Mrs. A. • •Cousins of Flint,, Mich. has
been in town the past week, owing
to: the'illness and subsequent death In ' a recent issue
of -her mother, Mrs. H. Watkins. • Toronto Globe had the• following
account of an address given. an Ilam -
lite' by 'Dr. Ti 11. Holdsworth of
Pittsburg. " Dr: Holdsworth is an old
Goderich township boy," son of Mrs.
Holdsworth of Hohnesviile:.
"No two other countries in the
world are so privileged to giye' a
sorely:. wanted leadership to dis-
traught Etirbyc as Ganadi' and the
United States; said Dr. H. T. Holds -
"worth, Vice-president of the Bank of
Pittsburg, in an address to the Dan
adian Club -to-night.
Whileit was perhaps premature
as yet to pass judgment tin the
United States ' fat its Bost -war etti-
tude, Dr.,, Holdsworth, said, his 'per-
sonal opinion was that his country
did commit . a tremendous , mistake
when it ,aefused to ally itself with
the League of Nations. There lavas a
steadily ,growing.force of, public opin-•
ion' ihthat country, however, which
was beginning to assert; that no na-
tion can. live unto itself, and that the
time is ripe for the United States to
intervene in European' affairs,,
Dr. Holdsworth "said the .people of
Canada' and the "-United States were
one, with common ,impulses, ambi-
tions and responsibilities, Their re-
latonibiji Was unique and without :a
parallel ar ywhere else Mahe world.
Their destiny' was• also a common
one, but their people meat not be so
selfish, they • should not im-
agine the .: destiny of each,
couit;try can: be sticcess£ully
worked out irrespective • of what
happens anywhere in the world.
What was needed ;at wesent, said
Dr. Holdsworth, was for Uncle Sam
and John Bull to take hold of each
other's hand, sign 'en the dotted line,
pledging ,full protection to' France,
and say td Germany: `Never again
shall you violate':' her if ..our com-
bined resistance can prevent it'"
