UNCLE AND NEPHEW AT THE FRONT. -
A letter was received last week from
Brandon, Man., containing photos of S.
I. Halliday, and his nephew S. Halli-
day, jr., who left with a draft of
the 79th overseas Battalion, The
former was born at Brussels, being a
son of the late Thomas B. Halliday.
one of the pioneers of this locality.
Mr. Halliday'd mother, Esther Halli-
day, died 9 years ago in Brandon. His
wife and little daughters, Esther aged g
and Kate 5 years old, will continue to
reside in Brandon. The nephew was
born in Manitoba and has a half brother
at the front with the reinforcements of
the sand Batt. "Sam" sr• is remember-
ed in Brussels by the older folk.
HOWARD CLUFF APPOINTED. - Still
another of Stratford's young men bas
been honored by the Militia Department
and has received bis appointmeut to lead
a corps of gallant Canadians in the
European struggle. On Friday after-
noon Lieutenant Howard Cluff, son of
Rev. and Mrs, W. T. Cliff, received of-
ficial notification of bis appointment as
Lieutenant. to be attached to D Com-
pany of the 7tst Battalion, which is to
Winter at Woodstock. Lieut. Cluff re-
ported Saturday at London, Lieut.
Cluff was successful in his officer's
exams., following a six.weeks' coarse at
the Officers' Training School at London,

The Octario Railway Board returned

Police Magistrate to publish the names

The monthly meeting of the Wo-
men's Institute and Red Cross Circle
convened here last Thursday after-
noon with a fairly good attendance.
Topio, "Cheerfulness" was introduced
by Miss Flossie Scott. A bale of
clothing for the Red Cross will be
packed on Nov. 11th. All unfinished
articles are asked to be returned by
that date.
JOSEPH SMILLIE DEPARTS 'THIS
LIFE. -One of the pioneer settlers of
the 1st line of Morris township, pass-
ed to his reward Wednesday morning
of this week, in the person of Joseph
Stnillie, He was in bis 82nd year and
is survived by his wife, 4 sons, (Rob-
ert and Stewart, Of Nelson, B. 0. and
Walter and William ab home)
and daughter (Miss Mary .at home.)
Cause of death was a trouble in the
throat, for which an operation was
l�erformed. He was 111 8 weeks.
Funeral takes place Friday afternoon
to 'Motivate cemetery. Mr. Smillie
was a fine man, who was esteemed by
a wide circle of friends. Be was a
member of the Presbyterian church
and a Liberal in politics. The family
share in the sympathy of the com-
munity.
