'The whole Empire is celebrating, • • • It is all right to keep young it you 'don't carry it too 'far and get child- ish, • • Wo are now .at liberty to gado with Germany. But Who wants to trade with Germany ? We've had enough to do with Germany during the past five years to satisfy this ;generation, • Councillor Langford had some dif- ficulty in reading his report at the last council meeting. "Who wrote that report'?" asked a brother al- derman. "I wrote it myself," an- swered Oouncthlor. Langford. Whore -upon the reporters were seen to smile :sympathetically, They had • been In the same place themselves, • • We thought we were through witli the Daylight Saving scheme, the two houses in the ' United Stales voting, against the bilk tits But we and y, 'it appears, reckoned' without Presi- dent Wilson, who vetoed the vote and would not have the bill thrown out. 'Woodrow seems to be a masterful. :sort of a man and our Irish rebels when we think we may have to rise -an hour earlier next summer just': :because he says so. ' • • The Zurich Herald, which has en- tered upon) its •liwelfth year, • has :adopted the motto : "Boost the Home Town ; Spend Every Dollar at Horne." It seems to be living up 'to the first part of the motto all -right and,we do not doubt at all but the last part as well.. There is nothing which helps a town so much as a live newspaper and no enter - prize which should receive more 'hearty support from the citizens. Some towns realize this and some •do not. We wish our plucky little 'southern neighbor continued and in- - .creased success. • • • "Let the tariff, with all its in - 'directions, go hang until we deal directly with the question of 'who will pay for the war," says Peter McArthur. And, while we do not by -any means always agree with the genial Peter, we agree with him to -tile extent of believing that the tar- ift question is being allowed to ab- sorb', too much public interest at the present time while other equally im- portant matters are being neglected. "There are as many opinions about the Urfa as there are people eager to express ttuent and go Mr, MQArtime admits Concerning his owir opinions; most people are not sure, "whether they were inherited o>a rrited af - ter careful consideration early in life," • • • Canadian girls need nob feel disc f ctt t so.of courage(' by bhC a that the soldier boys, lolmd wives `over there." According to the , Canadiltn Year Book for 1918 the .male popula- tion of Canada, is over 400,009 more than the female, or for every 1,000 females there aro over 1,125 ' males. The:disparity is especially marked in the Western provinces, The last ten. sus showed that the number of re - males per 1,000 tnales, for each, Prov - lace was ; British Columbia, 489 ; Manitoba, 622 ; Alberta, 6?3 ; Sas- katchewan, 038 ; Ontario, 942 ; , New. Brunswick, 950 ; Nova Scotia, .961 ; Quebec, , 930, and Prince Edward Is- .Jand, 901, -Stratford Daily Herald.. "Oh, that's all very well" remark- ed a young lady of our acquaintance. "But I'd like to know where they keep themselves. Besides no girl likes to be reduce.(' to a single choice." The girls can't see to help feed in g somewhat aggrieved no matter what excuses are:olfered. • • • At the council meeting on Monday evening it was decided, all council- lors voting yea with the exception ul Mayon Cooper and Councillors Car- ter and 111cMurray,, that, a license should be given A. Snazel of Goder- icli to place bili boards in town, un- der the direction of the council. Several disfiguring billboards have been discarded and it is up to the council, which according to the wording of the motion has full 'con- trol of the natter, to see that oth- ers as objectionable are not foisted upon the town. There are two or three here now which cannot reason- ably be objected to, except that a billboard cannot in the nature ot things be as pleasing to the eye as a green lawn or a flowering shrub, and we have at least one place in mind where a neatly erected billboard might be an improvement. But, as we said before, it is up to the coun- cil to see that billboards are not al- lowed to spoil the beauty of our town. The members will be held ac- countable if that happens.
