The Mail and Empire has just is-
suad a special number celebrating its
half century of existence. It is a
,'-very creditable production and gives
some interesting local and Canadian f
history.' The Mail was established
in 1872 and one by one it has ah-
1sorbed The Empire, The News, at
time of'' taking • over called, The
Times, and The World. The Em-
pire was amalgamated with'the Mail
:and the he publication has.: since been
rr„ known as The Mail and Empire, but
-the other papers were absorbed. At
s`the time The World was taken over
The .Mail was described' by a .corn --
tempary as "The paper that .eats

has won for itself a sure place in
-the newspaper' field"and -it will no
doubt in due -time celebrate its one
hundredth' birthday. That is the
