After a lengthy illness, R, F.
Downing a widely and well known
resident of this community passed
away in Clinton General Hospital on
Tuesday morning, April 18101,
The 3rd son of John and Elizabeth
Downing, he was born in Lindsay,
Ont., afterwards living In Gndericb,
for few years before coming to
Brussels in 1887, being associated
with his father in the shoe business,
and np01r the death of his father
in partnership with his brother the
late Leonard Downing,
In 1948 he retired from business
on serennt of Iii health.
"Bob" as he was familiarly called
was very tnuclt interested in snorts
especially base -ball which he played
as a young man.
He was also a member of the Bowl-
ing Club, and the winner of many
trophies at the various tournaments
held in the district, and for several
years was a member of our school
board.
Funeral services were held from
his hate home, Mill St, E., on Thurs-
day afternoon; Rev, Andrew (Lane,
minister of the United Church, of
which the deceased was a regular
attendant, was in charge; and for
address tools as his text 2 Cor, 2: 1.4
and Tsa. 40:1. The Hymn "Take
my Ofe" requested by Mr. Downing
to he sung at the service was given
by Miss C. Hingston,
Left to mourn his loss and receive
the deep sympathy of the community
are his wife, the former Mayme
Cardiff, one slaughter Margaret (Mrs.
Ken. Tyreman), his grandson (Bobbie
Tyreman) and t'w'o sisters, the
Misses Elizabeth and Hattie Down-
ing who reside here.
His parents, and four brothers—
William, Leonard, Ephraim and Harry
predeceased him some years ago.
The Large number who gathered
to pay their last respects to a good
friend was a tribute to a fellow citi-
zen who had deserved the respect in
which he was held,

The bearers were Elston Cardiff,
Albert Cardiff,, Robert Bowman,
Herbert Sullivan, R. J. McLaucblin,
Harry Bolger.
The flowers were borne by Gerald
Gibson, Roy Cousins, Lorne Eekmier,
Wilfrid Willis, Albert Wood, Harry
Bolger.
Relatives and friends who attended
were from Ottawa, Toronto, Lakeside,

Farewell Sermon
Rev. (1 A. Milne spoke from the
text Sunday morning Matt. 10, verse
15, Whom say ye that I am, and
upon this rock I will build my church,
the church of to -day, must have its
salvation founded on the rock, and
the presence and splendor of Owl
brings man into the church, for thou
art Christ. the son of the living God;
an anthem was also sung by the
choir.
At the evening service 'Rev. Milne,
read from 10th Ohapt, of John ver. 0,
"1 am the door," continuing his talk
on the church and the great necessity
or consecrated people in the church
and the appalling number of those
who do not interest themselves in the
work. We have not too many church-
es to -clay, but we have too many that
do not attend. Large congregations
attended both'rnorning and evening
services. Rev. Mr. Milne thanked
every one in the community for their
kindness to him during his stay here.
A most beautiful solo was sung by
Miss June Work,
Huron Students Take Part
In Oratorical Competition
Sponsorea ny the Bluevale Women's
institute, the 4th Annual Oratorical
Contest was held in the community
hall Friday night with students from
Morris and Turnherry Township
schools competing for the R. E Mc-
Kinney Trophy.
Winner was Cavell Rotten, of
Morris Township, representing S, S.
No. 10, Miss Rattan won on her
topic "My First Trip to the C. N. D.
Other winners were Phyllis Hamilton,
of 5, S. No. 4, Bluevale, School;
Kenneth Holmes, of S. S. No, 6 Turn -
berry, and Bruce Robinson, S. S.
No. 8, Morris. Cloyne Higgins acted
as chairman for the occasion, and
judges were inspector J. H. Kincaid,
of Goderieh; Mrs, A. R. Du Val, and
W. T. Cruickshank, both of Wing -
ham.
Presentation of the McKinney Cup
to Miss Rattan was made by Sohn
W. Hanna, ML.A„ for Huron -Bruce.
During the evening special numbers
were contributed by: Doable Trio,
Bluevale School, piano 4eloe, Miss
M. MacDonald and Mrs, Alex Corri-
gan, vocal solo, Mr. Hoffman.

of the work accomplished by each

thou?" was the sermon subject in
the Milted Church, Sunday Morn-
ing April 23. A man's relationship
to God is the most important Question
of human life. The minister de-
clared. The morning anthem was,
"God is Love" by Beethoven.
in the evening the series on the
early chapters of Genesis was con-
tinued "The Great Secret" was the
subject, based on the story of Enoch.
Walling with God Is the secret of all
true and abiding greatness and of
eternal life is the theme of the story
of Enoch.

Scholarship and Award
Members of the Brussels Boys and
Girls Lions Club Band competing in
the brae and reed section of the
Huron County Music Festival in
Gocic•rieh on Tnesday attained
splrndid marks and. won acclaim and
ware, words of praise from the ad-
judicator, Frank K. Holton, of Brant-
ford for themselves and their in-
structor, Mr. A. C. Robinson. director
of the Brussels Lions Band,
Miss Joan Thomas was winner of
the County of Huron $25 Educational
Scholarship and Gerald Cardiff re-
ceived the $10. Special Award donated
by the Goderieh Bine Water Band to
the second prise winner of the Brass
and Reed solo class.
