H. Kortright, president, "Indications are that this y'ear's shot( will be even bigger and bet- ter than our two previous shows," Mr. Iiortriglit stated. In addition there will be the largest Twat and marine show ever held in Canada, a • cottage show, a unique tropical exhibit, a motor show, an authen- tic Indian village and an expan- sive woodland exhibit of live ani- mals, birds and fish. Twice daily a thrilling stage and tank chow, with 11 of the finest acts available on this continent, will be presented in the arena. The highlight of this phase of the Sportsmen's Show will, undoubt- edly, be Sharkey, the sensational trained seal with c obat c, mur si- cal cal and juggling champion- ship include retrieving dogs, P ship casting, trick and comedy diving, canoe tilting, log rolling, roller skating, table tennis and other exciting acts. Black Ice It -was Benjamin Franklin who first show'e'd that cloths of different color absorb heat in different amounts. He spread the cloths on snow. Under a black `cloth snow melted most rapidly. Scientists at Armour Research Foundation, co- operating with the Coast Guard, have decided that the principle eive can be applied to keep frozens and lakes open and so lengthen the 1 shipping season. A black coating of powder or liquid is to be spread on the surface of the ice. Probably a suitable material can be found among industrial waste products. End Of The Road—This Nome rests precariously on the edge of a huge crater after a freakish landslide wiped out 50 meet t of highway at Brecksville, ruining a highway dopart building and warping railroad tracks. 111 MID 1 Ro T "Nice, thick, juicy beef-steaks— thrown away." Doesn't seem to make sense, does it? Yet that's what's actually happening, every day in the year—and YOU, if you raise cattle for market, may be one of those who are *doing it. I don't need to tell you that steaks come front the very best part of a steer's carcass. But per- haps you didn't know, or have for- gotten, that it's the best meat on a steer that is bruised oltenest by careless handling. * Here are sortie figures that might • be worth studying. Over 15 thou- sand cattle were examined an SEVENTYOF CENT PER -ONE THE BRUISES WERE FOUND ON THE BEST, MOST EX- PENSIVE CUTS. There were 136 'bruised chucks: 38 bruised shanks: 15 bruised flanks: 93 bruised rounds: 106 990— COUNTY HEM! W BRUISED LOINS. For years the softball people have been trying to get fans and sports writers to speak of the game as "fastfall" but they don't seem to be making very much progress. But even if the new name isn't doing so, the game it- self appears to be progressing by —to coin a phrase—leaps and boands. There are even those who believe that, before too long, it will be more universally played than soccer football or even crap - shooting. * 5 * For softball is now being popu- larized on three different contin- ents, largely through the example and efforts of merchant seamen who operate freighters and pas- senger ships manned by the Sea- farers International Union. These shipboard teams, accord- ing to John Bunker, are regularly playing with local aggrebations in such widely separated points as Mombassa, East Africa, and Baie Comeau, on the Gulf of St. Law- rence. Business Success Not Magic Or Luck The Jeremiads and the people who want our system to fail are -very busy these days trying to find signs of trouble ahead. Business failures are one index which they pounce upon with satisfaction. Business failures have been in- creasing in recent years. Dun & Bradstreet report 596 failures last year with liabilities of over $17 millions. Unhappy and wasteful as that record is. it is insignificant compared with the 1922 record of 3,695 failures for $78 millions. The Socialist and the economic Illiterates generally believe that the record of business failures con- firms their notion that the day of opportunity is past; that some- body somewhere is conspiring to withhold credit; to crush out the small man and the new enterprise; that employers. all, are unworthy exploiters, beneficiaries of a con• spiracy atainst "the common man.' .Actually, of course, the i,usiness failure, figures prove prertsely noth- ing ni the kind. They show that the door of opportunity ito rto, start the busi- ness still swings year some 35,1101) new names went onto Dun & Bradstreet hooks in Canada, These and the failure tig- n . a that the banks s are t re. how, 00 t •v s pretty ready to loan [none-, some of which they know they are going to lose, .\ni the reasons why business fails are very instructive. Almost half the failures were tour to in- competence," About 38 per cent were due to "lack of experience." Every one of those 596 failures last year was a personal tragedy for the man or woman who launched a dream ship. Certainly it was a personal disaster to the peopl they employed and who lost their jobs. That is something the enemies _ of the businessman should remam- ber. Starting a business, keeping, it going and makin it' pay, demands as the failure report reveals, real Conli.