Cheese king of Canada Passes
in Toronto
Alexander Ferguson MacLaren, ex -
member of Parliament, and founder
of the MacLaren Imperial Cheese
Company, died in the General Hos-
pital, Toronto, from kidney trouble
Wednesday of last week after a
lengthy illnese. He was 63 gem's of
age, and resided at 53 Bernard Avenue,
Toronto. Mr. MacLaren's health had
been failing for several years. Until
the war broke out he made annual
tripe to European health resorts in
an effort to regain vigor,
Although still a large shareholder
in the concern which he founded, the
late Mr. MacLaren many years ago
relinquished all active interest. Grad-
ually, as health declined, he also drop -
ed all his business i1 e teas connections. At
one time he was on the. directorate of
no less than 40 different coulpanies.

When he died1�he was director only of
the Trusts & Guarantee Company.
The late Mr. MacLaren was horn in
Lanark, Ont., of Scottish parents, and
had only a public school education.
Just previous to his marriage h1 1335
to Miss Janet ilIcLeod, Woodstock, he
established his business of cheese
manufacturing in Stratford. All his
associations from boyhood had been
with the dairying industry, but in the
cheese business he spared no effort to
get new knowledge upon every angle.
He believed there were better ways of
preparing cheese than in the hard
bulls and originated the idea of selling
soft cheese, The dairying industry
throughout the whole Dominion soon
knew him, and at one time he Held
the office of President of the Western
Ontario DaleyAssor.ialion, was
one of the judes of dairy products at
the \Vorld's lair iu Chicago in 1503.
At one time also ire was director of
the Canadian National Exhibition in
charge of the dairying branch, and
for some years was sole judge of dairy
products at Canada's biggest fair,
In politics Mr, I*IacLaren was a
Conservative and from 1806 to 1008 he
repr'esente'd the riding of North Perth
in the Federal Holum. In the general
election of NOS he was defeated by the
Liberal candidate, Dr. Rankin. He
was an enthusiastic curler, and was
a prominent member of the Ontario
Curling Association, He was also
well known in lawn bowling cireles.

MacLaren held membership in
only 011e city club, the Albany, but
he had hosts of personal friends in all
parts of the Dominion.
His widow and one son, Kenneth,
of the real estate firm of Robins, Ltd.,
survive. Funeral tools place Satur-
day.
