Mr. -.1ffeDougall recalled the nanfee
of many of .the early settlers; the
IVIeDonalds, thb Elliotts, the Ander-
sons, the Coxes, the 1VIel'hails, the
Hayes, the Connollys, etc., many •of
.the farms taken up being still retain-
ed by descendants of the original set..
tiers. Speaking of the Connollys,
lrfr, McDougall said: "I nursed Jim
Connolly (now of Goderieh) when he
was a baby; I wouldn't like to do it
now.”
• M. McDougall waa a son of the
late Peter McDougall, who wee a na-
tive of the lend of heather and who
same cart td' Canada with his young
wife in 1833. The eldest son was
born in mid -ocean, while crossing the
•Atlantie, which of course, did not af-
fect his •citizenship, as he was born
on a British ship. The family set-
tled in the "Queen's Bush," being a-
mongst the early settlers, as Goderich
township was first ',settled in 1828.
One of the interesting aeatures of
Mr.slfferrougall's boyhood was the
• fait that one of his school teachers
was /10110 other thaxi a nephew of the
illustridus Bobby. Burns, Dr. Begg, a
medical doctor, • graduate of Edin-
burgh University, Who came out to
this country to practise' his profes-
sion,,but who later, perhaps owing to
the discopraging healthiness of the,
pioneers, took up the professiob of
•teaching and for a time: taught what
was known as "Whitely1s" school, the
Porter's Hill school- • section. Dr.
Begg, from all accounts, was some-
thing of .a .character. Ile "boarded
arolinci",, as was the custom in the ear.,
ly days, staying a week at the home
of each scholar. "As there were
nine in our family remarked Mr. Mes
Dougall, "we had the teacher a good
deal." He was evidently a good
teacher. • "1 have never since Islet a
man who had so good a command of
the English language," declared Mr.
1VIeDougall. Be, may have and prob-
ably, did, tagiress correct English on
his eeholars as Mx. IVIeDougall uses
good English himself. Dr. Begg was
in the habit of going to Goderiali for
over the week -end quite frequently
and the Monday following one of
these visits, Mr. McDougall declares,
Was usually rather a bad one for the
pupils, as the teacher was generally
in a rather bad humour, but ordinar-
ily they got along fairly well. Mr. IVIc-
Dougall was only, threshed once, "and -
I'm a little bit ashamed,, of it," he
soniiessed.
