Ambition. - (2)
The ambition to be tamou, is not
finite so 111Nui as the ambition to he
rich, but it also requires careful
thought. Milton spoke of - the love
1,t• fame as that lastinfirmity of
noble mind," it is really an infirmity
and not a high anibititl:l et ell. For
1110.,,1 of u3, however, tame 10 the
large sense does not came into our
reckoning at all, because we have
little or no chance of it. But we
know well what is meant by the
desire £or dietinetion within our own
circle, school distinction, distinction
in sport, civic distinction and power.
Many people like to read their own
names In the newspapers, and to
".cut a figure" In the community
which they live, and that is some-
times •1 great motive to induce
people to put a great deal of time
and trouble into public duties, the
work of councils and emnndttees.
We must not he too priggishly
critical of the incentive because
there is 0 good deal o1 it in most
,ie, us, ',Certainly most of us have a
great love of popularity. But ninthly
that is not the highest kind of
motive
i
and ( t can be a' very danger-
ous
angexous one, No servaat of mankind
would care to admit tent the love
of distinction or popularity was his
main motive. We should not. like
to believe that the great soldiers In
the war thought more of glory than
of duty, or that great scholar's think
more of flame than or truth, Ger
=army cur 'Lard spoke vary
straight words about the kind of
arson who does good in the world
imply in nrtler "to be seen by
len." That is not a high enough
nbition for people who call thesn-

the only 9111)111 n worthy of
Christians is the ambition to serve.
Even His disdples bad that strain
of ambition for personal honour and
power. But Jesus told them that
the only way to 11e great was to be
"everybody's servant." We have
