They lament the days of fights -to -the -finish, of ferocity, violence, whin contestants showed a stamina and the ability to withstand punishment, And, if that is true, we're very glad indeed that things have changed. After Battling Nelson, the shell of a once -great athlete with the durability traditional of those rugged days of sport, died in complete poverty, we dug into some ancient files to refresh our memory on some of the Durable Dane's major battles, particularly his long and vicious fight with Ad. Wolgast for the lightweight crown which Nelson then held. And in our search we came across a newspaper account of the fight, 'which reported that it was "one of the most gruesome, merciless, heart -throbbing, vicious battles of all time and although Wolgast won he would never be himself again." Nelson, so the story said, proved a punching bag for the young German from Cadillac Mich. "Nelson took a merci- less pounding and after the fight his body and face showed he had undergone a terrible ordeal." Nelson was declared loser by knockout in the 40th round. He was still on his feet, but blinded by his own blood, streaming down his face. And truly enough, as the writer forecast, Wolgast was never quite the same afterwards, He is now spending his "declining days in an insane asylum, living in the- hazy memories of his great days, and training for the "fight of tomorrow" that his punch -wrecked brain envisions. That was a fight, so we take It, typical of the era for which nostalgic fistic veterans sometimes mourn. Doubtless there were athletes of great courage in- those days, but not more so than today, in the fights of limited rounds, where the accent is on skill and speed, if less on the durability. Your comments and suggestions for this column will he welcomed by Elmer Ferguson, c/o Calvert House, 431 Yonge St., Toronto. Calvert DISTILLERS LIMITED AMHERSTRURO, ONTARIO Jack Johnson Wanted No Part Of Sam Many an oldtimer will tell you that Jack Johnson, first .Negro heavyweight champion of the world, was the cleverest of the champions, "Li'l Artha," as he wasknown, beat them all in his day. All, that is, except one, a stocky little man feared through- out fistiana as the famed "Boston Tar Baby," Sam Langford. Lang- ford, also a Negro, roamed the highways and". byways;,Meeting and beating the best men he could lure into the ring .with him. But he never could get Johnson to,agree to a title match. Some people 'called Sam the un- crowned ncrowned heavyweight champion of the world. Proud ,little Lang- ford wanted no empty honors. He yearned, instead, for a chance to win the crown in honest com- bat. He chased the champion up and down the land, hurling chal- lenge after challenge, but to no avail. "Li'l Artha" wanted no part: of him, simply refusing to make the match. As a matter of fact, champion Jack Johnson nev- er even met Sam Langford face to face — until one night in a Boston tavern frequented by the sporting gentry. Champion. Jack Johnson was standing at the bar surrounded by his admirers when Sam. Lang- ford came in and spotted him. The "Boston Tar Baby" waddled over to the bar. "Hello, John- ` son," he drawled. "I've been wanting to see you for a long, long time. I've got something I'd _;,'like to ask you." The excited and happy chat- ter of that packed saloplt-sudden- ly died away into silence. The men at the bar slowly edged away into silence, The men at the bar slowly edged away leav- ing .rblinson and `Langford 10- gether. "I've been chasing you a long • time,'Lwent on Langord. "YOu've rl. been ducking me right along. When are you going to fight me?" Jack Jackson, who feared no one, looked down at the little man. "I'm not bothering to fight you, Sam," he said. "There ain't nothing in it for me." With that, Johnson picked up his stick and gloves and started for the door. Bulky little Sam Langford planted himself direct- ly in the big nlan's path. "I'ni not looking for any money out of this," he said quietly, "I just' know .I can lick you,, that's all, and I want everybody in this room to hear me tell you 50 to your face. I've got a thousand dollars in my pocket. I'm going to leave it right here on the 'bar, You,and Irefill go down to .the cellar and have it out, once and .for all. Whoever comes up first "takes the money. In fact, you can have the thousand even if I peat you. You got to give me a crack at your title!" Jack Johnson grinned his gold- en smile and began to pull on his gloves. "Look, Sam," he said, "I 'got a new suit on and a new hat and silk shirt, I don't aim to mess them up. Besides, I don't need a thousand dollars. Out of my way, man, I'm leaving." With that flip remark, Jack Johnson' made for the door. Sam Langford turned to watch him leave, "Johnsons" he shouted af- ter the departing champion of the world. "You're scared of . me, 'that's .what! I want everybo,dy to hear that. You're scared to fight mel" Publicly humiliated as he was that night, Jack Johnson never did meet little Sam Langford in the ring for the title„ To this day, many still argue that the "Boston Tar Baby" would have become heavyweight champion of the world if given the chance. Un- fortunately /Or him, the closest he ever came to the title was in a Boston tavern trying to start a fight that