The Brussels Post, 1949-11-23, Page 2Dreamt House For Stranded Arctic Airmen -The pneumatic Quonset hut above, made of cotton fabric coated with a low-temperature neoprene compound to withstand extreme cold, is expected to help save the lives of airmen forced down in the Arctic. The hut is draftproof, snowproof, waterproof, compact and easy to carry. It houses four men comfortably and can withstand 100 - mile -an -hour gales. It is bright orange in color, making it easy to spot from the air. A 10 -foot - long air duct on the sidewall and a four -foot canvas igloo -like entrance keep out icy blasts, butallow for ventilation. "A good name," according to pielomon, at leaet we hope it was lemon; "is rather to be chosen then great riches." And in the sports dodge it is of the utmost int - Dor -lance, as there a good name - ed at least a tag which takes the brie fancy -often leads to wide- ead fame and even great riches. * * * Men like Jack Dempsey, Ty VOW), Babe Ruth, Joe Louie and Louie Angel Flrpo had, of course, a certain amount of athletic talent *ad ability; even though, in the rase of the last mentioned, it was noway •a'bility to take ft. But in mite of that, the sorts cobblers o tagged them "The Manasea Ailauler," "The Georgia Peach," "The Bambino," "The Brown Bomber," and "The Wild Bull of 'the Pampas," assuredly helped no tie in planting them firmly in the public esteem. * * One of the most famous of these nicknames -one that is still well remembered, even after a quarter of a century has passed -wan bestowed by one of the best of all spores 'writers, not on a single athlete, but on a quartet of them. Just about the time a certain United States college football team, and especially Its four -man backfield, was making the sports headlines, a novel en- titled "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" was sweeping the country. (Reviewers of that day staid it was one of the greatest novels of all time," "A book that would live forever," and the like. We wonder if anchody ever reads it now). Anyway. the eminent Mr. Grant - land Rice saw an opportunity and grasped it. He dubbed the afore- mentioned quartet "The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame," and the name caught on big. And when the late Knute Rockne, then eoaah of the team, had the four of totem photographed aatrlde four huge draft horses, practically every paper south of the border, and a good percentage on this aide ae well, published the picture, and Notre Dame became the best known team in football. Even most • oI those who vividly remember "The Four Horsemen' se a unit have probably forgotten the names of those who composed it They were Elmer Layden, full- back and almost unstoppable when he got into full stride; Harry Stuhidreher, clever quarterback and passing genius; Sleepy Jinn Crowley and Don Miller, halves. * a * And here's the Thing that makes this foursome worth thinking about in these days when football, both here and in the United States, some to he running so largely to beef and brawn in wholesale quan- tities. Those four, who highlighted a team wh'lah lost only two games in three full seasons, pulled down the scales -when at their best -for a grand total of only 638 pounds, e * * That's right, Layden, the heaviest of the four, weighed 162; Stuhldre- her, 156; while Crowley and Miller balanced the beam at 160 each. As Arthur Daley recently pungently remarked, nowadays a high school coach would hardly give any one of them more than a passing glance. There should be some food for Witch Weigh -Four hundred years ago this scale at the little town of ()tidewater, Holland, was used for weighing suspected witches. If the suspect weighed less than normal ("light enough to travel on a broomstick") she was accused of witchcraft and tortured to death. If her weight was normal, she got a certifi- tate stating "I am not a witch." The old scale has been pre - Served intact for tourists to deb, thought in this on the part of a lot of our high school football coaches -and some of those in the upper brackets, too. In recent years, Ca- nadian football has so slavishly fol- lowed American trends that now it's almost impossible to recognize what was once, for our money, the beat and most thrilling of all games to watch, * * * Why, just the other Saturday when Bert Haigh, of Ottawa, cut loose the lengthy punt which finally ruined Argonauts' play-off chances, spectators and sports writers alike opoke as though it were something phenomenal. * * e It was a good punt, all right, long, well placed, and coming at the exact moment when it would do the most good -or harm, de- pending on who you were rooting for. But to those who recall hoot- ers of the calibre of Gordon South- am, Hughie Gall and a whole lot more we might mention, it was the kind of punt you expected to see several times per game, not just once or twice a season. * * * But what can you expert? Dur- ing the past couple of months, we have noticed at least 200 kids of from 12 to 17 practising, on various corner lots and vacant fields, the recondite art of heaving and catch- ing forward passes. During the same period, we have seen just one youth practising punting. And he was doing it all alone, with nobody even to shag his mints, let alone return then'. 