RELIEVES. PAIN'
Laughed at Doctor Bell.
Some interesting reminiscences are
told in The London Times by Or.
Alexander Graham Bell, invento r of
the telephone. Dr. Bell, who recently'
elicited his native city of Pldinburgh,
freedom of which Tram conferred upon,
him, was intbrvfewe'd by a member of
the Times staff, who renders the con-
versation as follows:
"I finished with the telephone over
thirty-five years ago, bat it has been
extremely interesting to watch its pro-
gress. This evening I have leeen hear-
ing of future developments at the
meeting of the wireless aectIon of the I
Institute of ]Electrical Engineers.. I
heard a most Interesting address by!
Professor Earles'. I represent the
past; Mr. Eccles represents the fu-
ture, When I invented the telephone
forty-five years ago nobody realized
the developments which would take
plane.° In 1877 or 1878 the directors of
the National Telephone Company,
which had just been organized, asked.
me for my ideas as to the future of
the telephone. I created a great smile
b; outlining the central exchange sys-
tem which exists to -day. It seemed
like a Utopian dream to those direct-
ors, and my letter, which was printed
and sent to each director, has often
bean quoted to show the ambition of
an inventes. Not a single copy of that
letter was preserved, and when I asked
the recipients ot It what they had
done with it the invariable reply was:
" 'Well, I rather smiled at it and
tore it up.' "

Motorist's Lavatory.
Often it happens that,motorists are
obliged to Stop and repair, their cars
far from any available water supply,
and then it is 'a question of washing
their hands. Annoying, often.
But Edgar S. Curtiss, of Cincinnati,
Ohio, hasdevised a portable lavatory,
watch, having the outward appearance
of a suitcase, may readily be put to
ase in such an emergency.
Halt of it is a water basin; the other
half is a basin. All that is necessary
- iA to open it and turn a tap. A small
box with a watertight ltd, to contain a
cake of soap, is mounted on the tank,
which is also provided with a spring
clamp to hold a towel. '
Thus the motorist can wash his
hands at a moment's notice, dry them,
empty the basin by unscrewing a -cap
which closes• the outlet and go on hie
way rejoicing.

If Pett wantyour gift to be valitod,
choose something et Permanent in,
tereet, A "topical" book on loan
tranelent question will only be a later
embarrassment; one hesitates to dis-
card a gift, yet a "dead" book 1A an
eyesore in a private library,
Never give- a third-rate novel that
Yea would not buy for your own read-
ing, such a gift is an insult to your
friend.
To give bookie successfully, two
things are necessary; first, a lunow-
ledge of the recipient's. tsetse and ex-
lating library; second, a knowledge ot
the book or author that you choose,
The next consideration is, cost, and
herein Ltes• a great advantage in using
books as gifts, • We eau not only .spend
any sum from twenty-five cents to ea'
many dollars but we need .not limit
ourselves to one book. Having de-
cided toy spend say five dollars'' on a
book present, it is quite' unintelligent
to limih our selection to. books of that
precise value,, or such a sum one can
have something new and something
old, something grave and something
gay, making up a group of books of
various'kinds. that could not fall to in
teres t.
Bulk, too, is an important question.
A clumsy, padded, cumbersome book
of -the oke -fashioned "gift" type will
impress the .recipient favorably or
otherwise according to his intelligence.
As time goes' on, however, the least
discerning man will begin to ]tate a
too bulky book; he will begrudge its
space on his shelves, its weight in his
suitoase, its clumsy balance in his
hand. Choose, if possible, something
approaching the pocket size; there are
thousands of good things- at your ser-
vice.
As regards binding, except for a
standard book, of which several edi-
tions aro available, we have, of course,'
to take it as we find it. One caution
may .be borne in mind, though; avoid
glaring colors; a neutral inoftensdve
shade is preferable, so that the book.
may harmonize with any 'ord'inary
scheme of decoration.
Consider, too, the occasion of the
gift, or weddings and Christmas it is
fairly easy to choose something ap-
propriate. • For weddings, popular
classics and standard authors are al-
ways safe, providing you remember
the literary tastes of the bride, For
Christmas a book need not of course
be "Christmassy;" you only need to
know your friend's tastes and his
existing library to pick up something
acceptable.
Parting gifts, however, require more
careful thought Only an intimate
sympathy ot taste, and a wide know-
ledge of the best in literature, will en-
able you ta'find something that sym-
bolizes the best in your friendship.

