"At present prinvs evaegg should .eontaill a chiokoa,"--Toronto Globv, Sawpf tie do and thenpeople L •don't $eem to be any too well pleased. All the papers tel is to "Do our Cltristmos shopping early" but none of 'en so far have added. the necess- ary information its to where to find the many or the merchant who will give m1i nitecl credit -and Christmas is but faux weeks away, The vailways bane been.. experts meeting with (lard coal, owing to the scarcity of soft, and find it unsatis- factory. Those of us who havebeen burning soft coal for the past two or three years, owing to the scarcity of herd, would gladly swap with them, • ton for ton, they to do, the hauling. In Toronto this week a great gatb- • ering was held, a gathering the most significant ever held on this eontin- ent, perhaps in the world, the inaug- nration of a great Dominion -wide, Inter-Ohurcb • movement, five Prot- •estant denominations being repre- sented. A movement for the deepen- ing of spiritual life among the people -at homend a an extension of a+or•]c -amongst the people of non-Christian lands. It is encouraging to see the leaders in the several denominations laying aside all matters on which 'they differ and uniting in a great for- areard movement fn matters on which they agree. It is encouraging and nspiring and the result should be far-reaching and beneficial. "It is most unjust the way man- s ufactdrersand dealers unite to blame the high cost of shoes on women," remarked a women of our acquaint- - ance the other clay. "We are told -that we demand high-priced c •' c the e hrgl paced shoe :and will buy no other. I would like -to see any other kind. Most of us -do like a good shoe but who wants to pay the present prices?" "'Wom- en do not make the shoe styles," re- marked another women. "I don't ..care what tnanugaeturers say. The manufacturers make the styles, change them as often as they think -they can -muskeg profit at it and ad- vertise thein for all they're worth. Women are usually silly enough to :allow this to go on without much protest but it is time they did make •a protest. Last spring," she contin- ued, "when I wanted a pair of shoes I was obliged to take a pair with -the long vamp, which I did not like, .because the dealer assured me be had no other kind. `There's noth- ing -else being worn now: he said, 'It is the only style of shoe I have an stock. What is a women to do Seeder such circumstances? She --01010e can't make her own shoes, nor can she go barefoot as a protest. The great majority of women want a good looking, well -made shoe at a .fair price, just as the great major- ity of men do. It ought to be pos- sible to supply thein. But the man- ufacturers have taken advantage, l there can bo no doubt of it, of wom- en's -liking for something new ill .shoes as in other things, and have made them pay the piper. If -wore- -en are waking up to the fact there may be a change. 1 Births MOLE -In Seaforth, on Nov. 14th, to Mr, and Mrs. Edward Mole, a daughter. IZ7.ARU Mrs, Eliza teasel, widow of the late Joseph tz• as, at p t 1 u ci of Goderi0h town- ship, passed away at the home of her eldest daughter, Mrs, William Grum- :nette of TU lc ' rl l.'1 ala t ti 0111 I'l dfl Y last after a short illness. IVIts, Ieza •til whose maiden name was Eliza Wigginton, was born in Mayfield, Chinguacousy township, Peel County, in July 1844 and moved ,with her family -to Goderich Own - ship when but eleven years of age, travelling all the way- by wagon, the only means of transportation in those days. The family settled on a farm on the Bayfield Road and in 1803 the subieet of this sketch became the wife of Joseph Izzard, Shortly' afterwards they settled on the 14th concession, where she. lived until af- ter the death of her husband in 1917. She is survived by three- sons and fiyc daughters: Albert E. and Erneet W. Izzard, Montreal, Que., Percy Izzard, Mrs. (Dr.) Fowler and Miss Eliza Izzard, Toronto; Mrs. M. The services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. McLean of Egmondville. CENTRAL HEATING SYSTEM FOR CLINTON Editor News -Record Dear Sir: -Permit a little space in your paper to make a suggestion to the Town of Clinton, as I would like to hear the opinion of some of the other citizens and our Town Fathers on the subject of fuel shortage, Now, I would suggestthat a large steam heating system be installed. Con- sidering the fact that the Jadk"son Mfg. Co. is situated in the centre of the Town and has steam on all the time, could not. this firm be in- duced to supply steam to all the stores and resident's and churches in that part of the Town? If a steam heating system in a house will heat the house with foul. or five lbs. pres- sure how many large buildings would 100 lbs. steam pressure heat, with very little coal? Hoping that the Town Fathers will enquire into the cost of such a system and get in touch with our business Wren and see what can be done. Thanking you for this space in your paper, I remain, Yours Sin- cerely. -=A Citizen. THE BEST CHRISTMAS PRES- ENT AT ANY PRICE.
