April seventhie the date of Clin-
ton sprjng show, the great event of
..this district,
Speaker Parliament of the Cameo
.I,ogislaturo celebrated a birthday on
Friday and received the congratula-
zeions of all the groups in the House.
. * a * *
Quebec Province makes five times
:as much maple sugar as all the rest
•of the Dominion put together. Good
eek to them, May the good work
:go on.

The great controversy as to "Day-
light Saving" is on again. What we
`would like to know is what the peon
`pie Who are so keen on saving an
Ilhoue of daylight- do with It when.
'at is saved,
President Harding, we are told,
-"may Call a world council to ,settle
-the affairs of Europe." It will be
-remembered that ex -President Wil -
'son had some notion of settling af-
-fairs in Europe only, somebody
threw a monkey wrench into the
-machinery.
Mr. Rdbert H. Coats, Dominion
.Statistican, is a native of Clinton
and. spent his boyhood and youth in.
-,this town. He went out into the big
world and made good .and The• -News -
Record has often published items of
interest about him,' being proud of
'late fact' that so clever and success-
• ful a man should. be a .Clinton boy.
- We are changing our. mind, however.
'That man has- developed a most an-
„. arioying bump of inquisitiveness since
'leaving his native heath, and every
:,year for some years past he hap been
_sending out, under Government sanc-
tion, a long blank form containing
-the most intimate questions about
our own private business, such as:
"What wages do you pay?" "How
-many horns do you work?" "flow'
many employees have you- on your
staff?" and " Do you use any saw
loge iii• your business?" and that
:sort, of thing. And ,.the worst part
of it is that you have to answer all
-these questions truthfully and to the
best of your ability under pain- of
-fine or imprisonment, or both. If
B. H. Coats was in the printing bus-
iness he would know that there is
really no time to sit down and wor-
ry out these questions. We begin
-to think that he would have better
stayed in Huron county and given
-his- mind to farming, or the eulti-
• nation of roses, as his brother, Re-
iCoats
Re-
gistrar of Goderich
,does. We
don't like to seem to take anything
-from the reputation of a clever man,
and especially one of Clinton's bon-
-.est -to -goodness native sons, but
we'd rather any day be banded
..a bouquet out of Registrar Coats'
rose garden thana blank form out
of Statistican Coats' office.

Ile Premier Drury tells the legislature
• that there will be some, taxation of
- the Hydro-Eleetric power. Just
what that tax will be is not yet
'known. The commission appointed to
look jute the matter recommended
• that a tax of two dollars per horse-
-power he charged all those using hy-
dro and thus a revenue be created
-Tor extending the use of hydro • to
those municipalities not "how connee-
•.ted.
Some newspapers, The Farmers'
,Sun, for instance, takes the ground
that the province has been develop-
ing the hydro' 'scheme and handing
-:it over to the cities and towns' and
• refusing it to the farmers. This ie
:•a foolish idea and there' -are' few inen
so ill-informed: as to be taken in by
it. The hydro has been developed
..°by the municipalities using it and is
•not costing the other municipalities a
.cent. The government has of course
;guaranteed bonds but against those
guarantees holds the debentures of
-the municipalities for every dollar.
Goderieh' township ,pays nothing for
• the hydro used, . by 'Clinton. Clinton
,;raid, nothing for hydro until she con-
nected up with it on her own account.
"To read the Sun articles one would
think that the government was de-
-voloping all this power and distrib-
•.uting it, -like a cruel step -mother,
..only to favorite children.
The motto of the Hydro Electric is
l -"Power at Cost," and, it is easier
to distribute' power cheaply to big
.towns and cities, where . there are
1 rami;e uesrs, than over great extents
-;Df farming areas where a few horse
:Power only is used on each farm,
"That is the reason power is so much-
higherr accordingly in the country
istricts,
That hydro would be a great boon
-to the farm goes without saying and
the 'time is surely coming waren a
way must be found by which power
scan be distributed bhroughout all, otir
farming communities. But that way
is not by misstating facts and en-
edeavoring to stir up class hatreds.
-The only Way to get the best results
for everybody is to work together
:and endeavor to find a way to serve
all. The Government Conunission
'recommended the taxing of the hy-
'dro users two dollars a horsepower
'but if rural R, municipalities began
'using it and had to pay over that tax
how much further on would they be?
'The hydro scheme is the most won-
-derful thing any province ever had
but let us not be like quarrelsome
,riliildren, who quarrel ever a new
toy until' it is broken and no good to
.anybody. Hydro will serve us all;
it is up tc us to find out the best
•avay to inake it thus serve us.
' '.James Jones, .fanner, • in. Zone
township, was found by his son hang-
°ing in the Bern, was resnsitatcd, but
is now violently insane.
