INTERESTING LETTER FROM NEW -BRUNSWICK DEAR MR. KERR.- I thought this morning I would hurriedly scribble off a line to you as I know you al- ways have, or rather make time, to keep in touch with any of your ex S. S. pupils. I have been spending a most de- lightful two months here with my friends -the Millers- coming down from Toronto' via the St. Lawrence, stopping over at Montreal and at the grand Chateau Frontenac at Quebec cm my way. Found both cities in- tensely Interesting, especially 'Quebec ab thio crisis in the 'hietot'y of our Empire. We did not visit 'Valcartier as it hales 9 miles out from the city and at thattimethere were not many of our soldier's there. Mrs. Miller has au excellent big Cadillac car which she drives beauti- fully and she has taught me to run 1 t so it affords us as splendid opportunity of seeing the country. Shediac is just a small place of some 1500 in- habitants, mostly French of the poorer class and yet there are a num- ber of English and Canadians here whom I have found most hospitable and charming. The farmers seem to know little of cultivation but do grow excellent potatoes. Prince Edward Island exports the finest to be found, Just to give you an idea of the quantities the other morning I went out for a spin with Dr. Qulton as he was making his calls and in 14 miles we passed 400 wagon loads of barrels of potatoes. They cart everything here in barrels instead of sacks. The apple orop seems also to be plentiful but they have not the delicious flavor of our apples. The orchards are poorly kept and the farms on the whole look so delapidat- ed. But this is a great country for lobsters and game and the finest oysters of the world are to be found at P. E. I. It is fun to watch them rake in the oysters and they taste very superior to what they do when we get them in the Western pal ts. Should one order a quart of oysters here they would be sent always in the shell and it is quite an art to open thein. The lobsters are fierce looking big things and they are cooked alive, when they have the nicest flavor. They are caught in oyster cages, The game here is very fine, quail, partridge, deer in abundance, bear, wild goose and duck. In connection with the work over at Carlton Point Mr. Miller has a very powerful search light and the wild geese, at this season, fly directly across the straits to it and the men sit up on the tower over there at night and shoot them by the 'dozen. We are to have moose steak for dinner today and very often have venison, The other morning I saw a magnificent sight. Dr. Qulton had asked me to go out in the country some 17 miles to assist him with a critical surgical case and it was just breaking day as we were return- ing through a lovely woods. About 15 yards right in front of us there stood a magnificent big moose look- ingllinto the lights of the machine. As we had no shotgun we stood still and waited to see iit would charge but- after 10 minutes of deliberate thinking he decided to bound off into the forest. It was an anxious few moments for us as you know if they do show fight they could soon tear up an automobile. Dr. Qulton said his horns would have measured 12 feet from tip to tip. Almost every day since my arrival we have motored to Brute, a Summer resort on the straits of Northumberland and have gone in bathing and enjoyed learning to swim, dive, float, in the &c., brine. 0 it is great sport. Weather here is cooler than at home but I always did favor cold "dips" and it has ap- parently been a tonic to me as I have chased the scales up another 10 notches, One day two other girls and myself went across to St. John and enjoyed seeing the sights. Before I leave one of'the captains has invited me to go across on his boat -"The Empress" - to Summerside and Charlottown P. E. I. Itis very primitive over there, controlled by farmers and they have a law that prohibits motorists to be on the street any day but Wednesdays and Saturdays and then only to run at the rate of 10 miles per hour. I hope Mr. Kerr that you will par- don this scribble as I have written this in thirty-five minutes arid want to catch this mail as there i only one a day going West. e n y I expect to visit Valoal'tier on my return home which will be in the course of a couple of weeks. ° With very kindest regards for your- self' and Mrs. Kerr. 1 remain, JULIA E. SHARPE. Shediac, N. B., Oct. B, 1914, Maitland Presbytery The regular meeting of the Presby- tery of Maitland was held in the Angli- can church, Wingham, on Thursday, October 1st, as repairs were being car- ried on in $t. Andrew's church. Theprincipal work of the Pre sb ter Y was the discussion of the Budget for p sem The apportionment of Maitland Presbytery for this year is $26,000. This amount was apportioned among the various con re atlons. Rev. Dr, Berridge, Moderator' of the General Assembl and Dr. A S.. Grant,'chair- y mem of the Finance hoard were present and delivered addresses. Rev, Chas, M. Rutherford was elect- ed Moderator for the ensuing six months. There was a large attendance at the morning and afternoon rneotings. Ir the evening Rev. Dr, Herrid e and Dr. Grant gave addresses, Rev. Dr, Berridge said iu part that we must allow that while we are ready to sacri- flee for home, country and emiplre, qac should' make"still greater sacrifice' for the advancement of God's Kingdom. People had enjoyed privileges so long. that they had ceased to appreciate them. Whop cumin to Win ham he wonder. ed bow the 0am0 of the town was pro- noenoed, whether the accent was pieced on "Wing" or "ham" but was glad to learn that the emphasis was on 'Wing" from this laid emphasis on the spiritual as agalust the material, The Rev. Dr, made a timely plea for better salaries for the ministers. Practical men are needed and the most practical are those who see visions and dream dreams. A Christian can be told by service better than by attendance or collections. There were sad hearts to be cheered and prac- tical work to be done among those who had wandered and those whom the scant charity of the world had put aside. The creed of the world seems to be "Every man for himself and the devil for the hindermost." The privilege of giving was emphasized, -the map who keeps is poor and the man who gives is rick. The state of lethargy in many churches waa illustrated by a story 0f an old colored lady, who went into a fashionable New York church and be- gan clapping her hands and saying Praise de Lord." A web groomed official told her she must keep quiet to which she replied"I have got salvation" but the official said it was not the fault of his church as she never got it there. Building on this he made an eloquent appeal for more enthusiasm, more divine intoxication. This was; the Sick Headaches-- are not caused by anything wrong in the head, but by constipation, bilious- ness and indigestion. Headache powders or tablets may deaden, but cannot cure them.
