Partner and I Lave been very
busy reading Louis Bronttield's lat-
est book, "Out of the Earth." It is
a book that requires a lot of con-
centration so don't let anyone
choose it for light reading. If, on
the other hand, yeu require food
for thought, here you have it.
But what revolutionary ideas in
regari to the care and feeding of
-,.i'-ideas, however, which
we, at Ginger Farts, have been
thinking for several years -but
which Mr. Bromfield has had more
opportunity to put into practice.
To be successful with livestock,
Mr. Bromfield asserts, you must
put yourself h1 the place of your
cows, pigs or chickens and figure
out what condi ions would contri-
bute mon to your comfort and
welfare. For instance, if you were
a cow, would you rather sleep
on straw -covered cement or on
warm deep litter in a loafing barn,
bearing in mind that, in zero wea-
ther, bedding on a centcnt floor
is 30 to 40 degrees loner than that
on a dirt floor. The sante applies
to pigs and chickens -which Mr.
Bromfield proves in his "Chicken
Litter Story." At Malabar Farm
they discovered the healthiest chick-
ens were "raised on deep litter,
fed cafeteria style, and provided
with plenty of mineral and organic
material. Big bunches of green
alfalfa were hung- up so the chick-
ens could pick at it at any time.
Access to fresh cow manure was
found to be the most effective
means to stop cannibalism among
hens and chickens. But the most
amazing Bromfield theory was that
scouring and disinfecting poultry
houses was detrimental to the health
of the chickens because, while the
disinfectant killed malignant germs
it also destroyed the beneficial bac-
teria necessary to the development
of mould and fungi, which, in turn,
create the germ -killing anti -biotics
-known to us as streptomycin and

