experiments in w:b'aless telegraphy,
that Its invention would play a lead-
ing part in a tremendous war, and
that, immediately after that war's
close; there would be established a
station capable of sendingits invite
ible massages• through Y el rho p

Yet this is slightly lease than -the des-
tanee over which the wonderful La-
fayette Station, at Bordeaux, will be
capable of effectively communicating
under normal conditions.
Throwing Messages Thousands of
Mlles.
At the rresent time, all the great
nationa have powerful wireless plants
etas
in operation. Enghtlnd's leading
st
tion is on the Corrsislr coast, from
Which she can "speak" .to. America
With . ease and certainty. The United
States have a magnificent station at
Annepolis, Maryland, with a radius of
fully six thousand miles. it is under
the control of the U.S. Navy.
France has a station at Lyons which
can send messages only a slightly less
distance, and the Germans and the
Scandinavian peoples have also very
complete and effective radio services
"Wireless" has come to be an eseen
tial part of every nation's commercial
and political life.
The story of the new Lafayette Ste
tion is, in part, a story of the Great
War. During the time that the Ger
man submarine campaign was at its
ghastly height, Great Britain, France
and the :United Slates joined counsel
for the purpose of improving the
Transatlantic radio services, primarily
for fear, that the Huns might devise
some method of outing the cables and
.so isolating -her three great enemies
from one another.
How the Great Station Was Sorn.
While Britain was as much interest
ed as France and America,in the pro
posais towards this end, it was prac
tically left to France and the United
States to get on with the job. Ulti
mately, it was agreed that the• French
Government should give a plot of laud
at Bordeaux for the purpose of erect
ing a new and altogether stronger
wireless installation than had hither
to been deemed practicable,
France's part of the bargain was
that she should find the ground a
Bordeaux, properly protect it, at up
buildings, guarantee a water supply
and power facilities, and make' the
of Control, which las been in Vilna, ( foundations. On her part, the States
where a provisional government was
established after its recent seizure -by.
troops under command of the insur-
gent General Zellgouski, has arrived
in Warsaw. '
The Commission went to Vilna to
obtain statements from the prevision-
al government there of its side of the
case. Its visit to Warsaw is for the
purpose of conferring with President
Pilsudski, -Premier Witos, Foreign
Minister Sapieha and others, in an at-
tempt to Peach a solution of the prob-
lem caused by the seizure of the city
from the Lithuanians,
The commission also is continuing
consideration of the Polish -Lithuan-
ian- territorial dispute. At Vilna the
league emissaries heard the support-
ers of the new state, listening to Gen-
• eral Zeligouski and others. While the
conference was hi progyese there was
a demonstration outside the building
that caused alarm until it was learned
the crowd wished to display its
'friendliness both to General Zellgou-
ski and the members of the commis-
sion.

Poland is. preparing to turn the
energies of war to peaceful missions
as soon as possible, and plans already,
are under way for demobilization 01
the army, which has been in the field
seghting the Russian Soviet forces
neatly two years, says a Warsaw des-
patch.
Throughout the country the press
optimistically predicts a quick trans-
formation of the country from a war-
ring nation to a land of freedom and
prosperity. Premier Vincent Witos,
who rose to leadership of the Peas-
ants' party from a poor Galician wood-
chopper, is most hopeful regarding the
future of 'Poland.
"Poland needs peaceful develop-
ment to heal the wounds of war and
Pave the way for reconstruction of the
country," the Premier declared in a
recent speech. "Therefore, the gov-
ernment will direct itself entirely to.
weed improving economic and social
conditions.
Economic Situation Not Desperate.
"I have just returned from a trip
through. the state. The present eco-
nomic situation is difficult, but not
desperate."
Premier Witos said he expected sig-
nature of the final peace treaty with-
in a few weeks unless the Soviets
make some difficulties, but declared he
did not look for such action. The
peace preliminaries, M. Witos con-
tinued, were not entirely satisfactory
to 'Polish aspirations, as a great num-
ber of Poles were left outriide the
Polish frontiers, yet they satisfy Po-
land's spirit of moderation and her de-
sire to end the war, while giving Po-
land free breathing space in the East.

