E

'Phil first reunion of the Huron Co.
boys will be held in. Clinton on Satur-
day, Victoria Day, after an absence of
over four years and The New Era, wel-
eontes them to Clinton, Few indeed
will their be of the men who left. in
August 1914 for Valcartier from Huron
County, who will celebrate the reunion
on Saturday. The roll of "originals"
is pttifully sad, but not all were buried
where "popies blow In Flanders Fields."
:Malty of them have been wounded so
severely that further participation in
the great struggle was hot for them,
had preceded their comrads home and
will be Isere to welcome the late ar-
rivals, back to Huron once again.
There will be sad eyes as many a
mother watches the parade and sees
not her son among the ranks and
realizes to an even keener degree the
loss which she has sustained, But there
there will also be glad eyes -those of
the loved ones at house who, for per-
iods extending in some cases to nearly
sive years, have watched every mail and
every telegram, in fear lest the mes-
sage should be an ill-omened one. That
tin'e has passed, all hope, forever, and
.:n:e again the stalwart welcomed to
h: mother's bosom. 'There were
r.:,n•; such reunions during the last
slut
It is to be regretted that it is not
i l for the battalion to parade here
n ic.,l enttoply of war. as a netting unit
Cann. Such a
}Ito::: ._,r =,ne to have
' a ..r, d forever. But the hours
se'par;ati"n from their kicdred were
enough for the soldier and fight -
has lost its charm, and the boys
:le.:ire t:, depart as speedily as possible
from military life can be well under-
stood. Canada's fighting forces,- and
they were second to none in the Empire
-,were civilian in their heart, and mili-
tary glory was not their ambition. To
be home once again has for meny
months been the desire of many, since
the Hun resistance was broken by the
smashing British advances its August,
19.16', in which the Canadians were not
the least effective.
The citizens of Clinton and Huron
throw open their arms, their hearts to
the gallant fighters who went out from
this County one and all they offered
their all for their country.
"For how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his gods."
They fought and won. They crush-
ed German military might, and to those
who survive today is paid the honor of
their triumph. Let silent prayers be
said for those who will not return,
having paid the great sacrifice that all
might be free. Our heritage Is a. great
one, They died to preserve it. Let
Canada be found worthy of such sac-
rifice.
The boys from Huron County have
distinguished themselves, winning de-
corations and promotions which will
forever rank high in the annals of the
'Canadian army in the great ,conlIict of
1914-1918.
"It's only a small piece or bunting,
It's only an old colored rag,
But it stands for freedom and right,
boys,
And thousands had died for the flag."
