The death.in April of 113r, John Cath. cart Wason removed from the British Parliament one of its most picturesque figttres. Ile was the tallest member of the House, a giant of imposing and magnificent physique, six feet six Inches in height. outsideof politics his specie/ties ware sports and knit- ting. Indeed, he cldd not keep kn'lttiug entirely outsicie, for he had the Imabit of bringing his "fancywork" with hint to Westminster, and et occupying Him- self wifh it its some quiet corner while waiting for a division, or of carrying It with him to the slnoktug room or the tea room. He bad acquired the art In New Zealand, where for ,aever1l years he was a sheep farmer, affd had taught himself to knit his own seeks and stockings from wool raised an the place. The knitting, however, was less to provide himself with socks than to beguile the rnblloto y of long e3enings on a lonely station. He rapidly be- came au expert and found the habit so tranquilizing and agreeable that ho continued It after• his return to Eng- land and his election as a member of Parliament. Of course his fellow members made all manner of fun of the sporting giant and 0f his ladylike knitting, --although the enormous socks that 11e toed and heeled were of anything but ladylike dhniensleas,—and at last their jokes, praetlea1 and verbal, although they never rulfled his temper, convinced him 11111 it would be more comfortable to knit elsewhere, and he reluctantly left his knitting bag at home. SI -Ie looked a mile high and that 'Stocking of his a yard long," mie Of kis colleagues told a visitor, "And there he sat, click, click, cllekiug, with the men blowing blue rings all round him, trying to make him drop stitches or tangle up his yarn or lose his ten - per. But 11e wouldn't; he just kept on knitting till that confounded click, click, cliche! fairly got on one's nerves: it sounded like the shuttle of the Fates." The Fates, weaving the red -splashed web of war, brought round a day when every knitter knitted in hard -driven earnest; and the giant's patriotic needles, unthreatened by ridicule, in- side the sacred parliamentary pre- cints or without, fiew with the rest. Perhaps now that women may sit in Parliament daintier angers may con- tinue the custom for which the great Muscular hands of a sportsman have set a precedent, Does Lady Astor, we wonder, ever bring her embroidery or her mending bag to temper the dull. nese of au unpromising session? Bern in Bologna, in Italy, on April 250, 1874, Marconi, es a young man, wee laughed at in Ida native ity for his Eitel/lige experiments, in which he at. tempted to send messages• through apace without the wee of any material conductor, But his arrival in England caused .a great sensation, for he conetr'ueted a wireless set capable of covering a dis- tance of nine eralesi In 1889 he bridged the English Channel, and broke down all eeriows doubts as to the tremendous value of hie inveutlon,, His great achievement came a year toter 'wheal the Atlantic Ocean was fleet spanned by wireless waves. For this important esperienent Marconi erected a giant translllibter at Poldhu, Leaving detailed' instructions with his friends its charge of the Peldhu station,• Marconi sailed for Newfound- land. The night fixed tar the expert. meat was far from propitious, Time wind blew a gale, and Nature herself seemed to conspire against him. But Marconi! knew that the wind had no effect on wireless waves, and as the appointed Hour drew close when Pold- hu would send out the prearranged signals, he and his assistants strained their ears at the telephone headpieces —waiting for the first sounds that would spell success. They carne at last—three distinct dots repeated at regular intervals. Be- yond all doubt, the Old World had communicated with the New by wire- less telegraphy. It may safely.be said of Marconi that ho is that strange form of genius, it practical dreamer. Many people dream wonderful things, but only one born in a hundred years can convert his dream thoughts late a practical benefit for humanity. His wireless has saved thousands of lives at sea. Off on the Wrong Foot. The principal of a certain school prided himself on the spend with which his pupils went through the -fire drill. When he asked thein, "What would you children do it I told you there was a fire in the building?" the answer he had ta.ugbt thein rolled with astonishing glibness from their torgnes. One day Dr, Henry van Dyke was to lecture to the pupils. In introducing him the principal asked, "Now, child- ren, what evould you do 1f I told you that Dr. Henry van Dyke was to lec- ture here to -day?" Anrl three hundred voices responded 1n singsong, "We would rise promptly put away our books and then quietly and without disorder, but as quickly as possible, file out to the street." • SPEAKS HIGHLY OF BABY'S OWN TABLETS Once a mother has used Baby's Own Tablets for leer little ones she is al- ways pleased to speak highly of them to other mothers, She knows the good they have done her children and realizes that`ber experience should be et benefit to others. W. Robertson, of Ottawa, Commissioner of the Boy Scouts la Canada, in appearing before the Gen- eral Synod held in Hamilton recently, stated that the doctrine' taught t11e. young Scouts even surpassed the ad- ntls' ton of St, Paul, "I keep my body under." "The Boy Scouts;" he continued, "go the Apostle one better in that respect, for they are taught to keep their souls on top anti their bodies under, I say, therefore, that a, three-year course of training by any boy wile becomes a Scout is of such value that it will mould his character for the remainder of his life, and make the type of citi- zen this country can not have tee many of in the years to come." An anomalous revelation made b'y the late war, Dr. Robertson said, wee that the whole human race, had not decayed In any way as regards cour- age, but physically it had deteriorated very noticeably. Medical examine - noes in connection with the military service had disclosed that fact. Hence there was a vital need of according the Boy Scout movement the fullest support, In the schools of Canada, be said, it was found that 5 per cent. et the pupils suffered from minor physi- cal ailments. A high typo of citizen- ship would remedy this. The Boy Scout movement made not only for good citizenship, but for a rugged physique as well. It performed a dual function—moulded character and made rugged youths of those who might otherwise be physical weaklings, - Quick Action of Omaha Scouts Pre- vents Wreck of Express Train. James Caldwell, 13, and Clarence Swingholm, 12, Omaha Bay Scouts, saved through passenger train No. 6 on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railway from being wrecked a few days ago and are being acclaimed as heroes. Returning to their scout camp after an all-night hike, the boys discovered a large tree lying across the rails, and at the same tinge heard the train whistle for a curve 300 yards away. Pulling Caldwell's red sweater from his back the Scouts ran down the track waving it frantically, and the engineer stopped the train a few yards from the tree. It is supposed wild honey hunters felled the tree across the track and decamped when they saw what they had done. It these boys had not been Scouts this heroic action would never have occurred. What a singular ad- vantage of an all-night hike! Wanted—A Boy Scout. Addressing the 27th Boy Scouts at their dinner held in Toronto recently, Mr. John Northway said that he had been given such splendid service by Boy Scouts that when he wanted a boy in his business now, he always ad- vertised for a Boy Scout. Business men—adopt this slogan. You will find it pays. Boy Scouts are not clock- e-atcliers; they are always obedient and always prompt, and they have been trained to be physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. - e Cats have perhaps the most traces of ancestral 'hab'its.
