Petroleum, or crude oil, results, cording to a majority of geologists, from the natural decomposition of countless marine animal and vege- table organisms. The oily substance thus producted is forced down through porus rock by various causes, such as gravitation, capil- lary attraction, pressure, etc., uutil it reaches a layer of formation which it cannot penetrate. At the same time he said no action was contehvlated with bat- ter prices at present levels of around 29 cents a pound wholesale at Montreal, Should 'prices go high- er a more serious view of the situa- tion would be taken. Word at the board was that a tendency for prices to climb had tapered off in the past few days. According to information give.t ;he 'board there is always a season- al increase in buter prices at this sloe of the year but the present is a little greater than aver- age. The increase was accounted for partly by dry pasturage during August and September, which cut down on !butter production and di- version of considerable milk to cheese for export to the 'United Kingdom where demand for Cana- dian cheese is heavy. 'The prices board spokesman said !there was. no suggestion of a bu°ter .shortage. At O•at. 1 stooks of cream- ery .butter in .cold storage totalled 58,63'7)895 pounds compared with 57,- 01'3,153 pounds on the same date last year. I How to Use The Flag At such a time, when the national flag, is. being used much. more than in normal days, questions., concerning regulations as to its use come up much more frequently. Normally, it is the spirit of loyalty that prompts the display of the flag that is the un- potrant thing, but it is also very im- portant that its use should be digni- fied by an observance of the correct procedure. The following concise In- structions as to how to use the flag have been, published by the lm- peri5a.1 Order, Daughters of the I3m- pire, and will be of interest to citiz• ens iu general: 1. The Union Jack is the official flag of Canada, and should be the one flown in Canada. 2. The Red and Blue Ensigns with the Coat -of -Arms of Canada in the fly, are intended for use afloat and on official building's outside of Can- ada, They are not correctly used on buildings in Canada. 3. The flag should not be hoisted before sunrise, nor allowed to re- main up after sunset. 4. In hoisting the flag the broad white stripe in the cross of St. An- drew should be. above the red stripe of St. Patrick on the side of the bag next to the masthead; if reversed, it is an Indication of distress, 5, The flag should always be car- ried upright and not allowed to touch the ground. 6, When placed at halt -must, the flag should first be raised to the masthead and then lowered. 7. Wihen used for indoor decora. tion the flag should never be be• low a person sitting. 8. It should never be used as a. cover for bale, box or desk, except at a "unitary religious ceremony, and nothing should be placed upon it, except the Bible, In regard to the National Anthem '(''God !Save the King"), a final 'clause is added "When ever the National Anthem is !played or sung, all persona within shearing should 1117111111111.
