x THE GARDEN *
* * * * * * * * * *
Not even in pit painting is it pos-
sible to get the range of color of-
fered any amateur gardener ini a
few ten-cen4, packets of flower seeds.
1st is this infinite variety plus the
setisfaetion of creative work which
makes gardening so fascinating,
There are varying !ruts Impossible
to describe, there are different tax -
tuxes, htIglnts, reasons of blooming.
Iu the tiniest plOt one can have an
enormous range. ,By adding a few
stones and easing up on the 'hose,
in one corner one map have a rock
garden; by excavating a hole, lining
with conoerete or by merely .sinking
u, crook flush with the surface of
the soil, lo, we 'have a lily pool.
One can do wonders' -with • flowers
alone, but stall more amazing re-
sults will follow where we combine
flowers skilfully with grass, lading
walks, shrubbery and bits' of stone
work. In this combining, however,
we must take care not to reproduce
a jungle. Flowers and shrubbery
must not be so crowded that they
become spindly and weak.
Little towers must not be hidden
be' [tall things like full-size mari-
golds, cosmos or zinnias. Beds
must be so arranged that we. can
keep down weedls.and remove fad-
ing foliage. Above all, we must
remember that unless we are earn -
fat it is best'tto° use Et fair amount of
lawn as a fere loured t24r.. our ftow-
eaa, ;iaents as aLmnst" vital in
creating garden pictures. •
Good Seed
It is impossible to over -emphasize
the importahct of good seed. Other
factoes may be beyond control, but
the gardener has absolute check
over this foundation. Weather,
soil and location may be ideal, but
without good eeed, specially select-
ed to suit Canadian conditions, the
garden/ is going to be a failure.
Grass Likes Cool Weather
' 'Gees's, makes its most sapid
growth inthe cool weather of spring
and fall. Ott this account lawn
work of a new or repair nature
should be carried out Just as HOOD-
an
oonan the soil is fit to work.
Asher digging, int; ground should
be allowed to settle, for a few days
at last, and then levelled again. It
is advisable to, repeat this process
several times.,,.. The; $op•soil should
then be raked fine and on a windless
day tbt grass sown at a liberal rate,
once across and once lengthwise.
This double sowing insures. en even
distribution. It is always beat to
get a good mixture of high-quality
packaged seed glended by expert
Canadian seedmen. -

The Ontario Department pi Edu
cation is urging a special drive this
spring for improvement la the ap-
pearance of rural school grounds le
panitenlar. A survey made by
Chief Inspector V. le, Greer anti
Norman Davies., inspector of agri•
cultural classes, shows that of
5,722 schools only 1,4113 have lawns
mowed and trees, shrubs and
flower beds eared for; 2,500 bav,
trees and shrubs partially cared for
and the grass out ante several times
a year with a farm mower; 1,784
with grass and weeds'''seldom cut

While the School Asti and iteg
ulwtions make the `,s7;hoo1 board
responsible for the size'and general
care of the .grounds, Mr, D,avaes
points out that the . liegulatiwtts,
provide for a $15 to $00 range for
flowers, shrubs and bulbs widen
roust be planted by the pupils, under
the direction of the teacher and
may be included In, the agricultural
report as expenditure on which the
grant is paid. This is in schools
where agriculture is taught. The
school board pays this year but gets
the money back in next year's
grant, Mr. Davies explains.
In ungraded schools', the grant is
a refund, When the teacher has
no certificate la agriculture, the
amount is up to $15, but where the
teacher does hold a certificate, it is
up to $30. Mr. Davies Is emphatic
that all the work must be done by
the pupils. No school can hire wont
d me by outside help and still got
the grant, be states.