never was fought. u,. Runaway Romance Of Long Ago When young Johnny Meldron fell in love with pretty Char- lotte Kelveson, thousands of complete strangers, inspired by news 0,1 their fierce devotion, helped them to stage a whirl- wind elopment. At first Papa Kelveson ass - proved of the Match, The Mel- dron farm adjoined his own es- tate, and Sir Anthony Kelveson knew he would be able *0 strengthen his financial status as a result of the marriage. One day, however, a messen- ger front London brought the dire news that Squire lVleldron had lost all his money. John conveyed the tidings to Char- lotte. "Money matters so little," she whispered. "You and I are rich in love."'Hardly were the weds out of her mouth, however, when Sir Anthony stamped into the room. Tie had already heard of Squire Meldo'n's misfortune. "How dare you come here— you beggared jackanapes!" he stormed, "You can go your own way to perdi-yion, but you take no kith and kin of mine. , ." Next ddy, Charlotte was rush- ed down to the sanctuary of an aunt in Devon. Those were the days — 150 years ago - of slow communi cation, of stage coaches, and written messages taken by hand. Meldron vainly attempted to discover where Charlotte had been taken. Yet, in the heart of Devon, Charlotte was equal to the occasion. To a villager she confided' the story of her love. "I tell you this," she said, "so that you may tell the next man. Make him feel its importance, as I have made you. Then per- . spade him to pass on this writ- ten message I give you, with this story, to the next man. You and I," she added, "will start a train of messages across Eng•. land." Sure enough, from lip to lip, 'her story was carried. Farming men walked miles 'through the night to "convey it to the next village. Local t r a de carriers swept the message on. Over 5,000 people, it is said, helped to pass on the story and message to John Meldron. it bore the address of his beloved— and at once he set out to her rescue. PLAIN HORSE SENSE .. By. BOB ELLIS Marketing in Britain. Under., the British "Agricul- tural Marketing Act, 1931," "a scheme, regulating the market- ing' of ran' agriioliltural product may be submitted by any per- sonswho 'satisfy the Minister that they are Substantially repre- sentative of.the persons who pro- duce that product in the area to which the scheme is applicable." Such application and the ',re- posed scheme is then published and objections and representa- tions can be made in writing to , the Minister. If the scheme is approved, the producers concerned have to register and a poll is taken to determinewhether the scheme shall remain in force. If two-thirds, of the registered producers actually voting on the pool are in favour, the scheme is instituted. Provision is also made that the producers favour- ing the scheme must be capable of producing not less than two- thirds of the regulated product. Amendment 1949 The act was amended in 1939, but is substantially the same. It vies again amended in 1949, particularly in the provisions eoncer'ning the composition of marketing boards set up under any such scheme. The act provides that "the to- tal number of members shall not be less than eight nor, unless for special reasons the Minister thinks fit to allow a greater num- ber, more than twenty-four." These members are to be elec- ted by registered producers or bodies elected•by Stich producers, The control of the marketing of the regulated product there- fore is in•the hands of the pre- ducers. To protect the public interest,, the trade and eonsumers, nen- producers are also on these boards, But they are in 3 min- ority. and the ,Aot says that "not nitre than one-fifth of the total number of members shall be persons appointed by the Min - later as,being persons who in Ma opinion are qualified for appoint - mot ashaving had experience and shown capacity in oOmmet'ett, finance, administration, public affairs or the organization of workers, or as being specially conversant with the interests of consumers of the regulated pro- duct." Powers of the Minister. To prevent any abuse of its powers by any board, the Min- ister may give by order direc- "tions, if e.g. the board would try to limit 'production or the num- ber of producers. Such - orders, however, are subject to the recommendations of a committee of investigation, if the board so requests, and the Minister shall not make any or- der until he has considered the report of the committee. Milk Marketing Board. A number of marketing boards have been established under this Act, among them a Milk Market- ing Board. This Board consists of 15 mem- bers freely elected by„ the pro- ducers and two members co- opted by the board with the ap- proval of the minister. The Board has general powers to regulate the marketing of milk, but -it also has the follow- ing powers: (1.) to buy milk; (2.) to produce from milk any of the following commodi- ties: cream, butter, buttermilk, cultured milk, evaporated and semi - evaporated buttermilk or cultured milk, milk sugar (lac- tose), cheese, whey preparations, milk powder, condensed Whole or. separated milk, casein, ice cream; (3) sell, grade, pack, store, adaptfor sale, insure advertise and 'transport milk or commodi- ties produced therefrom by the Board.
