boots spattered with mud
and clad hi the full regalia of the
trenches. He was \veering the rib-
bons of the D.C.M., M.M., Mons Star,
French Croix do Guerre, Russian St.
George's ()roes, Sudan of 1898, South
African (Queen's and King's) the 'Na-
tal Rebellion and the long service
rnedal.
On his left arm wee the wound
stripe 'and upon the right one red and
three blue service chevrons. Nearly
every one in the bus arose as he step-
ped in, but he remained standing.
Everyone wanted to speak to him'but
he didn't encourage conversation. Fin-
ally an: elderly man, in the most con-
descending way, said: •
"I guess you've been where the
fighting has been pretty hot."
"Yes," said the warrior, politely.
"You've been through other wars
"Yee." (Again politely.)
"We're going to win this war, aren't
we?" (Afeer a pause,)
"It the people at home keep as stiff
an upper Hp as the fellows over in
Faience do, we'll win."
That was about all.

QUAL DUST AS FUEL,
Problem to Find a Substitute to Hold
Particles Together.
A large part of the output of any
coal mine is mere dust, or "aleck,"
which formerly was thrown away as
worthless,But within the last very
few years it has been discovered that
this dust, when mixed with a suitable
"binder" and molded into briquettes,
becomes an even better fuel than lump
coal. Already it' is being largely used
in' such shape by manufacturing ins
dustries and for running locomotives.
The main difficulty was to find n
sticky substance that would hold the
particles of coal dust together --some-
thing cheap, that would not leak out
and that would make briquettes proof
against time and weather, resisting
wet and temperature, high or low.
To meet these requirements was a
matter of no little difficulty. Among
the many things tried were refuse
molasses, quicklime, acid sludge (a
waste of petroleum refineries) and
resin.
Coal -tar pitch and asphaltic pitch
have proved satisfactory for the pur-
pose—the former being a by-product
of the distillation 0 coal -tar, while
the latter is derived by similar pro-
cess frozn heavy asphaltic oils. But
as yet the whole business of coal bri-
quetting is in an experithental stage,
the shapes into which the briquettes
are molded Tieing as various as the
binders employed in 'thehe manufac-
ture. •
