inim out of work in many cases
was once the boy without recreation.
This statement has been made by rea-
ponSible 'people on several occasions
/ecently and the truth of it becomes
mare and, more apparent as the ques-
tion of recreation is thought of. A
iew days ago 1 listened to a very- in-
teresting address at the Border Cities
.0haneher of Commerce by the Director
of Recreation foz• the City of Detroit.
Supervieed playgrounds for the young
was one ef the chief topics this gentle-
man discussed and the benefit of these
playgrounds to the health and morals
.of the boys and girls of that ,city is
strikingly app-arent. Youth must have
an opportunity for recreation -6f not,
e stunted man or woman is the result.
The so-called "bad toy" pranks which
i,nvol_ved windOw-smashing and wilful
ar unwilful damage to property, have
been -practically done away with, while
the number of atreet accidents to chil-
dren 1as been reducedi•by half since
playgiounds have 'been promidecl. The
I:erecter of Recreation explained vevy
aorcib y thatinaddition to the recrea-
tion. itself, much good resulted., to beys
and girls from healthy rivalry with
t135l0 playillateS—ono hoy could eun Cr
i;ye spin, a .topjust a little better
than those -around bios, mid hence he
becaine a model for the others, thereby
developing amongst them a sense of
appreciation of the boy who did his
part well. The sense of citizenship:a-cf.
realizing the worth of your neighbor
was thus inculcated among these boys
and girls by watching others play and
themselves taking part in the recrea-
tion. In'addition, the siipervieion of the
playgrounds enabled the smaller and
weaker boys and girls to get a chance
at the swings, -teeters and •other ap-
Paratus,forthe children were all.given
an opportunity in turn to amuse them
selves. In this way, consideration for
each other was. taught, •and selfishness
frowned upon. .
An important point now, being rec-
ognized is that the man is, really' a
boy grown-up, and that the man also
needs exercise -to •suit his health and
teinperament. GenerallY speaking, a
man healthy in body and mind desires
to Worle—he wants te fill hie place in
oociety and 'do his work. Well. To this
end his -health must be good and there
is no better way to maintain good
health that' by helpful._ exercise •end
recreation, which should be brought
within the reach of everyone,' whether
child or adult. -
