PICTURES FROM HOME
106
"'Wherever they are, our boys and girls in the Service want pictures from
home. Don't let them down.
RECENTLY a leading newspaper
conducted a survey of letters re-
ceived by fathers, mothers, wives,
.and sweethearts of those in the
armed forces to find out what they
'requested from home. The final
tabulation showed that pictures—
snapshots from home—topped the
list.
'The results of that survey are not
only interesting but mighty impor-
tant because a similar investigation
conducted in any part of the coun-
try would 'undoubtedly yield the
same information. So, wherever you
may live, remember to conserve
your film for taking pictures to send
to the boys and girls in the Sar-
vices.
There is still an acute shortage of
flim due to the vast amount needed
by the armed forces for x-ray work,
reconnaissance, and combat pic-
tures in addition to that which
plays such an important part in
aiding industry in war production.
Before taking a picture ask your-
self this question: 'Will this pic-
ture mean something to someone in
the Service?" If the answer is "No"
then don't take it. Under ordinary
-conditions when film Is plentiful, it
Is all right to enjoy your hobby to
the fullest extent but today I am
sure that everyone is willing to
forego the pleasure of taking un-
necessary pictures so that there
will be more (film available to those
who have friends or relatives in the
Services who would really get a
thrill from pictures from home.
If you do not have friends or rela-
tives in the armed forces to whom
you might send snapshots, you can
use at least part of your roll of film
to snap a picture or two for a neigh-
bor who may not have a camera.
Nowadays we must make every
snap of the shutter count. When
Picturing your friends and family,
the first thing to do is to select a
suitable setting. One of the most
common faults of the average snap-
shot is that it is made in poor sur-
roundings. The photographer may
unconsciously pose his subject in
the backyard with a background of
ash cans or some equally unattrac-
tive objects. Or he may choose the
front porch steps and find in the
finished picture that a post is pro-
truding from the subject's head.
That matter of background is
really important. An ideal back-
ground is the slay, as you have
noticed in many excellent pictures.
To achieve that •sky background,
try taking your picture from a low
angle rather than at the usual eye
level. And make it a habit to look
beyond—and in front—of your sub-
ject to make sore that no extra-
neous objects appear in your view-
finder that may detract iuperest
from your principal subject.
Space won't permit going into des
tails regarding the posing of your
subject but, to shorten a long story,
a relaxed, natural ,pose will yield
the most pleasing picture.

For tasty, nourishing and economical winter desserts, most Canadian housewives
will again do some preserving this year. . jams, jellies and all kinds of fresh fruits.
Sugar is still very scarce. We must continue to conserve our supplies.
This year, the allowance for home canning will be the same as in 1944—ten
pounds per person. Be sure to use your ration sparingly.
HOW TO GET SUGAR FOR CANNING
Instead of special home canning sugar coupons, twenty
extra preserves coupon's in Ration Book No 5 are being
made available for the purchase of sugar for canning.
These coupons are good fox half a pound of sugar each
or the stated value in commercial preserves, for they axe
the sante as any of your preserves coupons.
You may use any other valid preserves coupons to
purchase sugar, also at hall a pound each.
•No exchange is necessary. Your grocer will accept
any valid preserves coupons when you purchase sugar
for canning.
There are now only two kinds of coupons for sugar. The
regular sugar coupon, good for one pound of sugar, and
the preserves coupon, worth half a pound of sugar,
