Of his dt't,s. were the g1' Lrutl4erb, brown sltirt and yellow police b•'a• res. The little 111 d 11 , tV h O I S • known to thud- sands of reader for the above cha- racteristics of his person, was Gre- gory Clark, the famous Canadian writer. "Who is that you have out in the car?" he asked as I mounted' the steps. "Oh, that's Susie," I replied, "she came along for the ride," "Well bring her in. She can talk with the ladies of the house, while we are up in the den," And that is the Way our interview with Gregory Clark began, "Getting Into newspaper work to- day, is much harder than It was; when I first started," pointed out Mr, Clark, "There is far more com- petition, and daily newspapers to- day seem inclined to hire experi- enced newsmen; rather than n greenhorn, who wishes to start In and learn the business." At this point a green and white marble, fell front his pocket and rolled across the hardwood floor. Recovering it, he explained: "We have numerous cats around here, that pester my birds. I have a sling -shot and stand on the back steps and fire at then'. I haven't hit .anything yet, but I've seared the old heck out o cats." a lot of cat.. " "What do you advise a young person, who is inter( ted in getting .into newspaper work?" I asked. Greg looked me square in the eye before answering. "My advice is 1 • start at the bottom— ..n a country weekly. \Vct'k hard at the job; and some day When your chance comes to work on a big newspaper—work harder than ever. Move heaven and earth to get the job, and at least you are started on the way." And -that me friendlies is the ad- vice of one of Canada's top-rank- ing newsmen, who knows that It is no easy job to get to the top of the ladder in the newspaper pro- fession. "Now about you and Jinn Frise, the cartoonist. Do any of the stor- ies you write, ever really happen?" I inquired, "Tire most of then develop from actual experiences of Jim and I", Greg itforuled le. "\\`e have hunt- ed, fished and chummed around to- gether for 80 years. We started out together as cub reporter and cub artist, and although we are 1- mulch alike in, OM* play -habits we have a few differences such as Jim's preferring duck hunting to my deer hunting and he like: billiards and the races, while I would either go for a wall: or drive in the country." "Does Jim actually live around the corner?" was our .,ext question. "He lived around the corner from Inc for about 15 years," replied Greg. "Tell me something •+bout the Greg -Jim stories. Where do you" get your ideas? I'low do you plat, a story? IHow many words are there in a Greg -Jim stogy, and how lung does it take to write one?" Greg took a deep breath, settled back in his easy chair and began the answers LO n1y questions. "In 20 years, I have travelled thousands of miles. I have talked to Wren, woolen and children in all walks of life, Hundreds of them have contributed sayings and themes for my stories and have never known it. I tell the story to :myself first, then Jim and . hold a story conference that he can get air idea for the illustration, which is very important. Clarke New nlgn prices—tomatoes, plums, peaches, pears, more to- matoes; baby baskets, Edna Jaques, a new calf, high winds and lots of rain—all that and plenty more belong to the chronicle of the week that has past—not to mention naming and training our new little kitten. Take those new high prices .. enough material there to fill- two or three columns, isn't there? The thing is what , are we going to do about then'? That's quite a problem, isn't it, because there is no real solution. Vs'e can help our- selves a little •by more careful shopping; by making more and buying less of what can be bought ready to wear or ready to eat, as the case may be. But it all means extra work for the housewife. Some have the time and energy— others have not. It is up to the individual. One thing is certain— sky-rocket prices inevitably lead to a lower standard of living. A dollar hill only buy so much and if the number of our dollars is limited the sixty-four dollar ques- tion is how t' budget those dollars to the best advantage. \Ve are trying out a few ways ourselves. For instance right now we have plenty of coal in the cellar. The weather has turned quite chilly and so a little heat is necessary. Then of coarse filling all the empty sealers is definitely a "must." Personally, I have been canning so fast and furious every day that I keep it up in my sleep at night. In between whiles I have also been trimming a bas- illette and baby llaslcet for a young mother -to -be. I finished it Saturday night and it did look so pretty. Lace -edged white mull frills over sky-blue angel skin with big pink satin bows as a final trim. Frills and linings \There everything could come off and be washed. Of course that ]meant a lot more work in the making but what's the good of timings around a baby that can't be washed? Thursday night I was still working at the cot 11•h ei' a friend phoned to ask if I was going to hear Edna Jaques who was lectur- ing in town that night. And it hall quite slipped my memory1 I was very tired and didn't feel Hutch like getting dressed but finally decide that if Edna Jaques could take time to address a small gathering of women then certain- ly we should take time out to hear ;,her. So -I collected my hat and gloves, called for' four other la- dies on the way., and spent a very enjoyable evening.' Edna Jaques spoke on her trip through the Alaska 1'Iighway. Of ''toursc