Recalls Pioneering
Days In District
Mfrs. Sarah Jane Henry, who Tues•
day celebrated her 90th birthday,
lived 95 years of her life without a
day off for illness or Injury. A
year ago she fell and broke her
hip and doctors told iter she would
have to go to hospital.
"1 said no," Mrs. Henry recalled
yesterday. "I told them that at
any age I 'could die at home just
as well as in hospital," Her will
Prevailed; site stayed home, and in
three months was up and about
again. She Is again back to her
routine of recent years, rising daily
at 7:30 a,m., and taking an active
part in the life of the household,
Mrs. Henry's memory is one of
the few remaining storehouses of
first-hand knowledge of pioneer
days in Grey township. Her father
came to the Ethel neighborhood
as a pioneer when she was 18
months old. Her father alnd two
older brothers went ahead to build
a shanty, while her another waited
in Milverton with the younger chil-
dren. Mrs. Henry can remember
the quilt that was hon; across the
shanty floor In to effort to keep
nett bile mosquitoes.
"We've stood at the back door
tots of times and seen as many as
Ove . wolves go by," Mrs. Henry
says, "1 can remember one day
T was on the road with my mother
when we saw a bear walking along
a log. My mother fold me to
stand still and keep quiet; then