••tence and real experience. Creating a successful business is Rat a„t exercise in magic, 'rhe' successful business is a monument to somebody's talent, brains and devotion. It is the pro - (Weer of goode and services which, to survive. it must supply at .prices the comnutnity..is willing to pay. It le the provider of employment for those who have not started their own business. The people who harass, berate, belittle and try to hamstring the melt who have succeeded in build- ing and maintaining a businte organism mode, h, fare up the realities; interest among the local citizenry; but these ships stay such a short time in port that there has been little chance, so far, to organize this interest into horse -brew teams, * :x * Another active Torrid Zone soft- ball outfit represents the liner Porto Rico. In San Juan they play teams of locals at city NormandieHotel.and ° alsobook games with softballers from the Frances and Suzanne, freighters belonging to the same line. Getting nearer to hone there's the huge freighter Colabee, which packs newsprint from the Baie Comeau, on the Gulf of St. Law- rence, to New York City, At the end of the navigation season on the St. Lawrence the Colabee soft- baiiers donate their equipment to the Baie Comeau kids in order to spread interest in the sport among the French-Canadian children at thatisolated port. iso The whole toting started, they say, about four years ago when the S. S. SEA TARPON made a call at the Port of Beira, in East Africa. To pass the time away, teams re- presenting the ship's officers and crew played a hot game of soft- ball under an even hotter tropical sun; and although the onlooking -natives probably hadn't the slight- est idea of what it was all about, they were greatly interested, never- theless. Later in 1946 other slips started playing softball games at different spots on the African Coast and the following year a team from the S. S. Robin Licksley thought that it might be interesting tee organize some local talent, so as to have some real opposition on their regu- lar calls there. And thisone local team son developed ainto the Mom- bassa * e.* The innovation caught on to such an extent that now the Steam- ship Line furnishes uniforms balls, gloves, bats and other equipment for the crews of its ships, and softball has become so popular that the sailors have no trouble book- ing local competition at Durban, Capetown, Mombassa and other African ports. Good sized crowds attend the games, and the South African papers carry full accounts of what goes on. * * A somewhat similar league, If operates on o Il it that,P Ca u can you shipes of the Delta Line, plying between New Orleans and South American points. When there's no local competition available, officers andcraws play at the nearest open en field adjacent to the docks. These softball missionaries report that their battles invariably arouse keen kern •Ont The Colabee makes its s runs loaded, but as there is little or' no return freight. the northerly runs are made in ballast. And the Colabee team, at least so it claims, when heading north does its prac- tising in the big open spaces of the Number Two Hold. That, we should like to see. especially if the waves were running a hit high, down in the Gulf. "Okay, Boys, Bring on The Horse" A lucky boy is Nisei Chajkel, European DP, who arrived in New York along with 1350 other displaced persons. T h e Hebrew Immi- grant Aid So- ciety, whose emblem Nisei wears, made ar- rangements fot the boy and his parents to settle with relative;* * * * And the cause of most of those hip and loin bruises was rushing and crowding the cattle when they were being loaded. When a steer is crowded against the corner of an alley -way or load- ing chute, or beaten over the back with a club, it's those choice cuts that take the beating. Of course, your check takes a beating, too. As a producer, you pay freight rates and insurance pre- miums front which shipping claims are paid. Livestock buyers know they have to allow a certain per cent for losses front bruising. According to the Dominion Agri- cultural Bureau, singular appears to be the answer as one of the latest bulletins to and starts off like this: Oats is used more often than any other grain for feeding livestock in Canada. It is the most popular feed for horses, and is present in almost every dairy feed. Oats is also used to a great extent in rations for sheep, beef cattle and [poultry. The bulletin, which is titled OATS IN THE HOG RATION, continues as follows: The exa-ot place of oats in the hog ration is of special concern in areas where it is the most common home grown grain.