her account of the"malty interesting elcIlc1•ieneeS That ante her way was ihterspc1sed by her Deady oil and humour. Incidentally Second Niece gave me two ''i•olumes of 1141114 Jaques p0eh18 during the summer; I took then' with int and she a,tlographed 'theta for time. ' No'w we COMM to the kilted, which, if you,, remember,. WAS without a name. I hadn'ti a notion what to call it but. Partner solved that little problem. \Vatching the 'vee thing at play one everting he snid-- "You know—we should call that kitten 'Whisky'!" "Whisky?" l exclaimed, com- pletely bewildered, "Su:'s," said Partner, "it's Mack and 'White, isn't it?" BEAUTY CONTEST winner of Glcncoo Fair with Clown, i ] f Leona ]fisher, llrardsville, won expenses paid trip to Windsor dsor contest next year offered by Mr. Simpson of Windsor. Sports — And One Thing or A; , other By FRANK MANN HARRIS ("A Sixbit Critic") FABLE (With ape/ogler to the late, great George .Ade). Once upon a time there was a Certain Province that had Very Liberal Sunday Laws. Whenever the Day of Rest rolled around John Citizen had his choice of attending church, ploughing up a golf coarse, sniffing the sweet aroma of burned gas„on the highways, stay- ing home and nagging the wife and kiddies, or attending church. If des- perate he could 'even listen to the radio. rut despite all this vast var- iety of entertainment, strange to say the Ingrate was still not satisfied. 4 * * So at last a group of High Minded Philanthropists decided they would clo something about it. They decided to send a Representative Delegation of Six to call on the Head Man of the Province; and included in this Representative Delegation were a Baseball Mogul, a Hockey Magnate, a Football I'romotel', a Roller Rink Proprietor, a Moving Picture Iln- pressario and a Sporls Reporter, the latter being taken along because the Taxicab held six anyway and there -wasn't any sense in toasting all That space. * ti. 4, The Bead Man of the Province received them most graciously and asked then, in his hest Chesterfield - hut manner, just what was biting them. So with one -accord they pro- ceeded to tell him .of the Terrible Sufferings of John Citizen under the Liberal Sunday Laws, hew their Soft Hearts bled for hint Day. and Night,. and, how something would have to he Done About It immediate- ly if not sooner. * * * At this ppint 11b• Sports Reporter ZM'nr heard to n'ltispry, "What a Pushover ttlis Egg turned out to be!". • ♦ * * Then the Head Man of the Prov- ince said to then', "Did I hear you gentlemen tell inc that, in malting this Request, you have only the Interests of John Citizen at heart and hatat no—if you will pardon the phrase—Ulterior Motive or Motives, such as Red. Propagancla, or Profits, or anything discreditable like that?" So one and all, singly, doubly and in concert, they asanrcd hila they were thinking solely of John Citizen. * * * "You do yourselves Very Great Credit,” said 111c Head Man of the Produce, "and I can sec that you are all I'Ligh Minded Philanthropists indeed! So with your•Assurance in mind I will immediately instruct—I clean,;of course, request—My Legis- lature •4.0 pass an Act loosening up nu' Liberal Sunday Laws still further; so that Ito15 John Citizen will be able to have the Healthful Recreation of Baseball, Football, 1[ockey, Moving Pictures and Roller Skating in addition to the Vast Var- iety of Entertainment already at his command, And 3011, gentlemen, in return *, * * Al this inn. -titre (7 Rreeee that fell Poultices of Mac a toilet,* pain, Wine ail coral, Ilan', quickly, no scar, 26c, 36c, 50c, $1.00. 'lr 1rI'/s4' $N'T as though it came direct from the Upper Arctic seemed to .sweep through the Reception Chamber, causing the Sports Reporter 10 try a.nd recall srIlere he had put his 11'inler Blanket for safe -keeping, and what it would cost to get it out. But the Head Man didn't appear to feel it, and continued -- 5 * at "You, gentlemen, in return will be, I and sure, Only Too Glad to do Your Share. Interested as you are only in the Welfare of John Citizen you would naturally be Loath to Profit in Any, Manner from the loos- ening of our Liberal. Sunday Laws, and would desire to work what is vulgarly known as For Free. So I shall instruct—I mean, of course, request—My Legislature to frame the New Act so that all mone- tary returns, such as adinission fees, etcetera, from any such new Sunday entertainments will be turned over, without deduction, In some Worthy Charity. As for you, Mr. Sports Reporter, I shall be pleased to make arrangements with your Esteemed Employer whereby any Emolument you might ordinarily receive for reporting such Sunday entertainment will be devoted to the sante Good Cause." * * But 110141' it was the Dead Mai of the Province who noticed (1 breeze— only this time it tens the wind made by the Delegation of Six taking it On the Lsni out of the Reception Chamber with the Sports Reporter three lengths in the lead."Why, whereverran they have gone so abruptly?" the Head ,Alan said to himself. "1 had so much more to say to them; and besides the Camera Alert. Hasn't got here to Record this Historic Mantel?! for Posterity!" Then a sudden thought came to hint. "I have it," said the (lead Man. "Those High Minded Philanthropists are So Happy about what they've etc- romtplishcd for John Citizen that MO' Inst can't wail to go and spread the Glad Tidings!" * * * MORAL: Ef1ty IN BEING HIGH MINDED /4 D 7NOUGbNITLL^'SS OF SELF IT'S EASY 7.O OVER PLA 3' O.VE'S'HAAT!
