Overcoming Temptation
Matt. 4:8-11; John 6:15; Rom 13:-
12.14: 1 Cor, 10:12.13.
Memory Selection — Blessed
is the man that endnreth tempta-
tion: for when Ile is tried, he shall
receive the crown of life, which
the Lord hath promised to them
that love him. James 1:12.
There is 110 virtue in being good,
if one cannot be bad, Hence man
in his probation here is confront-
ed with good and evil. Indeed lie
has in his heart a predisposition to
evil inherited from his first parents.
But a powerful appeal for 01311 to
do the right is made by our Lord
Jesus Christ: Man's eternal destiny
is determined by the acceptance or
rejection of Jesus Christ here.
Temptation comes to man
through the lust of the flesh, the
lust of the eye, and the pride of
life. These three avenues are
illustrated in the temptations of
Eve and of Jesus. Eve saw that
the fruit was "good for food"
"pleasant to the eyes," and "to be
desired to make one- wise." Eve
yielded. To Jesus came the• temp-
tation to turn stones to bread when
Ile was hungry, to worship Satan
for the kingdoms of the n,,1111 and
their glory and to leap in ride
from the temple's pinnacle. Jesus
resisted the threefold temptation.
Then angels cause and nr.nistered
to Him.
Temptations Come to us rill t0 -
day. the appetites of the flesh—
hunger, thirst and sex are legiti-
mate bot they can be indulged
in a sinful fray. Paul exhorts, "Let
us walk honestly, as in the clay;
not in rioting and drunkenness,"
Alas, how much of it there ie today.
We are urged to put on the Lord
Jeetts Christ and make not pro-
vision for the flesh. tc, coffin its
lusts.
Becoming a Christian does not
eliminate temptation. Who suffer-
ed mare than Job? But he vowed,
"When Ide hath tried mc, 1 shall
come forth as gold." Job 23:10.
Sometimes the proving seems
more than 0(1e can bear. It is well
then; to remember that our tempta-
tion is not unique but is common
to man. "God is faithful, who will
not suffer you to be tempted above
that ye arc able: but will with the
temptation also make a way of
escape that ye may be able to bear
it." Christian, endure. Tee Lord
has a crown of life for you.

\yell, the year is surely speeding
away into the limbo of forgotten
yesterdays. Wonder why time pas-
ses so much quicker as we get
older? Steens just as if we were
travelling in a high-speed vehicle,
minus the brakes. And it is such
re pity to have these lovely trays go
hurrying by — frosty morning's,
bright sunny days — so different
front the weather that was handed
out during the time the ploughing.

You would think when so much

u•olld be a little more co-operative.
Bob was there on the Thursday

say that that was one event I had
never yet been to see. Bob told
Inc f wouldn't find anything there

Seems to me whenever a large

one place there is bound to be
something interesting ail t1(1 fine,
Maybe Sone of you ladies who do

sure that in our younger days if
Partner and I could have gone to
a ploughing matdt together we
would have had no trouble in find-

the would have had a good time
and found mulch that was challeng-

titne or opportunity to take in such
worthwhile events, Now we are

lfow much easier it is these days
for young farmers to. get away.
With our fast moving cars distance
is no obstacle. Most places are
accessible with a few hours driving.
And with hydro and milking mach-
ines on so matey farms it doesn't
take two or three hours to get the
chores done before and after the
trip. Certainly there is less help
041 farms now than at any time in
history — on the other hand less
help is needed. But 1 generalize
too much. Because we live in a
well -populated district, where pro-
bably 90% of the farmers have
hydro power and can thus make
use of tabour - saving convenien-
ces, I and afraid I sometimes for-
get that other more isolated dis-
tricts still depend on hand power
for most of their work, and coat -
oil lamps and lanterns as the only
means of illumination to lighten
their darkness. But foryotr conso-
lation let me remind you that the
more electrical equipment you have
around the more there is likely
to be mechanical trouble. 1f some-
thing goes wrong with. the milker
and, you suddenly have to mills by
hand it disorganizes your whole
day. Or if your electric washer
refuses to, function you feel it is
a major tragedy to finish your
washing by hand', And now the

That's another thing you don't have
to worry about.

A year ago Nobel lain -tate Dr,

thesis before the National Academy

Iron -nicker alloys sank to fora) the

Evidence that the earth was origi-
nally a sort•of plum pudding comes
Irons studies of the structure of
Mars, which is stilt thought to he a
mixture of metal and rocks, without
an iron core. Stony meteorites are
such mixtures.
The sinking iron gore of the earth
tends lo speed up the natation of the
earth, an effect which, says Dr,
Urey, is more than overcome by
the braking action of tidal friction.
Without assuming the acceieration
caused by tine sinking core and the
slowing down caused by tidal fric-
tion, certain acceterations of the
01111 and 1110011 i11 their orbits can-
not he satisfactorily explained. If.
T)r. limy is right, the study of
earthquake waves indicates that the
earth has not yet completely scp-
arated into an iron core and a stony
crust.
