COAL IS SCARCE!—Wasting fuel by overheating
your home is unpatriotic. It has long been recognized
that moderate temperatures are better 'for the health.
To ensure comfort, get into warmer clothes rather than
pile on more fuel.
Tests show that for every degree over 68° coal
consumption is increased 3%. Keeping your home at
68° instead of 76° may save almost a quarter of your fuel.
Ask your local fuel dealer for your free copy of the book-
let "33 WAYS TO SAVE ONE TON IN FIVE" today.

INFORMAL PORTRAITS AT NIGHT 44
,nformal portraits like thls one are always welcomed by those in the
Service as well as by friends and relatives at-home. '
-THE most important requisite of
i• any informal portrait is that 19
he a good likeness. indeed, the very
word "portrait" means a likeness;
but it implies more than. that. It
suggests a portrayal which is natu-
ral and characteristic.
To obtain such personality studies,
You must do two things, First, ay
range your lights and camera- in
advance, so that you can snappic-
tures quickly and without a lot of
fuss. Second, make sure that your
NelbjeOt is at Case.
The simplest Way to have your
subjeel relax is to provide a cone -
fineable place to sit and something
to do.
Suppose you are shaking a picture
of you' sister, Porhtips It would be
host to show her, fairly close-up,
knitting, tee 1n the picture above,
'laving her knitting, or even glanc-
ing up from a book, will help her
feel at case, tints taking hoc atten•
tion, away from. the camera and

plow, about lighting indoors, The
placing of the lights must not be
1
extreme, for you don't want odd
lighting. effects in -these -pictures.
And, as previously . mentioned, the
lightsandcamera should be, in posi-
tion and all ready befere you place
your subject.
For informal portraits, the best
general lighting 18 the conventional
45 -degree -type (that is, the main
light at a height so that it may be
directed at that angle) which You
will find illustrated in any booklet
or leaflet on taking night snapshots.
Two lights: aro essential, and the
ones generally used, now that: regu-
lar .Hood bulbs are not available to •
the amateur, are a 100-watT and a
150 -watt home lighting bulb, One is
plated to the left of the camera;
one to the right, both pointing at
the subject. This pratittces a Widely
balanced lighting with no harsh or
extreme shadows. -
And don't forget that those in, the
Service like to receive informal por-
traits of menders of their family
and friends.
