DID YOC EVER
WONDER ?
WHY EVERGREENS ARE
EVER GREEN
It is often scource of wonderment
..,why some trees are able to keep
leaves apparently for the whole year,
while other varieties shed their
leaves in winter, It will be found
that the trees which succeed in re -
retaining their leaves are the ones
which are equipped to get along
with a very limited amount of water
when water is scarce.
Trees give off most of their water
through their leaves. In genera], the
greater the surface area et the leaf,
the faster the water is given off. A
comparison of the slender needles or
the pine (the needles being a modi-
fied form of leaf) and the broad
_leaves: of the maple, offers an exam-
ple of he contrast between the
"haves" and ''have note" in the mat-
ter of winter leaves.
There are some trees with leaves
of considerable area which are,
nevertheless, evergreen. Examples
are Lound in the holly and rhod-
dendrom In, such eases the expla-
nation lies in the character, rather
,than the amount of the leaf surface
Looking closely at say: the holly
leaf, we see that its surface 3s ap
apparently covered wit wax. Waxed
paper is an illustration of the fact
that moisture does not peas readily
through a waxed surface.
Another trick of evergreen trees
by means of which they limit the
'nater ions is to have the stomata,
or breathintgepores, sunken so that
they are not so readily ...accessible
to the wind which weula hasten
transpiration.
The term "evergreen" ie some-
times thought to refer to any tree
with cbnes and needles --conifers,
However, not all conifers are ever-
green,s, nor are alt evergreens coni-
fers. To illustrate. The tamarack
and other larch trees have needles
and Colles, but shed them when
winter comes; while the leafy laurel
tree is evergreen.
An evergreen ree aiwyas appears
green, but it does not wear its same
leave forever. Some old leaves drop
off and new ones appear from time
to time, but there never is a period
during which all the leaves are gone.
