CARDIFF SCORES VICTORY
1N NEW BIDING
Lewis Elston Cardiff, P. C., mens
her for the old Huron North Siding
in 1940, 1945 and 1949, was returned
Monday for his fourth term In the
House of Commons as the represent-
ative for the new Huron Riding. He
defeated Andrew Y. McLean, See
forth ,publisher, by 11,050 votes to
9.444 votes.
It was a hard fought contest stem-
ming from the fact that the old rid-
ing of Harron North, Cardiff`s riding
and Huron Perth, McLean's riding,
were merged in a redistribution of
House seats during the test pperil&
mentary sessions. Both men were
widely, known as able men, liked
and respected by their constituents,
Early summaries favoured Mr.
McLean hut later reports gave the
P. C. •candidate a growing lead. 13y
the time 140 polls were in, at about
10.30 p, m., the election was decidely
on Cardiff's side and the Liberal
workers conceded the election.
Mr. Cardiff, after results Were .
known on Monday night, said that
it wo'. a clean campaign and that
he had noticing but respect for the
way his opponent, Mr. McLean, con-
"
ducted his campaign. He attributed
one of the main reasons for his
victory to the fact that the voters
resented the way his former riding
was eliminated: and that it was a
Protest against the policy of the
Liberal Government for the fall in
farm prices and loss of overseas
markets for the things that Aaron
farmers produce.
Mr. McLean had difficulty reach-
ing his opponent to offer his eon-
gratulaticns on his victory. He had
tried to locate Mr, Cardiff by tele.
phone as soon as the swing became
obvious, but it was not until 2:00
n, 10.. that the two candidates name
together, to Seafnrth, to shake hands.
Tn their eoionrfal kilts, the Legion
Pipe Band of Mr. Cardiff's, home,
town. Brussels, provided the march.
ing music for the traditional victery
parade through the riding_. With his
inbiliant workers and supporters
forming a motorcade the parade be-
gan at Wingham proeeeddng to Brus-
sels, Myth, the county seat of God-
eridh, and to Clinton, Seaforth and
Exeter,
