Miss Margaret Davies visited Sea - forth friends last week, Mr. J. J. Merrier, M. •P. of Seaforth was in town on Friday. Mr. Jacob Taylor of Toronto has been in'town during the past week. Mr, W. F. Cantelon of Toronto was in town a couple of days this week. Mrs. Thompson of St. Marys is vis- iting her son, Dr. C. W. Thomp- son. Miss Bessie Grimm of Winnipeg is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. D. Cant- elon. Mr. C. H. Holland is in Ottawa this week attenring a conference of in- spectors. Mrs. D. A. Cantelon of Hensall was in town a couple of days the end of the week. Mr. Erskine Evans of the Toronto University returns home today for the Christmas holidays, Messrs. 'D. A. and J. H. Cantelon of HensaIl attended the funeral of Lieut. Cantelon on Monday. Mrs, Rath of Detroit, Mich., who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. D. MacDonald, has returned home. Mrs. J. E. Brooks of Mitchell has been in town this week visiting her paents, Mr, and Mrs. Wm. Cantelon, Mr. Alvin Leonard of the Toronto University is expected home today and will spend his. vacation at his home on the sixteenth. Mrs. T. Jackson returned from Toron- to on Saturday accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Greig; who has spent the past few months in the city. Mrs. J. E. Holmes and Miss Agnes are spending the holiday season as the guests of the former's par- ents; Mr. and Mrs. W. Doherty. Mr. W. .H. Newcombe of Vancouver; 13. C., who has been on a business trip east, has been visiting his sis- ter, Mrs, J. S. Evans, during the past week. Messrs. E. Fleetly and W. E. Floody of Toronto came up on Monday morning to attend the funeral of the late Lieut. H. Ray Cantelon, which took place on Monday after - neon. Mrs. W. III. Pickett and fancily and her brother, the Rev. J. H. Col- elough of Dutton, visited last week with their mother, Mrs. Ann- ie Colelough, who recently moved into town and is getting nicely settled. Mr. Ernest E. Hall is holidaying at his home in town, The Universal Car .Agency, Windsor, in the office of which he had been employed, hav- ing had to close clown part of their plant for a few weeks owing to scarcity of coal. Mrs. Johnson and her daughter and Miss McLean of Goderich and Miss Irene Brooks of Mitchell were in town on Friday, having come to attend the funeral of Lieut. Ray Cantelon, which was announced to take, place that afternoo>}. Mr. Roy East, who went to Siberia a little over a year. ago to estab- lish a branch of the Royal Bank, returned to Canada a couple of weeks. ago. It was deemed unwise to establish a banking 'institution there owing to the unsettled state of affairs all over Russia and he was recalled, Mr. , East will probably visit Clinton relatives early in the new year. Mr. S. Eagleson of Milton, North Dakota, who has been visiting his parents, Mr: and Mrs. Win .Eagle- son of Bayfield during the, past feta weeks, called on friends in Clinton on Saturday, The News -Record among the number. "I've been taking this paper for over thirty years," he remarked as 'he renewed his subscription. "We wouldn't like to be without it at our house." Mr. Eagleson makes a trip bask to the old home country every three or four ,yarn and is always heartily welcomed by his old friends. THE PASSING OF`CAPT. ,(REV.) JOSEPH ELLIOTT A well-known citizen of Huron county (lied at St. Andrew's Military Hospital, Toronto, an Friday last in the person of Capt. (Rev.) Joseph Elliott, formerly of Goderich. Soon after the declaration of ,war Mr, Elliott volunteered for the Chap- liin Service and did good service•, with the Canadian troops both in England and Prance, He returned to Canada several months ago in very poor health and hi spite of the best Icare and treatment his strength eon. tinned to fail. Next Royal Bank township, near Bayfield, and entered the ministry after graduating from Knox College and for soine years had charge of the church at Nairn. Ow- ing to a weakness of the threat he was obliged to give up preaching, though considered a powerful preach- er, and he took up his residence in Goderich. His -teas too active a na- ture to allow of him sitting down with folded hands, however and he be- gan to,take an ,interest in municipal and religious and political affairs. In 1907 he was mayor of Goderich and in 1911. he contested the riding for the Legislature in the Conservative interests. IIe is survived by his wife and one son, Lieut, John Elliott, who served with the Imperial Artillery Forces and who is supposed to be on his way home at present. He is also survived by four brothers, Dr. Elliott of Luck - now, Arthur Elliott of Bayfield and Thomas on the homestead, John Ell- iott of Goderich and one sister, Mrs. John Fraser of Bayfield.
