A paragraph In a London paper an
rounces the Hlness of tile Marquis of

that it is serious. •

resulted in the Supercession of the Bul-

cently his unpopular Attempt to pro-

the late war, he has been re the nubile

it has yet to be revealed,' when priv-

history of our own times, in days to
con e, if Lord Lansdowne was acting
from conviction ct on or only, as has been al-
leged, sacrificing himself and playing
the part of a tester on public opinion.
Be it as it may, Canadians have some
acquaintance with the Marquess, ac-
quired during -the time tie was Gover-

astute statesman, Sir John Macdonald

recorded in Itis biography by Pope; that
the sante_tdme Viceroy "was the ablest
Governor-General he had "served under,
with the exception, perhaps, of Lord
Lisgar." The latter'was in office dur-
ing the'clifftcult period when Confeder-
ation was debated and accomplished—
certainly a period calling for statesman-
ship of a high and far-seeing order.
Lord Lansdowne was not a popular
Governor in the vulgar sense, nor as.
silver-tongued as Lord Dufferin, nor of
the stately sol faineant type like Lord
Ltorne, nor of the fussy type of Lord
Aberdeen, but he was eminently prect-
ical, and, doubtless, fortified Stu. John's
opinion, else, assuredly, it would not
have been expressed. The writer'sativ
