Huron County Has
Provided Four
Provincial Premiers
By Victor Lauriston
in Lorton Free .Press
In the days immediately before
and. irmareddately after Confedera-
tion, Canadians took their politics
seriOnsly; but nowhere •did they
take •their politics more seriously
than in Huron County. It was a
county where Conservatives were
Tones ani. Liberals were Grits, not
merely during election. eamPeiglis

Deu,btresia this. political hatensitY
Was an outgrown of the predomin-
.antly ;Scotitis•h quality of •the early
settlers. Political principles were
deep-rooted and political arguments
were the expression of settled con-
victions:
Huron, as a result, seems to have
bred public men who not merely
fought hard for local political hon-
or, but transplanted, to distant poli-
tical field, inevitably won distinc-
tion.
It is doubtful for example, if any
other Ontario county has itihe dis-
tinction of having produced four
provincial premiers. Huron has done
just that.
The first of the quartette was a
man who, Bft years ago, played a big
part in thedevelopment of the
Welsh and' an eJen bigger part in
breaking 'the stranglehold which
the political arts of 'the unforget-
able "john A" had gained for the
Conservative party on federal
Thomas Greenway was a big fi-
gure in Huron political life even
before he emigrated to Manitoba,
In the late 70's or early 80's he
ser,Jed at least one term as an5 M.P.
for one of the Hurons, Later he
moved to Manitoba, where he em-
barkel in provincial politics, be-
came probinciel Liberal leader, and
ultimately, premier. In the latter
80'e he fought, successfully, in the
Legislature and the courts, to break
the railroad monopoly in the prairie
provinces. In the 90's his govern-
ment abolished Separate Schools;
thereby precipitating ithe contro-
versy between province and Domin-
ion which resulted in the Dowell
Government It em ed al Bill and
Laurier's victory in the federal elec-
tion of Ins.
'Curiously Greenways Govern-
ment in, Manitoba was the first of
tlhe numerous provincial Liberal
Governmentsto go down to defeat
after 1896, The provincial Conser-
vatives chose Hon. Hugh John Mac-
Donald, son ot the aid chieftain, as
their leader; and under this new

servative membership and relucing

members, Hie. transition to a fed-
eral portfolio foliated as a matter
of course ohen the Liberals came
into power at Ottawa in 193.
The fourth of the quartette Is
the doughty Hon. William Aberhart
who for the past five years had led
in Alberta, the firdt and so far
the only Social °Credit Government
in the Gritish Empire, or anywhere
else. Aberhart halls from Seeforth
and, however one may differ from
his political views, there is no room
for difference of opinion as to his
power of pensuasivenes.ts as a speak-
er or his astaiteness as a politician.

Political struggles in the old; con-
stituency of West Huron ultimately
became lieutenant -governor in. the
West. ,In the 80's. and early 90's,
Malcolm Colin, Cameron, was an out-
standing member of the Liberal op-
position at Ottawa. Usually he had
to fight hard for his seat, for he
was a critic old; Sir John was anx-
ious to retire to private life. In
1887, indeed, the late Robert Port-
er actually won West Huron for the
Conservatives. In 1891 Cameron
came back, to leteat Porter; only
to be unseated. •
For ;,the ensuing by-election, the
I Conservatives. nominated Hon. J. C.
Paterson 'minister of Militia, ;Who
had loot his North Assex seat in the
general election. The mid -winter
by-election campaign was closely
contested. Late on election night.
the Cameron supporters held a cele-
bration of their victory. Next morn -
lug some belated returns elected
Patterson. by 16 majority; and it
was the turo, of the Tories to cele-
brate.

Before the parliamentary term
ended, Patterson was appointed
lieutenant -governor of Manitoba. In
the ensuing by-eleotion •Cameron

That's Just As Certain As Any
You Ever Learned In School.
O
ANY FARMER who's going to, hold a pub-
lic auction sale should look upon the Post
as a partner in his enterprise.
O
He can furnish the property to sell. He
can supply an auctioneer. But he CAN'T
furnish the bidders --and he can't have a
sale without them.
That's where we come in. That's our job.
We'll GET him a CROWD—if he'll give us
half a chance.
We'll carry the news of his sale to other
farmers—not only his neighbors, but to
hundreds of other prospective bidders.
We'll do the job quicker, easier and cheoper
than anyone else in the world. After all,
we've been doing it for many years, and
we ought to know how by this time.
