The eupreane need of the Domini !on• of Canada today is more mar - Rats but it 1s worth, while looking at ghat has actually been done. When threes things ,were distant dreams and hopes they seemed beyond aur reach, Now they have come to Pass: in is time, there- fore, that we: put a propea• value on the things which have happened. Cattle raising is one of the moat imporrtant phases of agriculture in Herron County, Since 1935 the following changes have taken place in the tariff on cattle entering the United States from Canada: Prior Under to new Ag - 1935. remelt Cattle weighing lees than 200 tbs (calves) Mc lb. 1' c Ib. Cattle weighing 700 lbs. or more, each (dairy cows) 3c lb. like lb. Cattle .weighing 700 or more, each not special- ly provided for 3c lb. 13 c lb. Not only has the rate been sub- sdantia11y out—In two categories, it has aotually been cut In• two, but the quota which we are allowed to export to the United States is now larger than it has ever been before. On calves the weight limit which is now 200 lbs, was dot merly 175 lbs. The old quota was 51,933 head. The new agreement allows export of 100,000 head, which is more than we have previously supplied to the United States mar- ket, There was formerly a quota of 20,000 on dairy cows. There is now no limit, On cattle 700 ibs. or over the old quota on the 1935 agreement was roughly 156;000 head, of which approximately 13% was taken by Mexico, allowing about 136,000 head for Canada. The new agree- ment calls for 225,000 head and, after the allowances to Mexico which comes, under the same quota, the balance available tor Canada le 194,000 head, probably substant- ially ubstantially more than we win be able to export this year. Total net marketings of Canadian tattle in. a year on all markets. is roughly 1,000,000 head. at has ex- ceeded' that snnbstantiaddy in two or three years when, through acaecltY of feed, there was abnotmrai selling. It is worth 'while considering what would happen to the Canad- ian market` if the American market were closed off by the former high rates of duty. The result would be cOngestlon on the Canadian market and a much lower price for live shock than we are now receiving. The supreme thing necessary for Canadian agriculture is' the ex- pansion of markets, the other es eenitial is the lowering of the cost of production. The movement now le in both •clireetiona. Three per cent will be cut oil the excise tax this year which means a lowering of talration. It means a reduction of the price we pay for the things the buY. .The &weeping cbttdatn- nation which is often uttered of parliament °Danes largely from failure to recagndze the substantial things that are being one as rapidly as possible with the supreme objeot of establishing !proves conditions in a very . un- stable world where danger of war altos affective actio,, Inoreaaingl7 difficult. Fair Directors ,Warned, Gambling Not Permitted Another warning to Ontario fall fairs that permit gambling and allow indecent and objectionable midway performances was sounded recently by Hon. P. M. Dewan, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, In a speech to the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies at their convention in Toronto. "Our fairs should not be circuses or sideshows,' 'he said, "There must be amusements for revenue Purpos- es, but objeotionable features must be elhninated. We're not going to stand for racketeering. 'Some of you didn't heed the 'warning last year. There w111 be no giants to tetra that allow gambling and indecent and objec- tionable shows." Grounds and buildings of some agricudrbura] societies were aro credit to them, the minister said, urging that societies should under- take the promotion o'{ beantiflcation on the rural areas and. the im,prove- mewt of fano home surroundings. IN THE GARDEN No Entrance Fee& Gardening is a universal hobby or recreation open to both sexes, to the old or young. Whether we live in the crowded city or out in the open country, in the south or up to the edge of the Ardtic circle, gard- ening is always possible. Only a few square yard],' Of soil are necessary for satisfying results. Even the apartment dweller with. a new hang- Ing angIng pots or window boxes is not barred. There are no entrance fees, and equipment, unlike gods or fishing costs only a dollar or two. Aspade or trowel or rake are all the tools necessary. Other equipment consists of a few paokets of seeds, perhaps a shrub or two. As our interest de- velops we canadd more plants and flowers. Rules are simple to master, the ordinary Canadian seed cata- logue 'supplying all the essential data. .As we 'become more ex- perienced we can adid to our garden library aniy Of the many excellent government ,gand'en 'bulletins that are available in any province of Canada, Intensive Gardens do the small vegetable garden ev- ery foot of space should count. Rows are narrow and as one vege- table is used another takes its place. Only the most productive things, are ,planted, like beans, raddieb, lettuce