The day is done, with darkness all around,
Upon my garden walk I stand.
In silence like an angel's flight,
The dew is falling on the land.
I walk along my garden path,
And now I bend o'er lilies fair.
"Consider them," the Master saith,
My garden is a house of prayer.

You've often watched the teller stamp
your cheque. Every day, in every branch of
every bank in Canada, cheques are being
scrutinized, stamped and recorded. During
the war years, this daily flow of cheques
through your bank has swollen to a torrent.
Deposit accounts are more numerous and
active than ever before. This increase re-
flects the tremendous activity of Canadian
life and business. Production, purchases
and payrolls have all reached record levels.
In addition, three-quarters of a million
men and women in the armed services must
get their pay, and their dependents receive
allowances regularly.
The handling of this wartime volume of
cheques is quite apart from numerous
special services which the banks have
undertaken—the delivery of millions of
Victory Bonds and the sale of countless
War Savings Certificates; ration coupon
banking; subsidy payments to producers;
foreign exchange operations.
Yet all this extra work has been carried.
out at a time when new help has had to be
trained to take the place of more than
$400 bank workers now in uniform.
