The deceased had been ill for several

Exeter. -The autotnobile. of Const-
able Fellow of Goderich while standing
in Mr. W, A, Balkwnll's barn on Thurs
day afternoon last caught fire, from
what is supposed to have been a short
circuit. Smoke issuing from the build-
ing was noticed and the fire extinguish
ed before much damage could be done.
Wingham.-The date for Winghain
races has been definitely set for Aug-
ust lith and 12th. The. purse $2,400,-
000 is an enticing one and should draw
a good line -of race horses to Wingham.
On Wednesday afternoon the first day
the classes Will be a 2.50 trot or pace
a 2,30 trot or pace and aa.24 trot, 'On
the afternoon of the second day there
will be a free for all a 2.18 trot or
pace and a 2.22 trot or pace. The purse

er of Loedesboro, Huron County has
forwarded a stalk of sweet clover 9ft by
8% ins. long. He has not informed as
how he excavated the young tree,
but from all appearances it looks as if
he had used a stump puller, 'It is a tre-
mendous stalk and will take some beat-
ing. .
If there is not a big crop of coons
in Huron County this fall it will not
be for lack of corn. A sample of corn
has been received from Mr. W. J, Mc-
Cullie of Kippen, sown on the 24th
of May and measuring now 6ft 4, in.

Sketches of the New Federal
Ministers.
Hon, Fleming Blanchard McCurdy,
the new Minister of Public Works, is a
financier by occupation. He is 45 years
of age and a native of Colchester Coun
ty N. S. which he represents in Portia
mens. He has been a member of the
House of Commons since 5911, He has
served as parliamentary secretary and
the Department of Soldiers Civil Rees-'
tablishment and as chairman of the
Invalided Soldiers Comnmission,
Hon, Rupert Wilson Wigmore Minist
er of Customs has had a short parlia-
mentary career. He was elected to the'
'Comtnons by a large ihojefi t 'in St,
John City and County in 1917.-
Prior
to that he had municipal experience and
gained considerable popularity in his
native city by his service as cbmmiss
loner of Water and Sewerage. Heis en-
gaged in business to St. John and is 47
years of age. -
Hon. Edgar Keith Spinney` is a pro
ininent business man in Yarmouth N. S.
He was president of 'the Liberal Associa
tion of Yarmouth when he was select-
ed as Liberal -Unionist candidate in Yar
mouth and Clare in 1917 and was elect-
ed Co the House of Commons. He has
given the Union Government consist-
ent support since his election. He Is
69 years of age, Mr. Spinney has never
beep ambitious for politica! advance-
ment, He entered Parliament because
he desired that the Liberals of Yar-
mouth should be represented in the fol-
lowing of the Union Government. He
joined'the Cabinet because he felt that
the Liberals of No Scotia should be -
represented •in the Government. He
consulted his friends in Ottawa before
accepting appointment to the Privy
Council and endeavored to consult Pre
mier G. H. Murray of Nova Scotia, and
the Liberal and Conservative organizat-
ions of his riding by wire, Receiving
no reply from Nova Scotia he 'decided
to accept a place in the Ministry with
out portfolio, As for Mr. Spinney will
receive no salary as a member of the
Government he will not have to seek
re-election.

coal continues to come into Ontario et
the present rate, and if a reasonable

RAILROADS ARE CU -OPERATING
The Ontario coal dealers and the
'Canadian railroads are co-operating
with the American authorities to ren-
der the operation of this order effect-
ive. This order has made possible
'such increased coal shipments into Ont
ario that Mr. Harrington and the Cana-
dian authorities decided to ask for an
extension of the time during which it
was to be in force, and have succeeded
in having the time extended to 30
days,
DOMINION TO ACT
Ottawa, Ont., July t5, -It is ex-
pected 'here that the Board of Railway
Commissioneers will today promulgate
orders looking toward the conservation
and supplementing of coal supplies for
Canada and central Canada in particul-
ar, This prohibition of exports from
Eastern Canada, excepting • to the
United States and Newfoundland is in
contemplation,
The board is also considering the
prohibition of the bunkering at any
Atlantic port excepting Sydney, of
steamships crossing the Atlantic with
the exception of passenger steamships.
By the above regulations it is anti-
cipated that some 50,000 tons of bitu-
minous coal per month will be brought
from Nova Scotia to Montreal and St.
Lawrence points, It is also anticipated
that large quantities of American coal
now used for bunkering at Montreal
will be released for domestic and in-
dustrial purposes,
The Board of Railway Commnission-
•ers was vested with the function of
fuel control last session. In the United
States the Interstate Commerce Com-
mission -has • control -and has •in addit-
ion to prohibiting exports from At-
lantic points to Europe established a
strict system of, priorities;
