Rathwell of Luck - now were in town, having come down for the unveiling of the sol- diers' monument at Varna on Sat- urday. Their son, Arnold, was one of the gallant, boys whose memory is honoured by the mom - oriel. Mrs. Rathwell returned home Saturday evening but Mr. Rathwell remained until Monday. They have many, friends and rela- tives in Clinton and vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. • W. Eagleson and family of • Aberdeen, South Dakota., have been spend- ing the past week or so with the lady's father, Mr, James Stevens of town,, -,Mr. Eagleson's parents at Bayfield and with other friends hereabouts, It is severalyearssince they visited in Ontario and they are enjoying the family re- unions and the meeting with old Meech, They intend braking an COVPIT= CHECKS Owing to the.pecessity of supplying each customer with a counter check showing the tax separately, the demand by merchants for counter checks is being greatly increased. Also owing to the increase in the price of the paper from which counter checks are mads the price is steadily increasing. The scarcity of paper and' the increased demand will cause delay in delivery. Snell on Fri- day July 2nd. "Salads for hot days" by Mrs. Wells, Music, Mrs. Snell, Mrs, Little. A fifteen cent tea will be served. All ladies will be welcome. The Woman's Institute entertained the Ladies Club of Walkerburn on Wednesday last. A good time is re., ported. Mr. and Mrs. R. Proctor, Miss Proctor and Mr, and Mrs, W. Miss Mamie Ross was at Blyth try- ing the Entrance exams this week. Miss Lawdy Young of Regina is spending the vacation at her home here. Mrs. Chas, Ruddell returned home from a month's visit with friends at Gownstown. Mrs. Brown and family of Brant- ford spent a few days with Mrs. (Dr.) Young. Miss Belle Webster visited her sis- ter, Mrs. Saville at Clinton, last week. li' nllett Township A union picnic of school sections Nos. 1, 2 and 3 will be held on Mr, Thos, McMichael's fiats on Friday af- ternoon, July 2nd. All the ratepayers are invited to conte and bring their families and friends and any others who wish to have an afternoon of sports come along and bring your baskets and enjoy the afternoon. There. will be races, tug-of-war, be- tween teams from the different sec- tions, 'football games 'between Hul- lett and Tuckersmith, and between tine single and harried men ',of Sec- tions 1 and 2. Also a game between the school boys of 1 and 8. The Rev.'Mr. Pitts of Bayfield will preach to the Orangemen in St. John's, Anglican, church on Sunday evening next, July, 4th, at seven o'clock. The garden party held last week on behalf .of the Methodist church proved a grand success. The even- ing was fine, though a little cool, and brought out a large gathering, for which Varna is so well noted. The Neilsen. Band rendered many varied selections being very generous and also efficient with their music. The ladies of the congregation again proved themselves equal to the task as the tables were fairly groaninlg under the good things supplied so abundantly. The booth was kept busy in dealing out refreslunents and all pronounced it to be one of the• most successful garden parties held here. The proceeds amounted to $214.00, The following is the standing of the pupils in S. 5, No. 6 in the vil- lage of Varna, based on the recent promotion examinations.
