Waxer the Hydro radial becomes a reality the people will truly begin to live as far as comfort and convenience of travel is concerned. The development of the hydro power brings the day near- er. 'Fite Weekly Sun, usually very correct in its assertions, requires to brush up on its geog'epey as it places Howick town ship in a quartette of municipalities aur - rounding Seaforth, when itis not with- in 22 miles of that town. BASsaALL on the ice is one of the uew sports, People who have witness- ed a game says "It has all the other ice beaten to a frazzle". The 18 players are on skates and the game is almost Iden tical with the regular outdoor play. 1916 PROMISES to be a sweeper as far as the sale of motor cars is concerned. Almost every village bas from i to 5 agents 00 the warpath, Thebnzz•wagon is bounce to have its innings no matter what the price of gasoline. See tbe Brussels agents if you think of buying. QUEBEC bakers have raised the price of bread from 20 to 22 cents per loaf. How wicked we have been in even hint- ing that our bakers had not our best in- terests at heart. Those poor Quebec- kers will find it no easy matter to raise the "dough" at such aviation prices. Looxsas if the Hudson Bay railroad is a public work of extravagant expense -possibly $5o,000,000 -that may prove the biggest wbite elephant this Domin- ion ever knew, Surely money is not so plentiful that this road will be carried through to its terminal for a few months utility each year. We're agin it any- how. COLONEL LAVERGNE, the Quebec crank Nationalist, who befouled himself by bis unpatriotic utterances in Parliament, should not be permitted to wear bis uni- form 24 hours. It's a slander on Cana- da to permit bio to be associated with even respectable citizeusbip, Patriotism of bis ilk is of a very skim milk variety, The redeeming quality is that he has little or no influence. FsIEAv, March roto, is the date set apart in Manitoba for voting on the Pro- hibition referen lum. By way of facilita- ting the polling of a large vote a legal halt holiday fur that afternoon has been arranged for. While Manitoba parlia- mentarians have done a good many thicgs not worthy of copying we think they have set ac example on the temperance issue that Ontario legislators might follow witb good results. ORDINARY common sense should see the necessity of arranging some plan to prevent wasting bine at the January session of the County Councils white from 20 to 5o ballots are taken to decide who toc is occupy the Warden's py u s chair, Huron County sets a good ex ample in obviating such a condition by the political parties alternating in the Wardensbip and the person to be so honored ebosen by a caucus of the party entitled to the preferment. The plan bas worked well in Huron since its adoption a good many years ago. $540.000,000 is estimated as Canada's share of the war cost up to this time. It would not be an easy matter to guess what it will be by the time he titanic struggle comes to an end. Many a day will be required before it will be liqui• dated but Canada will see it through, The total casualties of the Nations em- broiled are said to be about 15,000.000. At the present there are 2t,000 000 under arms. M ilitatism bas the losses of men, 'money and property chalked up against it. To crush out the system is to benefit humanity by lifting a load in- tolerable to be borne, It is the burden that has weigbted down more than one Nation but we believe the end is near. How foolish the Temperance folk have been to imagine Prohibition of the liquor hamn would be a good thing. Last week the liquor party publisbed flaming advertisements denying the cor- rectness of the statements but there are lots of people who will be "silly" enough to go right on thinking that the more john Barleycorn is fenced in the better for the individual and the Nation, It's coming alt right and the larger the line-up of stalwarts be sooner its arrival will be heralded, The M. P. or M. P. P, who refuses to support Prubibitory legisla- tion or loads it up with handicaps will have a thorny path to travel wben be seeks're.eleetion. Many a man to -day sees the natspaw that has been made of the question in the past by both political parties and will have something to say before the next election on the subject, :++rerna MAilefthiA land ttiksh alta lead la the geetelou of granting lenlale selerage, 'tette aNdtepf:a sang e0 Caned'," whep the House passed the bill. Our women folly should have the privilege and responsibility of the franchise, They would use it with an intelligepce comparable with the so called sterner sex. Ie everybody who has enlisted were, as hesitant about donning the khaki as you have been where do you think the Huns would be today? Would they con- trol England and Canada do you think 1 This is Canada's war and, the Mother- land bas a just right to expect that every loyal sou, who possibly can do so, will fight for the greed old flag, We were never very favorable to conscription bug it is possibly the most tquitabie system after all. Now the recruits offering are those probably whose loyalty is the most easily stirred but under a compulsory plan everybody stands on a common level and are asked to do their share for the benefi, of the cause. Huron Bat talion has not half the number of men required yet. Be one of tbe 1200 in de- fence of the Empire. JuoutrG by the reports the most crooked gipsy horse trader could scarce ly do a meaner trick than some of the war deals in equines put through in Canada. For the good name of the Dominion a thorough investigation should be carried on and the t ig or little grafters should be taught that honesty is not only tbe best policy but the only policy. A lean who robs your house is a thief, and a lellow who clubs you and rifles your pockets is a highway mai lienee the dictionary should not be searched to find a soft name for the pol- troon who uses his position is the hour of the country's need to dishonestly fat- ten his pocketbook when the people at large are urged to sacrifice and service so that every patriotic cause and effort or ty ba generously fi'ianced, A fellow who will under such situations put through tite m an shady transactions is a back hearted skunk and unworthy of Ere name of a Canadian I' 's passing strange, however, to notice now mauy p irliamentarians and partisan writers are ready to buckle on the armor in de- fence of the '•fi,ecers" and endeavor to thwart what would ten 1 to a higher moral tole in public affairs. 'rbeir politics evidently weighs more thau t6 ounces to the pound- and the biggest shell they usually shout is "You're another." HURON COUNTY COUNCI! Robert W. Livingstone was ap- pointed Warden for the year 1016, the motion beiug introduced by J. W. Taylor and J. 0. Laithwaite. At the expiration of the necessary half hour and there being no other nominations, Mr, Livingstone took his seat and briefly thanked the members for the honor. A. letter, from W. H. Johnston, Sec- retary of the \Vest Huron Teacher's' Association, enclosed copy of resolu- tion passed by that body at the late meeting in Exeter, asking the County Council to appoint an Agricultural Representative for this County. There was also a letter from A. H. Doupe, Secretary of the South Huron Farmers' Institute asking for the ap- pointment of such an official, a resolu- tion having been passed at the annual meeting June 22nd. Mr. Doupe's let- ter says, "We think it would be to the advantage of the farmers of Huron Oounty, and when the cost of main- taining is only about 7 cents per 100 acres, there is no farmer in HuIOn County but would receive more than 7 cents worth of valuable information of benefit to farming interests." John F. Groves, Wingham, wrote stating that a resolution had been passed in the town Council of that town unanimously asking the Cnunty Council to make a liberal grant to the 161st battalion for the purpose of re- cruiting. Laithwaite, that the Council insure the lives of all who en- list in the 181st to the extent of $1,000 from the time they leave Canada till they return, or for the term of the war.
