17 September 13th 1919 Qliptop News -Record Of Interest to:You and Me The Toronto Tihnes, sueoessor ie'( dile News, ceased publication on .Saturday last. The reason given was the hicreesed cost,of production, •..r Not an arrest .was made at the ';Toronto exhibition this year for ie - .Sobriety and not an infraction of the Ontario temperance act, was report- ,ed, notwithstandiug the fact that stile fair was attended by nearly one million and,a midrter people -Toren - :to Star, • e • S,S. No. 15 , Southwold township .has been unable to' re -open school since the vacation owing to 'the fact •rthat the teaches cannot obtain a 'boarding house. Time was Nhcn • it was considered a mark of distin'c'tion • .in the neighborhood for a family 1.o .have tho "school-marm" to board. The terrillie heat of Sunday came :so suddenly and unexpectedly that women of fashion, poor things. had :hardly time to get out their furs. Don't imagine that the trials of life. .are the exclusive burden or the poor: -•Orillia Packet. Isn't the Packet editor the tier •.eastic old thing ? There are nine 'students in Oriliia Model ,school, same number as last year. At that it is better than Clinton, which only has This is _probably the last year we. shall 'have, a Model school here•. The in- creased prosperity of the people may have something to do with the 'fall- ving off in Model school attendance. Students take the longer Normal • training and secure a permanent car- tifioate more often than they used to do, it not being so necessary to 'work their way through. • •. • After the signing of the Armistice `Mast year there was a movement on '•foot to have the date of the signing, November 11th, set apart as a per- ,petual thanksgiving day in Canada, Now there seems to be an agitation 'to have the second Monday in Nov- ember thus set apart. The idea of a fixed date does• not appeal as it •means.that, the holiday moves along through the week, 'this year the lith ..occurring on Tuesday. As Thanks- ' giving Day has been observed in Can- ada for a good many years- we see •no particular need for it at all, ex- cept as a holiday from daily toil. Since it has been, held - on Monday -the day has been observeo as a play- • day merely, not at all as a day of 4010 Thanksgiving to God for the bless- . dogs of the harvest, the original oh- ject of the day, Perhaps now, in view of the fact that we have some- thing definite to be thankful for and the date brings it to mind, we may -observe Thanksgiving Day more as a -religious day than as a holiday. It ought to be fully understood that a vote to repeal the Ontario Temperance Act will bring into ef- .ffect the Ontario License Act and ,all that that implies, no matter how the other questions on. the - ballot .are answered. The Premier was very implicit regarding this. "In that event," said Sir William .Hearst when explaining the. Act in the House on April 7th last, "there • would be no necessity for further •consideration of the answers to the -other questions, for the greater would include the less, and liquor -would be sold in tars and shops as in years gone by." If the Act is repealed .Ontario goes 'back to license and all kinds of ;liquor, both bard and soft, may be sold over the bar -as before, except in those municipalities stilt under the Canada Temperance Act, Anyone 'who endeavors to prove, otherwise is misrepresenting .the ease. Altogether 'new legislation would have to be en - :acted before any curtailment would lie, possible. The only way td en- sure against the geturn of the bar is to vote "No" in the first question •.on the Referendum, ballot. !Marking the ;Ballot 1Vlistakes are sometimes)- Made in ••what seems to be a simple matter,. Tho marking of the ballot, -the vot- 'ing sign is an X, and the Toter must put no other mark upon the , ballot than the voting sign, The official in- structions in connection with the Tempereece Referendum Act road as "follows The voter shall go into one of the c- compartments, and with a blacklead ;pencil there provided, place a cross jopPosite each question, •under the `titles "YES or "NO," thus X. The voter must vote "YES" • or "`NO" on every one of the said ques- tions, otherwise his entire ballot will be void. . If'the voter does not vote on ev •ery one of the ,said questions, or if the places any mark on the ballot ',paper by which he •can be identified, :his vote will be void and will .not be ,counted. It is to avoid the possibility of identifying the ballot that the re- .quirement is laid down that only the 'voting sign shall be used. It wilt be :readily seen that to allow varying marks would he to make itossiblo identification mid thus destroy . to some extent the secrecy of the bal- lot and opetrthe door for corrupt practice, There roust therefore be no writing, letter or rnark of any kind other than the voting sign • up- on the ballot, and this mark, a sim- ple X, must be so placed as to clear-. ty indicate the intention of the voter, 'limo Three.