41 So why not let's go the whole distance and make booting the ball -except on third down and inside your own 10 -yard line -strictly il- legal. _And at the sante time, it might be an idea to pass a law whereby any youth who scales less than, say 185, on reaching his 17511 birthday, would be told to turn in his pads and go play lawn tennis? Ghastly Relic Of "Bonnie Earl" Speaking in 'Radio Newsreel, James Fergusson, Keeper of the Records of Scotland, described some of she exhibits at the Royal Stuart Exhibition in Edinburgh: 'It is a wonderful collection of miscellaneous rarities, including pic- tures, embroideries, silver, glass, jewels, coins, weapons, books, toys, and relics of all sorts, The lenders include His Majesty the King, the Duke of Buccleuch, the Marquess of Bute, and many others, and the range of selection is very wide, al- most too wide. "A very large number are RHO - dated with the uncrowned Stuarts, Prince James Francis Edward) and Prince Charles Edward, and with the risings of 1715 and 1745. Other exhibits include fine portraits of King James IV, V, and VI, a silver casket which contains the notori- ous casket letters, used to incri- minate Mary Queen of Scots, and a handsome draughts and backgam- mon board which she is said to have given to Mary Seton-nne of the "Four Marys." 'I think the most memorable things in the exhibition are among those only remotely connected with the Stuarts. One is the sword said to have been given by King Robert Bruce to the "Good Sir James Douglas"; another is the Seton Armorial -a book of hand -colored coats of arms, containing also several portraits of Scottish kings and queens, dating from the late sixteenth century. This has never been shown in public before. 'Nor has one rather horrible relic - she oblong portrait of James Stuart, the Bonnie Earl of Murray, painted after his murder in 1592 as a melnorial and incentive to re- venge, and incribetl: "God revenge my cause," This portrait shows the Bonnie Karl life-size, full length, practically naked and covered with wounds, with his castle Donihristle blazing in the background. One is not surprihcd that the frame around it is fitted with folding door to hide ft from view. River Police On The Thames The funloue corps of Thames Police is 151 years old this year, and, to mark the event, a river pa- geant was reviewed by the Home Secretary and the Police Commis- sioner from the terrace of the House of Commons. The stain scene of the pageant was quite a thrilling one: adven- tures with river thieves of over 150 years ago. Boat -loads of university students dressed up as villians and 'cut- throats' had a gay tune, reminding spectators of the days when the owners of trading vessels were lucky if they got even half their precious cargoes safely to the warehouse. These students were dressed up to represent the various types of river rogues and thieves who flour- ished in the eighteen century. They had a slang of their own, in those days, and the names of their nefarious professions were as pic- turesquely villainous as their ap- pearance: 'night -plunderers,' for in- stance, and 'mud -larks' who prowled about at low water pretending to be beachcombers, but ready to re- ceive goods, dropped over the sides of the ships; and then there were the 'scuffle hunters,' whose methods were to start a fight on the quay- side to divert attention from the sneak -thieving that was going on. These and other villains, such as the long-aproned men whose clothes were full of special pockets for smuggling the stuff away, were dressed in the costumes of their time, in three -cornered hats, or stocking caps, in loose, calf -length trousers, or breeches and stockings, with cutlasses at their belts, and they passed up the river in convoy, followed closely by the colorful his- tory in pageant form, ae it were, of the Thames Police. First came a row -boat with two rowers and a surveyor -that was the beginning of the police force. They carried staves and cutlasses, and pistols were part of the boat's equipment. By 1810, almost the only alteration was that blunderbusses had been issued to the crew. The 1850 police boat had a lug sail and by that time the crew had developed a uniform headgear. The first steam -launch was intro- duced in 1885, with one little fun- nel and lamps not much brighter than candles. The latest boat received by the division has two-way wireless, which is on the same netivor' as the pa- trolling police cars, special appar- atus for use with artificial respira- tion, new types of stretchers for moving inured people, gear for dragging the river, and an engine giving fourteen knots. Nowadays, there are 195 river policemen, all told, recruited from land policemen with a special knowl- edge of ships and boats. Day and night, a patrol of eleven launches keeps watch on a thirty -mile stretch of the Thames. Why the Door Has No Handle Best known painting by the fa- mous English artist, Holman Hunt, is "The Light of the World," which shows Ohrist standing in a garden at midnight. He is holding a lantern in His left has' and His - right hand is knocking on a heavily -panelled door. An artcritic who was present when the picture was unveiled ap- proached Hunt and said: "Excuse me, Mr. Hunt, but surely you haven't finished the picture? That door has no handle." "That is the door to the human heart," Hunt replied. "It can be opened only from the inside." PORT IN A STORM Explaining that he had two wives and "just can't. stand it any more," a North Carolina man begged the local constable to put him in jail. The officer was kind enough to oblige.
