"I understand not. Be Is simply put-

It seemed so good to Ruth,,efter e
sick spell of three months, to feel that
she was going to get well, that She did
not one bit mind the announcement of
Doctor Doane that the convalescence
meant absolute quiet for a few weeka.
Ruth had a pleasant room, with a
double window, and from her couch
she could look out upon the gimlet"
and beyond it. She had been interest-
ed for several days in watching ma-
sons put in a cellar of concrete blocks
on ' the, next lot.' Then that day. a
young man had appeared, directing
the operations of .some carpenters. It
was pleasant occupation of mind for
Ruth to see the framework go up piece
by piece. So constantly was the
young man she now knew to be Mor-.
ton 1ia11 in her sight 'that she felt as
if they were almost acquainted.
Ruh noted ted that her young brother,
Ned, had invaded the next yard. Mr.
Hall had Ret some boards so as to coop
in the little fellow, had carried a lot
of blocks to the inelosure and visited
Ills guest dbce In e while with kindly
word and smile, encouraging him In
Ms game of playing storekeeper,
"See what I got for you)" cried
Ned, coming home atrclinner time sad
rnshiAtg up to tate sick room.
Ruth beamed. She had counted the
maiden roses running up over an old
trellis on the next 10 had watched
them bloom and Marl expressed a Wish
for a bouquet or them, and here was
Ned with both hands full.
"For mel Oh, Ned1 I hope you
didn't take them without leave, or beg
for them."
"No, I only told Mr. Hall what you
said about them, and he told me to,
take alt I wanted, as they Were going
to take down the trellis,"
dtuth flushed a fairer pink then her
floral treasures. Her convalescence
was certainly proceeding pleasantly.
So engrossed was she day after day
in wetchsig the house construction
progress that she would discuss over
and over this and that phase of its
architecture with her mother and sis-
ter, as thoiigb she had a vital share in
it 1tH. Ned was present one evening
when Ruth made the remark:
"I wonder why Mr. Hall didn't
round the porch at this end? That
would •give him sunlight and the
breeze and a slew in ail four dime-

"Oh, Ned! Yon surely didn't mention
what T aatd 1" cried Rath.
"Yee, I'd, and Mr. Hell said he was
so glad you did, for at fiat makes .
things so much nicer.
The day came when the doctor aa-
nouneed that Ruth might spend the
pleasantest part of the day la the gar-
den. They wheeled her to the little
summer house that had always been
a,fevorite spot with het, reading and
sewing. Ruth's eyes danced with
pleasure as she found its little table
bearing a good Jar Stied with the
choicest treasures of the garden next
door.
"You see, I told Mr. tial; you was
going .to come outdoors," reported
Ned, Innocently. "Ain't you glad I
rnd, Ruth?"
She was glad end she had an oppor-
tunity to thank this thoughtful neigh-•
bore before the day was over. He ap-
peared wlth half a dozen of the latest '
magazines and a profound apology.
73e owed her so much for her sugges-
tion about the porch! It was so pleas-
ant to know that some one 'besides
himself was interested in the new
house( And before Ruth realized it he
had ndmlred her taste 10 suggesting
how the house should be estated.
After that, as Ruth improved daily
and was able to go about Unaided, the
sincere pleasure flit, Hall evidenced in