penicillin, also \'itaniu B.12- -
lately discovered to be of the great-
est importance to the health of both
animals and people. Mr. Bromfield
hasn't touch use for commercial feed
-prefers to feed his poultry whole
oats and corn with access to hop-
pers containing meat scrips, oyster
shell ami minerals.
Having digested all this informa-
tion from "Out of the Earth" I
began to wonder ii the eggs from
Malabar Farm were sold commer-
cially. If they were it is nay goes;
most of the eggs would be graded
as Grade B or Grade C, because
hens fed as Mr. Bromfield suggests
would probably produce eggs with
dark yolks -and just try shipping
eggs with yolks any deeper in col-
our than a lemon and you get Grade
13 every tune. That is why commer-
cial feed is used so extensively;
Now for our own experience.
Most of the time our laying ]tens
are shut up and fed the modern
way. But in the spring when the
grass is fresh and green -and rich
in vitamins -we take lawn clip-
pings out to the hens. Bees around
a honey pot are not in it with the
way those biddies scramble for the
sweet, green grass. Because we
thought h was what they wanted
we kept feeding grass as long as
the liens would eat it. And what
happened? The hens were more act-
ive, looked better and laid better -
but the eggs had dark yolks and
were classed as Grade 13. Knowing
the reason, did we stop 'feeding
grass? We did not. We knew the
hens were more healthy and the
eggs more nutritious -so we just
took the loss. Another thing -in the
fall some of the hens would mope
and appear half sick. Any time
Partner found hens that way he
put them outside to roam at will.
And what was the first place they
headed for? The barnyard, no less,
and spent most of their time pick-
ing away at the manure pile, which,
Mr. Bromfield claims, is the main
source of Vitamin B,12 -essential
in the treatment of deficiency dis-
eases. So it it not surprising that
hens that were turned loose in-
variably recovered, What does it
all amount to? just this. The con-
sumer public, through egg -grading
propaganda, imagines that dark -
yolked eggs should be treated with
suspicion. Poultrymen, anxious to
please the public, concentrated on
light -yolk eggs. So the -housewife
buys eggs low in vitamin content
and then goes to the drugstore and
buys Vitamin capsules for her fain-
ily, Eggs should be graded for
freshness and blood -clots but it is
time this nonsense about dark -
yolked eggs was stopped.
T have nothing to say against
commercial feed but surely it can
be supplemented by natural vitamins
and minerals when available. One
might just as well say that because
garden produce can be bought in
cans it is unnecessary to eat raw
fruits and vegetables in season.
CARRYING ON
A doctor had an urgent call from
a man whose small son had swal-
lowed a fountain pen.
"All right," replied the doctor.
"I'11 come as soon as I can, What
are you doing about it in the mean-
time?"
"Olt," said the father, "in the
meantime I'm using a pencil,"
Things You Should
Know About Nylons
Tiow do you select your hose?
Do you buy by size and color, re-
gard'ess of the weight and gauge?
Thai's what most women do; ac-
cording to a recent survey.
Too often, when we complain
that our hose aren't hoiditi up, the
trouble is that we have bought too
sheer a lair for regular use. Many
times we buy what we sce dis-
played Without investigating their
wearing possibilities,
It's not fair to blame the manu-
facturer for hose that don't wear
well when the fault lies in our own
purchasing habits.
The first thing about good buy-
ing procedure for nylon stockings
is to understand the terms "gauge"
and "denier."
If you exaut:ne a pair of hose
carefully you'll notice there are
rows of stitches going around the
leg. The number of rosy- in every
inch and one-half is called gauge.
Compton gauge figures are 45, 48,
51. etc. That means there are 45,
48 attd 51 stitches ht one and one-
half inches around the' leg of the
stocking.
Denier refers to the weight of
a defin'te tenth of thread. The
larger the number, the heavier the
weight of the thread. Usually, the
heavier -weight thread will give bet-
ter wear than will the lighter
weights.
Stockings are made in weights
from 15 to 70 denier.
Fifteen denier is very sheer. It
is.a popular weight hose today,
and for that reason it is frequently
the hose on the display counters.
If you buy 15 -denier weight hose
and use them for every -day wear,
you probably wonder why' nylons
don't wear very well. '
Ffteen-denier thread with a 54
or 60 -gauge makes a very fine and
sheer stock'ng, but it should only
be worn for formal occasions.
Medium sheers range in weight
from 20 to 30 denier at 51 gauge.
Then there are the heavy sheers, 40
to 45, for service weight.
Maybe you'll want some of each
weight, but be sure you don't
wear 15 denier for housework,
Another thing that assures longer
wear for your stocking is to be
sure that you get the right size.
Nylon hose should be fitted a
half-size larger than should cotton
or rayon. If you wear 9f5 in rayon,
be sure that you buy size 10 in
nylon.
Nylon doesn't stretch like other
threads. This is especially true if
you wear open -toed shoes, which
add an extra strain on the toe of
the stocking,
Leg length is important in -buy-
ing stockings too. Too short ones
develop runs in a short time. If
you buy them too long, they are
generally folded under at the top
where the garter catches the mesh
of the weave below the ribbing.
Measure the pair that fits you
beat. and try to purchase that
length.
Give your hose good care after
yop buy then!. Wash them care-
fully after each time you wear
them. .Use lukewarm water with
mild soap flakes or detergents.
Hang- them carefully over a rack
to dry. When dry, fold them and
keep them in a snag -proof box or
a cellophane bag until they are
to be used,

is, in general, a thing of the past,
but the idea behind it is still with
us. At the Lenten Season, some
people by the personal sacrifice
of something very dear to then,
hope to gain favor with God. But
the favor of God cannot be bought.
Should my tears forever flow,
Should my zeal no languor know„
These for sin could not atone:
Thou must save, and Thou alone;
In my hand no price I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling."
God calls to repentance. "Cease

The place of worship, is not so
important as the spirit in which
we worship. Many approach God in
the time. of trouble, lie has invited
us to call upon Hint in such an

We can worship Him in singing.
As we do. our own hearts are bless-
