large flock of chickens through the

.ergo some 400 birds were taken and
one night recently I he robbers made a
second visit and pretty nearly cleaned
out the piece, leaving 07 chickens out
of a flock of 1000. The lose is a serious
one for Mr. Kidd ea there is not only
the direct loss but elate Lite less of a
year's time, as the flock cannot now
he replaced, If the nervy thieves van
be detected they should be severely
dealt with, so that such a dastardly

Newsy Letter from Pte. Elmer

DEAR MOTHER -Well here I am in
England being initiated into real sol-
diering and believe me it's a ilttle di1-
fereitfl'orn Canada regulation We
are stationed at Otterpool Camp,
Guildford, Eng. This Is a very pret.
ty place and we are enjoying real
good Summer time. We are 2 miles
frntn Dover' and only a little way from
the Ohannel. Just 80 rods -teem nut.
tent is Westingham Hangars, the
largest aerodrome in England. Mac-
hines fly from here to the front line of
trenches in 7 minutes.
We ore only 21. rniies from France
so we hear the big bombardments. It
is connton occurrence for zeppelins to
pass over dead on their raidiew tours,
For instance.a few days ago 16 baby-
killersdropped
killers passed along, a few
bombs near this camp and 10 miles
further on at Folkestone and succeed-
ed in killing 64 soldiers. No wonder
it needs 3 searchlights traversing the
sky trying to spot out the banana
splits.
Leaving further details aside for
the present I will proceed to tell you
about my little trip. 'We Iafb Triton -
to for the East Nifty 28tH, went on
board the Olympic at noon and re-
mained at Halifax (nail Saturday
night June 2nd whence we set sail,
bidding farewell to Canada. On the
morning of June 3rd we found 0009 -
selves speeding along midst a heavy
fog, dear the Grand Banks of New-
foundland, -the sea was calm but
Some of the .fellows felt a little queer
and their sickness started. This sea-
sickness is no joke for any one'con-
trarting It. For me it was amusing
as T was immune from attack and aid
not expeiience the "pleasant sensa-
tion." Then we began to realize we
were at the mercy of the mighty deep:
7,000 soldiers, Mr. Balfour, Lord Cun-
ciifl'e, the Governor General of Ber-
nmcla and their patties, housed in I•he
biggeet and fastest ship .afloat. The
Titanic, a sister to Olympic, depending
on her speed and her 6 inch gnus man-
ned by the best gunmen inthe navy
to save us from a watery grave, which
was laid out for us by the kind-heart-
ed Germans. Following Clay our cli-
lmate changed as we travelled South
near to the Bermudas. The weather
was fine and sunset scene was very
beautiful. A11 we saw was a few
whales and porpoises and a tramp
schootoe, N d s we travelled
i t ext 2 a
in several zig-zaggy ydirections bat
gradually Head North-east by East,
passing several tramp ships, one of
which was sinking and sending S. 0.
S. to us but we dtto'e not go to her aid
as 4 subs were after nue trail. Ae Lhey
could only travel 16 utiles an hour
and we were snaking 33 we beat then
out, this was enough evidence to chow
114 we were nearing the longer' zone.
\Vo.were then 800 miles from Ireland.
Thursday we were

The scenery in 'England is simply
grand as full Summer is on. Very
green bushy trees, high hills on which
are old castles, wildflowers every-
where, Nature is at her best and
Canada at her beet cannot be com-
pared to England for beauty. We
travelled on into Kent, the fruit
country and olitub out at Guilford at
11 a. m. with full kit for a 3 toile
march to Otterpool Isolation Camp.
Our reason for corning here is that
our ship was quarantined and when
our period of isolation is over. we will
proceed maybe to Shorncliffe 4 miles
from here. Thus ended the trip.
We mustn't throw away a crust of
bread oi' bone, as a slice of bread here
is tuppence (4 cents). You cannot get
a lunoheou for less than 8 shillings.
We are certainly on the verge of food
•'famine. A box from house to the
boys is oertudnly a God -send. I wish
the people in Canada could realize
what war means. Perhaps some day
they will awake to the fact. A good
live Conscription would be the best
thing that ever happened. When you
see women and children working here
and thousands just subsisting so hun-
gry that a hard biscuit is grabbed at
savagely and relished, and yet there
are hundreds at home in Canada to -
(ley enjoying life to the full, while
humanly speaking their brothers in
France and England are paying dear-
ly for their sport. Ave they genuine
men 2 I an: beginning to enjoy hard
tittles myself and I would down my-
self to shame for the rest of ley life if
I was not trying my best to help oar
brave boys on this side of the pond.
