Lane was hostess to the Friendship Circle for their April 5th meeting, The theme centred around Easter, and after:the devotional ser- vice and the reading of the 'usual reports, Betty Cousins and Jean Cardiff favoured the Circle with an Easter duet which was well received. Mrs. A. McTaggart gave the topic from "Growing with the years" and a brief business period followed. The meeting closed with the Mizaph bene- diction. Mrs. Cardiff than con ducted ei very good contest and lunch was served by some of the ladies in charge. It's about time that some challenged the tyranny that alcohol has imposed on. society. intoxicating beverages have demoral- ized too many social gatherings turning them into load and loose drinking sprees, It would go a long way towards the solving of the pro- blem of alcoholism if all social gatherings in high places were non alcoholic. DIED DOWNING—In Clinton hospital on Tuesday, April 18th, 1950, Richard Frederick Downing, in his 77th year. Funeral will be held from his late residence Mill St., Brussels on Thursday, April 20th, 1950. Ser- vice at 2 p. m. Interment in Brim- ' sels Cemetery. The Majestic Women's Institute met in the Brussels Public Library on Thursday afternoon, April 18111, with the new president, Mrs. R. W. Stephens in the cbair, The meeting opened by singing the Institute Ode followed by re- peating the Mary Stewart Coiled, Roll Call was answered by a honeehold hint. New members were asked for and some mined. Three members had perfect attendance last year Mrs, Lloyd Alcock, Mrs. Oliver Ilemingway and Mrs, J. Maier, Gifts from the Sunshine convener, Miss Beth Hoover, were given to these mem- bers. • The minutes wore read by the secretary, Mrs. John G. Speer. These were approved as read. The treasurer's report was given and it showed a balance. Kerr were named to get an estimate on the re -decoration of the east room. Mrs. James Bryans reported on the Girls' project. Mrs. Cudmore, reporting for the Finance Committee, presented some new ideas, for making money. It was decided that a Euchre and Five Hundred party be held on Friday, April 21st, to be followed by lunch. It was decided to send two dele- gates to Guelph to hear Mrs. Saler report on Agriculture and Canadian Industry and Citizenship and Educat- ion. It was decided to have the accounts of the Tweedsmuir Book typed. Community singing was led by Mrs. Charles Davis. The current events were given by Mrs. Archie Engel. OBITUARY Mrs. John Grasby Brussels Export Packers Pollee announced Sunday that a man apprehended in North Bay is being" held for questioning in t.hr 41500. robbery from the 'Export l'aekers here. The theft of the money from the cash drawer of the office was dis- covered by the manager of the plant, Caries Doll, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Mr. Doll investi- sealed when he discovered that the keys of the business office were missing from his pocket, also mis- sine were his cigarettes, lighter and a 501911 cern of money. Police consider it likely that entry was made with the keys stolen from the Home of Mr. Doll earlier in the night, for there was no sign of forcible entry. The investigation is being conduct- ed by Provincial Constables Helmer Snell, of Seaforth, and Charles Salter. of Wingham. Brussels Resident Dies in Michigan Word has been received here of the deathof Mrs. George Manners, a resident of Brussels for many years, Her death oceured Monday, April 17th in the Stockbridge, Mich„ hospital, The late Mrs. Manners went to Munith, Mich., last fall to.p ,end the winter with her sister. A life long resident of this com- munity in the person of Mrs, John Grasy, Passed awlay at the home of her daughter Mrs, John Riley, 2nd con, of Grey Twp„ late Monday evening, April 10th, from, a heart condition suffered 10 days ago. Mrs. Granby was born on the 3rd of Morris on May 8th, 1868, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mrs. Brydges. In 1891 she married John Granby who predeceased her 16 years ago. There is left to mourn her loss one son Thos, of Morris and four daugh- ters (Mae) Mrs, Russell Bradshaw, (Fannie) Mrs, John Riley (Myrtle) Mrs, Charles Nicholson (Marjorie) , Mrs. Clarence Johnston, one child died in infancy. There are also 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and one slater, Mrs, Thos. Shoe - bottom, BelgraVe. The funereal was conducted from the home of her sondnlaw John Riley on Thursday, April 13th, nt 2 o'clock, The Rev. Kerr Anglican minister ot Brussels„ conducting the service, Interment being in Bran- don cemetery, Belgrave. Pallbearers were Jas. Phelan, Jack McNichol, Andrew McNichol, Wes. Jermyn, Ralph Shaw and Prank Shaw. Plower bearers were 8 grandsons: Harvey DDradahaW, Gordon N1ch010n4 ten Johnston and Lawrence Plant.