Injuries Incidental to Sports.
The injuries to which athletes are
liable are many and various and may
affect almost any part of the body in -
aide or out. Some of them are serious
enough to require immediate surgical
treatment; others' are slight, though
they may be painful and even cripple
the victim for a while. Omitting the
Fractures and dislocations that cannot
be treated at home and omitting also
the injuries to internal organs, es-
peolally the heart, that may come
from prolonged and excessive strain,
we will speak here only et the minor
injuries.
The most common are contusions
and bruises. Although In contusions
and 'bruises the skin is not broken,
the undorlytug tissues, as the sub-
cutaneous bleeding, turning the skin
black and blue indicates, may be ex
tensively lacerated. The best way to
treat a bruise is to give the hrjured
part immediate rest and to apply to it
some firm, elastic pressure like that of
a gauge bandage or a pad of absorbent
cotton.. A bandage or a pad is better
than hat or cold applications.. The ap-
plications prevent neither the disco]-
oration. nor the swelling, though they
may hasten the absorption of the ef-
fused blood. Muscular strains and
sprains, from slight stiffness tu actual
disablement, are commoner than are
braisesi; almbst everyone Peals some
stiffness. or discomfort atter unaccus-
tomed or prolonged exercise. Per-
salts in that' -predicament should rub
the injured part with liniment—it
makes little difference- what kind—
and continually and gently exercise it.
A more serious andpainful accident
befalls the athlete who breaks inusdu-
lar fibres by some sudden movement.
Oddly enough, a man is more liable to
that injury when the weather is. dry
and cold than when it is damp and
muggy.. The reason may br that his
movements. are more energetic during
snapping cold weather. When a man
breaks a muscle, he feels a sharp pain
and finds that tire affected lamb has
lost much of its power. Sometimes he
oan see a d'epressdon whale the rup-
ture leas occurred. He should ]have
the limb bandaged with straps of ad-
hesive plaster, the steady pressure of
which is beneflctal. Unless the rup-
ture is extensive and accompanied
with mucor, effusion of blond 'beneath
the skin, the patient should exercise
moderately from the first elev. even

What Are Comets?

A Curate's Silk Stockings.
The love of a poor Nottingiramahih'e
curate for a certain young woman who
could not afford to stop knitting her
woollen stockings to listen to his -love-
making was responsible for the Intro-
duction of the stocking -frame.
The curate, whose name was Wid-
Liam Lee, immediately set This wits. to
work to solve the difficulty, and in
1$88 he invented his- stocking -frame"
He removed to London, and Queen
Elizabeth saw his ingenious invention,
which could aleo be used, and was
used later, for the first time in the
hna•nufaetllre of silk stockings.
• The Queen, however, refused to
grant this enterprising clergyman a
patent for hie dnvention•, '
Sha professed too great -a love for
her subjects who earned their dally
bread in the old-fashioned manner of
hand -knitting, and concluded her ob-
jection by rentarlcing that "tit endoy
the exclus'iYe privilege of making
sbogltiugs for the whole of my sub-
jecta• is too impertaiht to grant to any
individual:"
Poor Lee was bitterly disappointed,
but mot altogether disheartened; a few
roars later he applied his invention
for the making of silken hose, where-
upon the French Ambassador tempted
him to go to Rouen. But in 1810 he re-
turned to England, still disappointed.

Mightier Than Himalayas.
Among the greatest results achieved
by the lieddn explorations in Tibet
was the discovery of a continuous
mountain chain, 2,000 utiles long,
stretching east and west, and which,
taken as a whole, is the most ruaseive
range on the crust of the earth. Its
average height above sea level is
greater than that of the Himalayas,
and although Its peaks aro from 4,000
to 5,000 feet lower than Mount Ever-
est, its passes average 3,000 feet high-
er than those of the Himalayas,
The .eastern a.nd western parts of
this range were known before, but the
central and highest part, in Bongba,
was unexplored previous to Dr. He -
din's visit. Ile crossed ten passes in
the range.
