L Nova, Scotia
Of the. three Maritimes, Nora
l;cotia is the richest, saltiest and
most populous. Except fora oar-
row neck of land which joins it to
the mainland, it is surrounded by
sea , Because Nova Scotia is
the most easterly province in Can -
tide, it was the first to feel the
seatless feet of the European ex-
plorers and so today it is the riclt-
itst In history. John Cabot planted
the English flag on Nova Scotia
live years after Columbus sighted
America .. ,
By 1624 the New World had- a
New Spain, a New England and a
New France. That year Jetties I
established an order of baronets to
help colonize Nova Scotia - New
Scotland. Meanwhile, on the same
peninsula -the French were building
a rich colony of their own, known
as Acadia.
As if things weren't complicated
enough, the first Scottish, and
:French settlers found Nova Scotia
Inhabited by a tribe of Micmacs
whose customs were at a rather
wide variance with those of the
Europeans. The local Indians ac-
complished the disquieting habit of
tying their hair up in back like
a schoolmarm and painting up their
laces like an over -age burlesque
queen.
The place names of Nova Scotia
with some equity reflect the Scot-
tish, the French and the Indian
influence, If you travel any distance
at all in Nova Scotia, you are bound
to run into Musquodoboit, an old
:Indian terns pronounced Mus-ko-
do-bit. Besides the plain ordinary
township by that name, there is
also ,Center Musquodoboit, Middle
:Musquodoboit, Lipper Musquodo-
boit, and Musquodoboit River
:which, as you might suspect, em -
ties into Musquodoboit Harbor, a
alteltered cove on the Atlantic, To
the Indians it meant '`rolling -out -
in -foam." There's also a Benin
:Bllreagh which is "beautiful hill"
in Gaelic, and a Belle Cote, which
means the sante in French. The
French found a little river and
named it Petite Riviere. The In-
dians found a big river and gave it
their word which was Siseibou .. .
A lot of Scots live proudly up in
Antigonish today, which, although
you can feel the burr, happens not
to be a Gaelic name, but Italian.
In Micmac it was short for "the -
places - where - branches - were -
torn -off -trees -by- bears - gathering
she touts," -From "Footloose in
Canada by Horace Sutton.

They Built A House
In Just 31/2 Hours
What is believed to be a world
record has been achieved by a team
of men at Santa Rosa, California,
where they built a house in 3 hours
39 mins., 10 secs. The house has
two bedrooms, a yard, a garden,
and all conveniences.. And three
minutes after it had been com-
pleted a local beauty queen entered
the house, tried the shower, and
found that it worked perfectly
The Wren's foreman started them
lvoridng with a whistle and they
were timed with a stop -watch, All
their materials were ready in ad-
vance and cut to design. Local
people turned out to watch the
house go up between breakfast and
lunch-time,
The same teats of 200 sten built
a haus' a year ago in six and a
half hours. That effort was never
challenged by any other building
firm in the district, but ail the
work nen declared they could
eclipse their own rerard and have
new done So.

Stage Coach Day
While the economic importance
of the National Roach was carried
in its wagons, the glory and spec-
tacle of the road was the stage
coaches with their glealning side
panels. In their hey - day the
coaches whisked travelers from
Cumberland to Wheeling in twenty-
four hours, Under pressure they
could do better than that. The
two hundred twenty-two utiles from
Frederick to Wheeling were once
covered in less than twenty-four
hours to carry a special presiden-
tial message, and over one stretch
the stage reached an average ni
fifteen miles an hour.
The stages were operated he.
regular lines, carrying such names
as '`Good Tntent," "Peoples:" "Na-
tional Road" or 'Lucius Stockton's
popular "June Bug" litre. A jersey
man, Stockton was colorful and im-
perious, and struck a patrician note
as he raced over the road in his
private carriage, the "Flying Dutch-
man." In the early days of the
railroad, it was he who had chal-
lenged the locomotive with his
horse and buggy -and had won.
He was a superb driver and com-
manded the respect of those wyo
drove his stages.
Another titan of the road was
the giant six -foot -five Scotsman,
James Reeside, who habitually
wore a scarlet vest and tie, Called
"the land Admiral," Reeside ex-
panded his line to a total of four
hundred men and a thousand
horses, and branched our from the
National Road to haul the mail
from Philadelphia to New York
and other points, becoming the
largest mail contractor in the na-
tion.
Before the conning of the rail-
road a great lore had accumulated
around coaching, part of which is
presented in Thomas B. Searight's
Iiomcric recollection of The Old
Pike.
On the National Road coaching
never found the artistic expression
it evoked in England, where
Charles Dickens saw the nostalgia
of "past coachfulness: pictures of
coaches starting, arriving, changing
horses, coaches in the sunshine,
coaches in the snow, coaches in

Mexican -Grown Cortisone -Will the "miracle" hormone drug Cor-
tisone ever be plentiful and inexpensive? Above, a Mexican
laborer carries what scientists believe to be the answer, "Cabeza
de Negro," the root of a wild, poisonous plant. Synthetic Corti-
sone made from the vegetable source appears to be as effective
as the Cortisone derived from ox -bile being used at present in the
treatment of arthritis, critical burns and some types of cancer.
the wios, coaches in the nlist.and
rain, coaches in all circumstances
compatible with their triumph and
victory, but never in the act of
breaking down or 'overturning."
Coaching on the National Road
did create a small literature and
larger folklore. A skillful driver
was a joy to watch, and the young
and confident stage drivers of the
old pike were proud of their skill
as they rounded the sharp turns
of the mountain roads . , Color-
ful and widely known by name,
the stage drivers were as proud
and independent as ships' captains
and, while they could accept treats
front passengers, were indignant
when offered tips. ---From "The
Potomac," by Frederick Getheim.

Then, as a relief to the toiling
men comes the rush down the
slopes from Perpignan, on the
Spanish frontier,. to Cannes. From
there the riders go north into the