At first there will be some difficulty
in this connection, but the French
Government have decided to equip all
their receiving operators. throughout
the world with mechanical apP
,rat
s
which will make phonggraphic records
of incoming massages. These can af-
terwards be "played" over slowly, and
transcribed, moie or less, at ease.
Just iinagdne what all this will
mean! You hand lh a message—a
commercial transaction or query to a
business house in San Francisco, or
Ohina, or a birthday greeting to a
friend in one of the Pacific Islands—
at a London post office, marking it
"via Bordeaux."
It Is at once wirelessed to the
French town. There it is stamped out
on a dot -and -dash machine, .run
through another machine, to "escape"
through the antennae at the topof
the 820 -feet -high towers into space.
Thousands and thousands;of.miles
away the dote and dashes are instant-
ly being received into a ort of gramo-
phone; to be afterwards "played over
at any speed desired, and in a short
time, thereafter your business friend
or your relation receives the printed
message at his desk or in his home!
Wonders will never cease!
An agreement was recently made
between the French -and American
Governments for the purchase of the
entire Lafayette Station by the form-
er nation, so that France now possess-
es the greatest and most wonderful
of all the wireless stations in the
world.

Some of the newspaper criticisms
of the League of Nations have been
more severe than usual. The league's

This is What Thousands of
People Throughout the
Country Are Doing.
Thousands of Canadian housewives
are working from day to day on their
nerve. They are daily drawing more
and more on their reserve strength,
knowing full well that they are using
up that vital force which often means
life or death in the crisis. of disease.
They are the victims of a feeling of
hopeless exhaustion after the per-
formance of even the small tasks,
which were once the simplest and
easiest parts of the day's work. They
find the ,appetite failing, sleep is dis-
turbed and unrefreshing; they lose
weight, and always. feel tired and de-
pressed. In this condition a blood-
building tonic is needed to restore
health and activity, and fdr this pur-
pose Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are un-
surpassed. Often the trouble will have
progressed to a point which makes
full recovery slow, -but .the treatment
should be persisted in and renewed
health and activity will be the result.
The case of Mrs. W. Schooley, R.R.
No. 2, Tilsonburg, Ont., well illus-
trates the value of Dr. Williams' Pink
Pills in cases of health breakdown,
through weak, watery blood. Mrs.
Schooley says: "For upwards of five
years• I felt my strength declining, un -
111 at last I could not do light chores
around the place. Then a doctor was
called in, and after iloctoring about a
month he said that only an operation
would help rue. I did not feel lilts go-
ing through this, and decided that in
any event I would w,alt a while. I had..
no appetite, often had headaches ac-
companied by dizzy spells; several
times I had fainting spells, and my
legs would swell, and I could not even
sweep a floor without reeling several
times- Again a doctor was -called in
and ho said the trouble was general
debility and nervous breakdown. The
treatment, however, did not heti"; me,
and then ono evening as my husband
was reading the paper, he carie across
a case hi many rebpects similar to
mine, cured through the use of Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills. The next day
ho got ale a supply of the Pills, and
to their continued faithful use for
several months, I owe niy present
splendid health._ 1 may say that soon
after beginning the use of the pills I
felt a gradual.improvement in my con-
dition, my appetite improved, I began
to feel resited after ii night'o'sleep and
I gained in weight. lily ,friends were
continually expressing surprise at my
improved condition, as it was general-
ly believed I had become a chronic in-
valid. I alwaj's take a delight in tell-
ing them that DreWillianis' Pink Pit?s
are responsible for my present good
health, and as they have been a real
blessing to me I ,shall always continue
to praise them."
If you are suffering from any con.
dation • due to poor, watery blood, or
weak nerves, begin taking Dr. Wil-
liams' Piiik Pills now, and note how
your strength and health will improve.
You can get these pills through any
dealer in medicine, or they will be
sent by mail, post paid, at 50 cents a
box or six boxes for $2.50 by Tho Dr.

