THE METER
6 Is for Your Protection.
EVEN though your Hydro makes
electricity available to you in Ontario
at a very low cost, it is important that you
pay only for the amount of power that
you actually use. The electric meter on
duty in your home, is your protection
against paying for more than you
consume.
Every one of some 800,000 meters in
Ontario is tested and certified by a Dom,
Inion Government Inspector at regular
Intervals to assure complete accuracy:
Electric meters are among the finest of
jewelled precision instruments :: t as
constantly true es the finest watch:
For your protection, Hydro installs a
Separate meter, exclusively for your own
0
household. Having a ;meter of your own
is the only possible way to be sure that
you only pay for the electricity which you
use. Imagine buying food from a mer-
chant who weighs several people's orders
at the same time, and splits the cost
evenly regardless of the size of the
orders! You want your order weighed
individually when you buy food. When
you use electricity your meter assures
accurate individual measurement.
Low cost Hydro service in Ontario
offers amazing comforts and conven-
fences. For your protection ::: so that
you will pay for only the amount of
Hydro you actually use, a Government
Inspected Meter is installed for your own
household exclusively.

Clinton Paper
Changes Hands
The Clinton News-Re>drd has
changed hands. The new owners
are R. S. Atkey and II, L. Tomlin-
son. G. E. Hall who has bean the
i publisher since .October 1916 will
now live retired and will remain In
Clinton for the present at least. Mr.
Atkey becomes the new editor and
business manager. For the past
year he has been editor of the Daily,
Commercial News, Toronto. Mr.
Tomlinson who will act as plant
manager, has served as a staff
sergeant with the Canadian Army
for the past two and a half years.
Prior to that both had extensive
experience in weekly newspaper
field, the dormer as news editor and
the latter as assistant superintend-
ent of the Barrie Examiner, one of
Canada's best weekly newspapers.
The newspaper history of Clinton
goes back more than 80 years, John
Mennel, an old time prints- resid-
lug in Clinton, tells us that the first
paper published in Clinton was the
Confederate which was founded by
a man named Matheson. It was
purchased about 1865 by the late
Edmund Holmes. It is presumed
that this paper failed as in. 1867 Mr.
Holmes founded a paper nailed the
Clinton New Era. Mr. Holmes wa,s
the maternal grandfather of Mrs.
S, A. Sutter of this town. Succeed-
ing publishers ' od the "New Era"
were Robert Holmes, son of the
founder and J. L. Herr who sold
oat in, 1924 to G. E. Hall. who at
that time incorporated it with the
Clinton News,Reeord. This fact
is still noted in the News -Record's
masthead. 7n 1878 the Huron Rec-
ord was Bounded in Clinton by the
late Edward Floody, The Goderieh
News ceased publication in Goder-
ich and was printed, in Clinton
about 1881.82.,
The Record and the News were
amalgamated in 1882 under the
name of the News -Record and this
is still the .nfame of the weekly
paper. The first publishers of the
combined paper were Blakely and
Havill who were ..followed by White-
ly and Todd, and later by A. Id.
Todd, and then. at, the turn of the
century W. 3, Mitchell was publish-.
er. .At his death In 1916, 69. E. Hall
became the •owner and bas retained
this .ownership till the present
time. The original office of the
Huron Record was in Ontario st.
while the News -Record has been
for the past 50 years in the present
two-storey brick building on the
east side of Albert st. The plant of
the Nenv Era main its amalgamation
with the NewsRedord was 10.
