Novem- - bar 8th has been brought to my at-,. tension, „In that issue your Mortis correspondent raises the gaestioni- "Is there a Lords Day Alliance now Or, are the Ten Command- ments especially the fourth one, forgotten and not respected, as it apneans that Sundayis now a day of much work, even to dehorning cattle on the sixth line." In reply, permit me to 'call the at tention of your readers to the fact that two Sunday laws are operative. in this ProvinceofOntario, One of these is the Pre -Confederation Upper Canada law of 1845, and the other is The Lord's Day Act 00 Canada, enacted by the Parliament of Canada in 1906,.and effective throughout the Dominion. Both • of these lawn forbid the doing of unnecessary 'work on Sundays, whether on the farm, in the store, the factory, or wherever commercial projects are involved. It would not require much inquiry to determine thatthe dehorning of cattle cannot be included! in the works of neces- sitp or mercy sept forth in. these Laws. The :xenon: b:l:ty for the en- forcement of. these Sunday laws, as with other laws associated with the Criminal Code at Canada or the provincial statutes, rests primarily upon the municipal or county police within their respective juris- dictions. It should not even be necessary for private citizens to lay complaints to secure effective action against persistent violators of .these laws'. The police have fold authority, and also reeponsibil- ity. to act on their own initiative whe:e viciation.s of law are involv- ed!, whether the offence be burglery, assault, etc,, or unnecessary Sun- day selling or labor, The Lord's Day Alliance continues` its services to the people of On- tario, and the other provinces of: Canada, in the promotion of a better understanding of Canadian Sunday laws; their recognition and enforce - met. Enquiries for information and literature addressed to our office at 642 'Confederation Life Building, Toronto, will be promptly 1 considered and given sympathetic reply. The values of the weekly day or freedcm from business and toil are fundamental to human welfare, and should receive general accep- ance without legal action.
