Russell II ,✓ EB .4.444 WIN MEDALS AND FREE TRIP JOHN LISTER HAROLD PICKET • An outstanding feature at the International Plowing Match, held at St. Thomas this year, was the event sponsored by Salada Tea Company. The big "Salada" Special class, open to all plowmen who had qualified at branch matches and to all winners of first prizes in the open Jointer classes at International Matches from and including 1927, brought together the top rank plowmen of the Province and attracted wide attention. The first and second prizes are gold and silver medals and an extensive trip to include areas of agricultural interest. Twelve cash prizes ranging from $25.00 to $5.00 were also awarded for this event. Top honours went to John Lister and Harold Picket, both from Hornby, Ontario. The Empire Service Column —o— Continued from Page One trying to convince the world that Great Britain is about to become a Possession of the United States. This is surely an admission that he has 'failed dismally to snake 'g a German possession, and in some ,measure is one of the first "truths" he has published. Two such Nations must naturally "belong to each other in this crisis, for failure ,f. one means failure for the other. Democracy is at stake, this means both countries must be equally af- rec ed by the result. We wonder If Hitler really believes any Britisher would prefer Nazi rule to Demo• cracy. 'Surely :he must be hard Pressed for an excuse for his failure to make such a suggestion. Canada and the United States have demons- trated to the world for over a hun- dred years the unbouned confidence each has in the other, by the fact that we have as a border between the two countries merely an "imaginary line" not a single military 'fort or "barbed wire barb. cede" separates us. True we are separate nations, have our own governments, have tariffs etc,, and perhaps have ideals pgrucliar to our own different views, but we are ail one continent and live very much the same kind of life., Canada is part of the British Empire therefore the bonds of friendsmp nesween us and the States is shared by the whole Empire. We think Hitler will have a hard time to break down mutual friendship. The fact that the United State' does not declare war on Germany can be little consolation to him. Actual war by the Slates would snake very little difference, at pres- ent at least as the Empire has sup- plied all the men that can be used. We need moat of all the moral support of a nation with such a tremendous manufacturing power to supply war machinery or all kinds so vitally necessary, There is no use denying the fact that air raids must have damaged some of Britain's great plants and In sone measure slackened production over there, for • it is impossible for nation to carry on just the same under such condi- tions. Their task just now is to protect their shares, keep up cony - age and prepare for the offensive that will surely come. And so our Empire is proud to have a friend and Wednesday, October 23rd, 9;940 neighbour who is ready to give std when most needed, despite Httler's propaganda. —x— Pte. Glean J. "Certainly," said the barber, "but would you mind taking your hat on' first?" The customer hurriedly removed his hat, "I'm sorry," he apologized as he looked around, "I didn't know there was a lady present." F.
