street. Mayor Cottle stated that at Com-

the 12 barrels at once,

Hon, Arthur Meighen, K. C„ B. A,
M. P. was born at Anderson, Perth
County, June 16, 1874 son of Joseph
Meighen. He was educated et St, Marys
'Collegiate Institute and Toronto Univer.
sity. In 1897.8 he taught high school at
Cal•endonla Ont; in the latter year he re

to Portage La Prairie, where he still
makes his home. His wife was Miss
Jessie Cox., of Birtie, Man,
He was called to the Manitoba -bar in
1903, and the following year became
partner in the firm of Meighen & Mc-
Pherson. He was elected to the Hpuse of
.Conitnons for Portage La Prairie in 19-
08 and re-elected in 1911 and 1917, He
was appointed solicitor -general in 1913.
He became secretary of state for Can-
ada and minister of mines on August 28
1917 and was sworn in as minister of
the interior and superintendent gen-

Hon. Arthur Meighen will be the first
Western man to take over the chief ex-
ecutive of Canada, While he is a native
of Ontario, Mr. Meighen has spent
practically his whole life in the West.
Mr. Meighen was the man who went
with Sir Robert Borden to England in
1917 to attend the imperial conference.
He is a barrister by profession having
graduated from 'Toronto University in
1896. lie is also remembered as the
man who fathered the compulsory Mil-
itary Service Act and carried it through
the House of Commons in 1917,

Reeve Miller brought up the quest-
ion of the Pool roost bylaw which was
referred to last meeting by Rev. Mr.
Porde and asked what the Council was
going to do.
Clerk Mcpherson got the bylaw ,841d
read it for the information, of Ate
Couvcil.
Councillor Wiltse thought the by-
law should be changed so that the
Council be.given the power to grant lic-
enses instead of Mayor or the Chief of
Police.
Reeve !hiller moved and Councilor
W,iltse seeonde4 that By-law Licensing
Pools Rooms be recinded and a bylaw
be prepaned to give Council the whole
power in licensing, was withdrawn af-
ter some discussion.

Tien bylaw No 5 1887 be attended by
adding the words after the word ,Mayor
"with the consent of the Council."
A vote was taken which was a tie and
.the Mayor voted for the motion.

The 23rd annual convention of the
Huron County W. C. T. U, Was held in
Wesley church, Clinton on 'Tuesday
afternoon and Wednesday morning.
The largest attendance of deiegates was
at the convention and an enjoyable anid
helpful sessions were held.

town for a short time thismorning fol-
lowing his return yesterday noon from
a rather lenthy stay in New York City,
where Ile underwent an operation some
weeks ago. Me, Ferguson tvas accompan-
ied by Mrs, Ferguson and stood the
long trip very well and is cheerful and
glad to be once more in Stratford, Mr.
Ferguson's operation was quite success
NI and the doctors anticipate a full re-
covery, though for a time he will have
to abstain from bttsiness attd other ac-
tivities. „-
Among the numbers were solos by Miss
Lilian Jackson, Blyth; Miss Addie Ta-
man, Blyth; Master George Beavers,
Exeter. Recitations by Miss Melda Mc-
Elroy and Miss Madeline Stotliers, of
Blyth avid a violin solo by Miss Lillan
Jackson, all of which were much ap-
preciated and enjoyed by the large
audience.
The speaker of the evening was Miss
K. Mortal who inspired all by her
splendid address on "Sacrifice and Ser-
vice" with regard -to the coming ea-
ferendum and the future welfare of our
country. •
The morning session' on Wednesday
including the election of officers, eons=

ions in the history of the organization,