and spinach and also those which have a flavor all their anon when .taken from the garden at the door, In this category will be peas and corny never es sweet and fresh as when picked, (malted atud eaten within ae, hour, Smtatl vegetables like elttuce and radish require rows only 12 inches apart, :Beets, beans, carrots, peas and spinach need at least 15 inches between while potatoes, corn ,and staked tomatoes mast have a couple ad feet to :thirty inches, Space may be saved with the later type if something quick anaturing such as lettuce and' spinach are planted in between, The bigger things will not need the full room at first and by the time they do, the early crops will be out of the 'way, Tender vegetables are these which are grown quickly, therefore the experts tette their along with chemical fertilizer, cultivation and, 10 posalblo, water. On this account lawn work of a new ar repair nature should be carried out just as soon as the soil Is fit to work. - After digging the ground should be allowed to settle for a few days at least, ands then levelled again, It is advisable to relpea.t this process several times, The top soil should then be rafted fine and the grass sown at a liberal rate, once across and once lengthwise, This double sowing insures an, even distribution. Seed' is sown on a .day when there is n.o wind. For permanent lawns of deep green color and, fine texture, good quality package seed is advis- able, In covering the gardener is adivised to rake one way only and then firm the soil with a heavy roller oe pounder. Hot Beds A hot bee for starting garden seeds early is usually prepared in early March. It consists of a bed of fresh manure, which supplies the heat, about 18 inches deelp. On this two or time inches of line soil is pineed and after the bad has heated up and then cooled .down again (a mutter of three or Sour clays) the seed' Is aewer in rows a few incites, apart. Fertiizer Maintains Plant Food In soil lu a comparatively new country like Canadu where the land has not been cropped nearly as long as In some other pants of the world, fawners are learning that even the most fertile soil will peter out if nothing is done return, its fer- tility, The phut toed which the crops take out of the soil ,must be replaced, otherwise the land will produce poorer crops, stated Grant Pert, Plant Products, Division, Pro- dictdtiem Service, Dominion Depart - anent of Agriculture, in a recent ad- dress, ySolen•tisits ,nand not long ago that plant diet consists of a dozen, or more chemical eubstan, ces, end that sono of these chemical substances are required in, larger amounts than others, Nitrogen, pbosplIerelte, potash, calcium, Sulphur, and mag- nesium are known to be ,the grin. olpal Substances( of plant food, with nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash' as the meet important. In this regard, it is intermit:Mg to note tat lntmau food, while of different kinds, is composed of practically the same chemical substances as foods required by plant life. Also, human beings, like plants, 'thrive largely according to the food con- sumed and assimilated, and human tickets and plant riekeibs have much in common; both result in weakly and undernourished bodies. The fact that plant foods are con- susned with great rapidity in repeat- erly cropped: soils will ebplain why chemical r'eptilizer-, and natural fer- tilizers in: the form of manure give good results when used on almost any soil 00 garden or farm. 'To get these results the proper fertil- izer has to be used In the correct manner and inezeetive amounts, because different binds of plants tory in their toed requirements. For example, leafy planitis, such as lettuce and, cabbage, do better with a nabundence of nitrogen; turnips and tomatoes respond to an thane - mice of phosphoric acid,, and po- tatoes and other starch-fonming plants prefer an unusual amount of potash. This tendency of some kinds of plant life to require large amounts of different plant foods nnnst be taken into account, as also the. fact Chat sandy soils are Usually Short 00 all the pietist Riede and. need heavier applications of fertilizes than. do Mame and clays, These factors of soli fertility and crap requirements make It difficult for the average person. whe is unversed 1 de/title- ees and. their uses to cheese sissy from the wide range of fertilizer prodecta advertised for sole. I1 every buyer Of fertilizer obtained a copy of the recommendations, of the fertilier council from; his Pro- vincial Department of Agriculture, it would help him In, getting better , emit- from fertilizer. In, using fertilizer, it should be remembered that if farmyard man- ure can be obtained, its use should come first, as it not only Supplies- essential plant foods but other substances as well to promote plant growth and development. The idea bohemia of fertilization includes the - use et farmyard manure, plus the proper chemical fertilizers to bal- ance the plant food in the manure as required gy the different COPS and soils.
