,founding. It was in 1841 that the
county wee organized and given is

past century, has contributed Inch
to the development of 'Canada sad
particulaiy in the West. It was
settled originally by a fine . sock
from the British Isles. Their sons
and grandsons had still the pioneer-
ing blood in them and" when the
West opened up they migrated to
longe, numbers.
A list of Huron County boys, who
have helped make the West woalrl

be mentioned. Hon. James Green-
way, who was premier of Manitoba
for 12 years, came from Centralia,
and beflore he went West was mem-
ber for South Huron in the Canad-
ian House. Two Saskatchewan pre-
miers came from Huron County,
Hon. W. G. Martin, whose father
was a well-known Presbyterian min-
ister at Exeter, and Hon. James G.
Gardiner, now federal minister ct
agriculture. Mr. Martin is today
chief justice of Saskatchewan. Mr.
Gardiner was !born at Farquhar,
near Exeter. The late Hon. Robert
Weir, minister of agriculture in the
Bennett ministry, was born. at Wing -

Saskatchewan Government, is a re-
tive of Goderich. , 71hen we must
not overlook' Han, William Aber -
hart, the Social Credit premier of
Alberta. He was born on a farm
near Seaforth. The list could be
extended indefinitely.
Perhaps the two greatest notables
born in Huron. County were Sir
John Willison and Sir William Ot-
ter; Sir Jdhn was born near Var-
na. He has an interesting story to
tell in his "Reminiscences" of his
early days on the farm and clerking
in a store .in Huron County. Sir
William was also born on a farm.
near Clinton. Few Canadians have
had a more distinguished military
career. Ile fought in the Fenian
Raid and commanded the column In
the Northwest Rebellion - of 1885
which marched on Battlerford. Lit-
er lie captured the Indian chief,
Poendmtaker. He commanded the
first Canadian contingent to ,South
Africa and was wounded in action
in 1900. He was the first Canad-
ian to be dbief of the general staff.
During the Great War he was too
