Ine. ala Vae eel Itte Ina It is somewhat of a surprise to' learn but rather to regard his action as a misdemeanor which has been 'cornmit- from police records that. the great majority of highwaymen:recently ar- rested in Toronto and other cities are mere boys with half-developed,'minde. Our previous .conception of the square - jawed, square -shouldered, hard -visag- ed, old tough has been changed and mow we see the pale -faced youth, gen- erally of poor physique, taking his place. This career of crime has often started with little acts of theft which passed unnoticed or un- punished but which, if thor- oughly - investigated, would. have revealed an abnormal state of the .juvenile mentality. If a young 'person slips off with it rocktmg-'horse, a jumping -jack, a toy balloon or something of that sort front a store counter when nobody is look- ing, he is not doing the right thing. In fact he is doing something that might be regarded as a thef t, alt'hougit probably it would be unfair to brand the youngster as a thief. The Chief Probation Officer of tale Juvenile Court in Toronto calls a first theft by a boy or girl as an "occurrence," and does not take steps to have tite child brought up on any charge of stealing. Instead he brings the youngster to his office for a chat, finding out all the circumstances of the case and what motives 'brought about the act of thef t. This little ooroferenee is very informal and has in view the o'btainingan in- formation as to the mental calibre of ted through thoughtlessness. The report of the Social Worker who investigates each particular of- fence on the part of a juvenile is an elaborate document dealing with every possible •condition and influence in the child's life. Even the mother's pre- natal influences are inquired into, and whether the child was nursed, or bottle-fed. It would be interesting and instructive, if statistics were at hand, to compare the number of Juv- enile Court 'cases that had been •breast-fed in infancy, to those fed on the bottle. The child's record and progress. at school are taken into ac- count and afterwards a searching analysis is trade as to the child's men- tal and tliysieal make-up, including its attitude to other members of the family, to •companions, and to social and religious activities. The borne situation is also given .abtention, ques- tions even being asked as to the loca- tion of the house and its surroundings, ,conditions in the home, attd the gen- eral type of people in the community. An important point that has a dis- tinct bearing on a child's make-up is the presence or absence of over- crowding in the home. The injurious effects of overcrowding from a heath standpoint as well es from social and moral aspects, cannot be too strongly emphasized. The impression might he conveyed the child, and whether he knows right by these remarks that the Juvenile from wrong, or' what the taking of Court was willing or anxious to things that do not'beiang to him, acts- blame everybody and everything for ally means. He also gives the delin- an offence except the young person eluent a warnsng as to the risk he is running of .committing a thef t, and ad- vises him not to repeat such an act. If a second theft is committed the case environment play a large part in the is brought to the Juvenile. To every woman belongs the right to enjoy a healthy, active lite; yet nine out of ten suffer from some form df bloodleosness. That is why one sees on every side pale, thin cheeks, dull eyes and dropping figures—sure sigma of headache.% weak backs, aching limbs and uncertain health. All weak women should win the night to be well by refreshing their weary bodies with the new, rich, red blood that promptly traiwtorms them into healthy, attrac- tive women. This new, red blood is supplied by Dr. Williams; Pink Pills, which reaches every organ a,nd, every nerve in the body. Through the use of these pills thousands of women have fouled benefit when suffering from anaemia, indigestion, general weakness and those ailments' from which women alone suffer. Among the many women who tell of rte good Dr. Williams' Pink Pills have done them 4s Mrs. L. .Hicks, Round Hill, N.S., who says,: "I became very much run down in health; my blood seamed weak and watery, my strength failed, and I waste" easily tired that my work was a burden. I ltad often read about Dr. Williams' Pink Pills and decided to try them, and I can truly say that after using three boxes I found my- self gaining, and under a further use of the pills all my old-time energy and vitality was, restored. Out of my own experience I can strongly recommend this medicine." The gland con.. sista o£ two lobes comtecte'd with a narrow band called the isthinus, It lies in the front of the neck with one lobe on either aide of the trachea, or windpipe, In this country simple enlargement of the gland is not un- common, but it ocrure much oftener in eertain parts of Switzerland, Italy and England. In those countries lime and magnesia in the water is held respontihTe for the disease; but the sporadic cases of enlargement in Can. Oa remain unexplained, though tomo authorities attribute them to fatigue. Goitre is said to bo much more com- mon 'among women than among men, and it sometimes runs in families. in most C580a' of simple goitre there are no symptoms except a noticeable swelling in the neck and the discom- fort sometimes eaueod by the en- larged glands pressing on the 'gullet, the windpipe or some of the import- ant nerves in the neck. The ,swelling may occur in only one lobe or in only the connecting band; or it may affect the whole gland. When the enlarged gland extends downward behind the breastbone, it may press on certain important veins and cause swelling of the face, drowsiness or' headache. Tt may press on the pneumogastric nerve, causing a rapid pulse, or on another nerve, causing a spasmodic cough 'or difficult respiration. Simple goitre is usually treated with iodide of .potassium or with ex- tract of thyroid gland administered internally or with applications of radium or' the X-rays. Sometimes physicians paint the pa'tient's. neck evlith tincture of iodine, on the theory that the iodine acts directly upon the enlarged .gland insaead of indirectly through the blood, as when iodide of potassium is used. The sufferer should try to avoid overexertion either of mind or of body, for, as we have already said, fatigue is believed to be a frequent cause of goitre. If the treatment fails, and the gland grants eo large as to disfigure the patient or to give him great discom- fort, a surgeon should be employed. The operation of removal is not especially serious. There are weak bays, boys who lack resourcefulness, boys whose ideas of right and wrong are distorted, but there never was a boy who did not nee. turally—oonecionsly or un'oonsolously —do things that he believed to be right.
