glita.gainst V.D.
is a family affair ...
A Laughing couple, dodging showers
.11. of rice .. , fireside ... garden , . .
chubby babies . , .
These are scenes we know and like, be-
cause they're part of our lives ... because
they spell happiness . • . contentment.
But we know that these things don't "just
happen." They have td be worked for, lived
for. Protected, too, because of ever-present
dangers which may spoil them.
Venereal Disease is a spoiler. In a cold,
relentless way it can kill infants, rob the
home of its breadwinner, cripple, destroy.
These are not mere possibilities. THEY
HAPPEN , .. RIGHT HERE IN CANADA 1
But, these things should never happen.
They can be prevented.
Young men and women can safeguard their
future happiness together by making .tyrs
before marriage that V.D. will not blight their
plans. A medical examination, including a
blood test for syphilis, is a protection no
couple can afford to pass up.
The expectant mother, too, may know for
.rare that her baby will be all she dteamed'of.
Syphilis in the expectant mother rarely
shows outward signs, and it is no respecter
of persons. An early check-up by her doctor,
including ablood test, is a most essential,
yet simple, first step in protecting her baby's
health. •
Nor must the breadwinner neglect his
part. The security of the home depends upon
his ability to work regularly and efficiently.
Unsuspected syphilis, striking in middle
life, may make the head of the home unable
to provide for hisfamilyy>It is wise to KNOW
FOR SURE in time, Industrial medical exam-
inations should include a routine confidential
blood test
A blood test should not be looked upon
as something unusual. It should be regarded
for what it is .. a normal safeguard of
health, security and happiness.

How's This One
Knowing that the minister was
very fond of cherry brandy, one
of the church elders offered to
present him with a bottle on one
condition—that the pastor acknow•
ledge the gift in the church paper,
"Gladly," responded the good man,
When the church magazine came
out a few days later, the elder turn-
ed at once • to the "Appreciation"
column There he read:
"The minister extends thanks to
Elder Brown fon his glft of fruit and
the spirit in which it was given."
Lost Ration Books
An appeal to consumers to write
their names and addresses on the
cover and the stubs of coupon' sheets
in their food ration books has been
made by W. Harold McPhillips, fol-
lowing a survey which shows an
average of 600 persons lose, damage
Or have their ration hooks stolen
monthly in Western Ontario. Care-
lessness on the part of the shopper,
rather than theft by others, is res-
ponsible for the greatest number of
lost hooks, It was pointed out !.hat if
hooks had their pAper identification
marks they could`'Ne readily return•
ed to the owner, after they bad been
Melted up from store counters
where they were left by their
owners.

So far this year, Long Distance calling
almost 10 per cent. heavier than in 1943,
when toll calls set an all–time high.
So it is obvious why we must all continue to avail
needless Long Distance calls. Otherwise, 'messing
war business may be seriously delayed. And
such delays can cost lives!
Please make only necessary calls.