agreed -that her Navy Department—
probably Vie greatest wireless experts
in the world to-day—should design
the plant, erect the towers, and instal
the station complete in every respect..
Standards Higher Than Eiffel Tower.
To give the details of this scheme
in technical language would convey
nothing to readers who are not electi-
cal engineers or wireless students,.
but ane important point is well worth
mentioning. - The scheme embraced
the erection of eight tremendous steel
towers for carrying the antenna wires.
The U.S. Bureau of Yards and Docks
drew up the specifications for these
towers, and they are the real engineer-
ing marvel of the Bordeaux plant. '
They are 820 feet high, anal each
tower weighs 55 tons—•a very light
weight, indeed, eonsidering that the
Eiffel Tower contains 2,700 tons of
steel, and is not nearly so high as the
Bordeaux wireless towers. They are
three -logged. in shape, and' each leg
rests on a large circular, concrete plat
form sunk deeply into the ground. The
towers each carry elevators, and have
been pronounced almost as strongas
lighthouses. . The antennae system
which these eight towers support Is
far more powerful than are, other &ys.
tam in the world.
Many difficulties faced the builders
and electrical experts in the coulee of
their work on the station, but they
were all overcome, and now' the La-
fayette Station is easily the first of its
kind in the world.
Ultimately, it is expected that the
Bordeaux plant will be capable of
transmitting something like 72,000
words a day. Sending messages at
such a high speed continuously by
•hand es out of the question, so the
IVIarcotigrams will be sent out by
means of a mechanical device through
which a narrow •tape is run bearing
the dots and the dashes making up
the words to be "waved" over earth
and sea.
This tape will have peen previously
perforated by a special kind of type
writer, pretty much on the same linos
as the machines used by telegraphists
in the great centres of the world;

fixtures are fastened permanently,
that is, to walls and ceilings. In the
home, for example, interior decora-

the illuminating unite,. when it would
be much hotter to arrange the fur.

so, many old-fashioned kerosene

And this very flexibility has now
been made passible by the Invention
of a new method of connecting wires

base of each bracket fixture project
two curved arms; like the claws of a'

of the numerous wall receptacles, the
claws are simply inserted into the
slots, and the fixture is brought to

Rough on Nelson.
It was his firsttrip to London, al-
though he was no, longer young. But
he thoroughly enjoyed the sights and
sounds of the busy London streets. In
fact, since he came from the other
side of the border, nee enjoyed these
more than the cinemas and theatres,
where you have to pay to go in.
One afternoon he lingered to listen
to a small but hard-working band of
alldged musicians who were perform-
ing in a small side street.
When the "'selection” was ended
the visitor to London approached the
leader of tbe orchestra and asked
bluntly:
"What's the name 'o that tune ye've
jis' pleyed?"
' "The Death of Nelson,' sir," re-
plied the musican promptly, with vi-
sions of large tips and requests for en-
cores.
"Weel, mon," replied the other, as
he shook his head and moved off, "a'
I can say is, ye gave him an awful

Aerial Foes,
A Swiss aviator has recently been
in combat with another bird of pass-
age—a large and powerful eagle. .The
bird evidently resented pretty strong-
ly the aeronaut's entry into his do=
main, for he gave chase, and annoyed
him for some considerable time.
Eventually the airman was forced to
descend, owing to the bird's persist-
ency.
Before landing, however,.. he took
every posslble means to rid himself
.of his tormentor, He looped the loop,
nose-dived, righted the machine again,
completed a series of circles, but all
to no avail. The eagle had him every
time. This incident occurred some
6,000 feet above St. Moritz, and
created quite a stir.
That birds and insects take more
than a passing interest In the strides
man has made in the flying world is
described by a French naturalist and
airman. During the war he was in
charge of a captive balloon, and says
that the numbers of birds and insects
attracted to his aerial craft were
enormous. They not only came to
look, but to stay, and he was thus able
to secure many rare specimens.
